  1. I could be wrong here, but to run a trial over 8 sections 2 laps requires a fair amount of time to get round (riders). To put a trial in Tartydays - you would lose the best part of a day to the competition meaning other riders couldn't use the materials / obstacles, probably one reason why those don't run in conjunction. Sheffield event would be good - but i reckon wasn't a 2 minute task to get together. I know Tyke ran a demo in York for 3/4 riders before. I think an actual competition is always good too - people who may want to get into the sport would certainly see the "skill level" involved to ride. (ie white not being too challenging for a capable bike rider)
  2. Totally agree with the latter. It's a sport that needs more coverage, but with that you need there to be more competitions too - which are more accessible - and also you need them to be exciting. Most riders put on a good show, but some do tar the sport with very drab boring rides - do you want to be standing in a field in the back end of nowhere watching someone bash and drag their bike around a few rocks ... perhaps whilst getting wet... or.... Change that to a city centre car park - how many more people will a) be passing and stop to watch - take time out their calendar to plan to go into the town and watch it (then grab a coffee or go shopping whilst there). Demos are good - but competitions, especially a British national should be more entertaining, all variations of levels and riders. I did speak to a chap at our trial the other week who took his son to Blackpool for the national, and bought him his first bike to ride the week before, he didn't enter the national, but was amazed at what he called lack of spectators for a national trial. Perhaps more promotional work involved in the areas prior to the trial - but again its money and you need the riders to re-coup that money. I see a lot of really good riders hardly ever attend comps however - with most being perhaps busy or just not bothering. If there was incentive there to ride them, perhaps coverage or more money, you would get bigger entries?
  3. I understand all that - so in essence Blackpool should not have been used if it is so "dab friendly". You won't eradicate people trying to get round parts using the current format and locations such as Blackpool will just enable them to do such. I did see a post from JC (not friends with Matt A) about trials being a trying sport, don't just dab things if you can't do them. Would you see our younger riders, TOP younger riders, cleaning 90% of a expert section, but a strat-dab if they can't make it up the 5ft rock? Yes, using it excessive times in a section IS wrong, but dropping a younger rider from say expert to Inter, to basically allow them round on clean is just hindering their progress right? Things to look at IMO would be taking feet off both pedals - if one is off- the other can't come off. Eradicates a few slidy feet up the frame dabbers/ standing on the wheel dabbers & also dabbing through a "gate" would be classed as a 5 - something like that would help. Yes, aka openfree trials...lol, to be honest i read about this years ago but completely forgot it still existed. It created a lot of discussion and debate, almost as much as the no-stop rule did/does now within the moto-trials community. I don't think anyone in the UK got one to become successful did they? - it still is in America too i think. It will be good to have a new format, whether it takes off, or can run successfully with the system for observers especially when Tartys aren't involved will remain to be seen, but anything to help the sport is a big thumbs up from me.
  4. Saves messing on with the joining club problem having trials run under ACU causes also! I would say a step forward to making things easier if using the ACU for Biketrials!
  5. NBC will be hosting round 2 on the 20th July. Location of the trial will be Cogden Hall - DL11 6HT Please head on over to www.northernbiketrials.co.uk for more info. If you want a copy of the entry form i have attached it - also if you want one posting out - please drop us a facebook message at : www.facebook.com/northernbiketrials 3 Routes again, Primary, Novice, Inter. Hope to see a few of you there! Any other questions, just ask. Cheers Entry Form Round 2.pdf
  6. I guess it totally depends what mindset you are in and what you want to do / where you want to go with trials. We just set up a club up north for Primary/Novice/Inter - and from everyone's reactions on the day - they loved it. It was fully natural, a bit of tape here and there, nothing spectacular, but put on for the youth who may want to progress, and who may end up being the next JC - perhaps then bringing more coverage into the sport. Trials itself is an absolute minefield - every little part of trials can usually end up in an argument with two or more differing opinions. One huge problem which Tartys type trials overcome is the obstacles - "tactical dabbing" isn't right - but if a rider can get through 6/7 sections, and just cannot get up a huge rock, a tactical dab or a 5? Its a no-brainer if its a "competition" surely - yes when practicing give it a go - but in a comp you are technically there to do your best. What is worrying is the amount per section - one, fair enough, one per section again is pushing it, but 2/3/4 isn't right - drop down! Without naming names - at a local event i saw one guy sidehop to dab - as it was clear he wouldn't of made it - is that deliberate? What difference is that to standing on the back tyre and hauling it up except eye-candy? Not one person or one club will get everything right all the time - not one rider will be able to clean everything. Not one type of event or style of event will be right - each rider will have their own preferences. I just hate seeing criticism and remarks from people who offer no way of helping or remedying said situations. ( I know tape has been mooted, but it can't be used everywhere - not when 5 courses all run in one area!) Which motorbike trials clubs use this style that Tartys are holding Mark? I have rode for many years but not come across this? How are classes based? Age surely wouldn't work for Biketrials, nor would self-entry, or wheel size, was it engine size?
  7. Just aim for as many gates as you can! Not many people "clean" sections, but the further you get, the more you score! Unless you have a trouser caught in the chain-ring fail i am sure you will be fine, aim for whites, or even easy green gates!
  8. Yeah, i guess so - it is very tricky however, i mean where then would you take marks? Putting rocks to suit one foot then the other just promotes bettering yourself? What doesn't promote it is standing on your tyre with one foot, hooking one under the bars and pulling the bike up, one foot on the rock, the other waving about in the air or on the toptube. Its just one guy make a nice big move and cleans it, another almost uses the bike as a ladder and comes away with a 1...something amiss! But anyway, this trial eliminates all this and looks set to be good! Will there be a rider limit? As sometimes queuing if it isn't great weather won't be too enjoyable, riders and observers!
  9. I just see it as the more the public have trials knowledge, or more enjoyable to watch, the more likely it is to grow - the more likely other sponsors would get involved, more money into the sport etc. Plus to me this trial setup will eliminate strato or technical dabbing, and that by far is the worst part within a competition.
  10. Its a great idea, and the multi format of gates will work a treat. I have been present in this situation in motor trials, where when the kids easy sections were set, we ran the points system backwards. (we used the 5 point, getting to the end was 5, second last gate 4 etc etc ) and kids especially liked the idea of "getting" points, rather than avoiding them... Brilliant idea to get this going and i hope it brings in more ideas to future competitions. I think competitions are integral to any sport, i can't think of any sports which are big, and only ever done for fun! One thing i did see however, allowing gates to be "crossed" presents just a little scenario : 1) White, Green and Blue gates will be run to BIU rules (a pedal touching the floor is ok), Red and Yellow will be UCI rules (only the tyres can touch the floor). If "Jim" went from a blue gate, intending for the red, but put his bash / pedal etc down, so turned to hit a white/green/blue instead, so in effect should have been classed as out. What this sport needs in competitions is free flowing and easy on the eye. Something this sounds like it has all over! I look forward to entering!
  11. I know Ben Swales, the Shepherds and the Moorewoods have been involved - maybe worth giving them a shout too Ross. I didn't think about the space to be honest - but your right, 60 riders is a lot, the venue page has a picture - ill send you it over on facebook.
  12. It was many moons ago i rode a TY, so i wouldn't like to say - however try Trials Central, they are more Motorbike Trials orientated there! http://www.trialscentral.com/forums/forum/51-uk-forums/ Hope this helps, Paul
