hi people in my computer. i won an echo rear rim brake for £6. but i have no mounts. can i use magura mounts? will i need off set mounts? it's an adamant frame and x517 rim. also, any pics of how to mount the 4 bolt mounts? the adamant frame has no threads in the seat stays...is this normal? if so, i presume i need long enough bolts to go through the stay with a nut on the bottom....seems a bit strange!!! any help appreciated as my build only needs a rear brake to get to a usable state!! :w00t:

that's the one. seems to be ok but o can't investigate the leak until i can apply pressure.....holding the slaves in with my hands doesn't cut it....i'm no gorilla!!! :wink2:

i have 5 or 6 other levers with similar diameters, so should be able to knock something up...i have a mag hs front with tektro lever....works ok!

Does the frame have any rim brake mounts at all? Or just mounts which somehow aren't threaded? I'm a bit confused as to what you're getting at.

i tapped the 2 lower holes to accept v brake mounts....well nearly...the tap snapped and was about 2mm below the surface!! googled how to remove steel taps from aluminium. this left me with 2 choices...spark eroding or using alum (potash) to dissolve the steel, which requires the frame to be boiled in a solution for 3-4 hours......both totally impractical on a £30 frame!

so...if the frame is scrap....i've nothing to loose :nerd: .....so i cleaned up nails and welded them to the top of the snapped off tap.....thinking the weld doesn't stick to the alloy. and the heat from the weld will cause the frame to expand more than the tap.

each welded nail undid about half a turn before snapping.......but it was working :)

so i just got in from 2 hours welding in my unit........with a frame with no tap in it!!! B)

and managed to finish off the thread with the other half of the tap :D

but need another tap for the other side :S

Buy a helicoil kit they're cheap enough. All you'll need to do is drill the hole out a little bit to fit them. As for offset mounts you'll only need them if you've got a narrow rim. If you've got a trials rim you should be fine but if you're not sure put some pictures up.

its already two sizes up as someone drilled the original threads....and then i've tapped it again...........and 517 is a narrow rim, cheers.........offsets it is then :)

You might be able to use bigger bolts, normal brake bolts are m5. The helicoil will reduce the size of the hole so you might just need an m6 helicoil to sort it. The offset mounts can be used to make the mount spacing wider or narrower depending on which way you run them so that should work.

Thought you were tapping it for v's ?

If the hole is too big you'll have problems with maggy mounts. I'd go m6 topps, anything bigger and when you've finished drilling out the clamps to take the bolt they'll only have thin side walls left, I doubt that'll be strong enough to hold a slave.

if its too big for a helicoil/timesert try putting a (what ever the new thread is) bolt in, cutting it flush with the mount and tapping that m5. Never tried but it can't not work :)

*How long would spark eroding take! Haha

The reason for tapping for v mounts is I have an old magura hs11 with v mounts and booster...the q r type. Using this and getting your white forks gives me hydro rim brakes all round. ....and still putting v's on it when it gets demoted to 2nd frame!!!! (When I get a replacement...obviously)

There is a lot more metal round the boss than my san andreas has!!!!!

Ok, confused why you want offset mounts then, is that for the front?

yeah.....and to use on my next frame. the vee mount is just an idea i had last night...using what parts i have. but thinking about it, the bolts through the frame method will be alot stronger as twice as many bolts = half the load on each bolt (A)
