Zap Tap question

Just one of them things where you need to start small and build your way up. I sometimes go past a small fence I used to try and half pedal "back in the day" and really struggled with and it's not even knee height!

Remember it's not just the kick that's giving you the lift to get onto the object, when you lift the front wheel with your bad foot you should be leaning back and preloading ready to jump up with the kick. I find the technique for this is best learnt doing bunnyhops to rear on things then when you haven't got the room to get a decent runup you use a half pedal to achieve the same power and speed you need. If you get me??!!

Yes thanks I see what you're saying.What is the best sequence of learning ,is it b/hop side/hop pedalup ?

I'd say work on them all equally, don't push yourself too hard on one particular move or you'll just get frustrated. Mix it up to keep busy, you may find you excel at one more than the others or struggle on one particular thing. Like me, I'm awful at pedal ups but can go pretty high bunnyhopping up stuff and I'm pretty average at sidehopping. On a good day I can get bar height every attempt and then others I bottle it and put my foot down!

Would you be so kind as to look at one of my pedal ups? I get up slightly higher now (maybe 10cm) but have reached a point where I don't see any improvement anymore and I am sure that it has to do with my technique rather than my strength. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong at the moment.

Doesn't look like you're putting much into the jump other than the kick though that could be because the wall is quite small. I find if you struggle to get up bigger obstacles it helps to go a bit quicker, a vid of you attempting something you struggle with would be a betteridea for some feedback then we could see what you could try to work on.

As soon as I switched from a street trials bike (with which I learned pretty much all the basics) to a pogo stick, I forgot about the bunny hop and haven't done it since.

Unfortunately, I don't have a vid of myself struggling with some height but will record it the next time I ride.

It's hard to tell on something smallish that you don't struggle on at all, it may be a case of needing a bit more speed or a bit more spring from your legs when you jump. I've just had a look and I've got no vids of me trying to half pedal anything, only got bits of me bunnyhopping to rear but from a few years ago so don't know if they'd help.

With any luck I might manage to ride my bike before the year's out and get some clips myself!

Would you say that practicing to half pedal sth. (is this with only half a crank turn?) helps to get up higher when having a full crank turn to work with?

What do you mean by having a full crank turn to work with?

Well. I find it easier to start with my strong foot up front, performing half a crank turn to speed up, then lifting the front up with my weak foot and then do the pedal kick with my strong foot. Many just leave out the first half of the crank turn and start immediately with lifting up the front with the weak foot, thus performing the pedal up with only half a crank turn.

The tap adds a surprising amount of bounce to stuff, I've overshot more than a few times when I've tapped it by mistake!

That's how I found out how to do it. I think that I don't pull enough on the handlebars when doing the pedal up because when tapping it just pushes my arms up and I have my arse closer to the rear tyre than when doing a pedal up.

I would say the the actual pedal kick down, to me anyway, is just to lift the front wheel in an instant and as a stamp downwards for my whole body to jump upwards. Then the rest is up to your arms pulling up and tucking your ass back above your front wheel like a normal bunny hop. I used to be able to pedal up ~40inch range on my mod, anything higher I would tap my front wheel for that little extra height. Couldn't bunny hop as high though.

But remember when you tap the front wheel don't hold onto the front brake!

So what you're saying is that the actual height is more defined by the pulling up with your arms and tucking your knees up?
