The Design Thread

I work for a London communications agency, we employ almost 50 people in 3 offices, London, Cardiff and Worthing. We have 5 designers in London and 1 in Cardiff, my job involves liaising with them almost on a daily basis, making sure the sites i develop from their designs are to their satisfaction, working with them up in the London office to make sure it's again, as they want.

I'm also allowed to look through CV's of applicants and discuss who to call in for an interview, given, not for design but i often read the applications for design anyway just to see who i might be working with in future. I then of course get to see who was picked from those applications.

That extent enough to justify my "BS posts"?

Firstly Simon is one of the most competitant coders i've come accross, trials-shack and various other ecomerce solutions all w3c compliant etc is a big enough tick in my books...

as for this

Haha im waiting to see how long it takes Charlie to make a pdf to mimic that cheese packet and how he f**ks it up

That CD on body print i posted earlier along with the booklet and inlay designs etc were sent to the duplicators today for our young enterprise company (www.myspace.com/amplocal). If all goes to plan those CDs should be in Watford HMV soon :o

Does anyone in this thread read design magazines or similair stuff? What do you read? I love reading magazines and wanna expand my range. At the minute i mainly read bmx, photography, art and lifestyle stuff.

Im subscribed to ICON which also comes with a free subscription to grand designs magazine as its a sister magazine... ICON is ususally pretty good but i dont usually bother looking at GD as its crap.

I used to buy computerarts but it was a bit too "geeky" side of design and other than the pretty pictures I wasnt interested. Covered too much of a wide area.

When I can get it, I read ID magazine. Haven't had that for ages either :(

But now days I just generally buy books, Recently brought 'the Universal Prinicpals of Design'. Awsome book, Highly recomended.

jobs done by those who can't are better than jobs done for those who haven't the time.

Yer that seems to be my problem with a fair few mags in that kinda category. They all seem to focus on architecture and interior alot and although i appreciate that i'm not into it enough to buy a magazine on it. I haven't read an Icon yet, cheers i'll pick it up next time i'm in borders :)

At the minute i choose a random new design/art/photography magazine in their every week haha.

Someone please ban or warn this guy!

Simon is an amazing web developer that is great at coding.

Also a very helpful guy on this forum that helps amatures get their websites looking better and also coding them better which is alot more than you have done.

I'd say Grafik, Wallpaper, and the more "high end" design magazines. Stay away from Computer Arts and things like that, althought they might seem nice, and sometimes do the odd decent article, Grafik is so much nicer.

And it's set in Avant Garde, mmm.

Grafik is very useful and like Jon said has some great stuff in it.

I have Web Designer magazine but like Jon said Grafik is a better quality.

I only have web designer because my mums credit card or somthing offered her 6 months free subscription to it during this time the company went bankrupt and taken over by a new company.

Which meant some were it was lost that we only had 6 months free i now how well other 2 years worth of free magazines i would say. and it some times has some nice show case portfolios for inspiration.

Seeing as someone mentioned architecture, I thought id post some amazing stuff just to get you thinking...

Im big-time into architecture find myself using it for inspiration for smaller projects, I'd love to have been an architect and if I actually get to a point where I could support myself financially for another 7 years would happily train for it...

I really like my brutalist architecture, sometimes modernist.. King of this is Tadao Ando:

Just a tease... Soooooo many more amazing projects! lol.

Also, of course zaha hadid, my favourite is in cincinati..

Theres another cool building i found, Links graphic design and architecture completly... Need to remember the site so i can hotlink :) if not i'll upload my saved piccies.

Anyone got any good design blog kinda websites, www.mocoloco.com is the only one i'd recomend to people.

(ps I havent written much about any of the architects/buildings as i assume people dont wanna read... also just finished a 7000 word essay on tadao ando and previously did one on hadid.. lol :))

Yer that stuff is amazing Bren :o Like i say i'm interested in it and would love to read an article about it or two in design magazines. But i'm just not involved enough in it to read a magazine with the majority of content being architecture.

As for blogs, i've got alot that are on design/art//architecture/photography etc, heres a few just copied off bloglines:

http://intelligence.arkitip.com/

http://www.itsnicethat.com/

http://www.mumblemagazine.com/

http://swindlemagazine.com/

http://mediastorm.org/blog/

http://2modern.blogs.com/

http://www.designobserver.com/

http://www.designers-who-blog.com/

http://blog.defgrip.net/

Not all of them may be that good but it's just stuff i've accumulated over time :)

I must agree, Tis very eye catching and good design, Theres just nothing about any of those that make me...... jaw dropped. Still not got the wow factor for me, Would happily keep turning the pages if I saw them in an architecture book.

I appreciate thats not the case for everyone, But i will endevour to find some more examples!

Bauhaus_Chemnitz_hb.JPG

There pretty cool design. It is originated in germany (like most good things [apart from the nazi])

Jon. 1. I'm not legally allowed to post a PDF. 2. I'm not at LazerType (company) anymore.

Also: I'm currently re-working the graphic's on my site: www.onemotion.co.uk and using flash (as we have a new colleague) [Jacob]

Are they the ones that are built in massive peices in a factory and then erected on site or is that some other German housing system. Im sure i saw a bauhaus house on grand designs. I may be wrong.

just to clear. there is no 'his' work

Bauhaus is a design movement in germany. design school early 1900's..didn't last long. 14 years or so.

so yeah, many designers belonged to bauhaus. there are even pictures of hitler sitting on their chairs. he then later stopped Bauhaus because of the irrational ethics of the eccentric students.
