Matt P Posted August 30, 2015 Report Share Posted August 30, 2015 Hey..., Ok, so a year ago I bought my first trials specific bike. With almost no budget I bought a 'like new' Phase 1.2. I realise by todays standards its not the greatest, but after some advice from here, immediately replaced the chain and converted to single speed, and now have a fun ride. Only thing is the mech hanger has been squished - I'm assuming due to stresses from hopping with the Gusset tensioner holding things tight. Hindsight tells me that a sprung tensioner may have been better, but that's too late now Please can anyone suggest where I can get a new hanger from (preferably one not made of cheese - like the original was), or, as there's loads on ebay, how to measure or make sure I get the right one. Also, had a frenzy yesterday and water bled the maggies, and took the grinder to my rear wheel for the first time. Nice results... But as I cant afford new wheels, using the ones I have - with QR skewers. Upon the advice of a friend, I'm thinking of tapping the skewers and bolting. Anyone done this before? Did it work well? Tapping out the hubs on a phase works just fine. Use an M6 tap to a depth of 30mm or so, this also just happens to be the depth where the shank of my dormer tap tapers outwards and won't go anymore. I do it to every wheel i get with that style of externally threaded hollow axle. I even did it when using skewers on my then commuter - just in case some smart arse pr1ck at college faffed with my bike, which eventually did happen, and i had to ride (Very carefully) 2 miles without a rear skewer so I could rig up a bolt and washer affair & make the rest of my way home, but without that thread in there i'd have been screwed. On the other question, thought about buying/making up something like a heatsink tensioner? Can be done quite easily using some scrap material (baked bin can etc., cut and drilled mechano style) and a metal engineers ruler for the spring and the surface that rubs against the chain, all bolted together using whats laying about. It would nearly eliminate the hanger all together, you'd just use it to do up your hub bolt into and the rest of it underneath can be done away with. Looks really tidy as well. The heatsink idea would be great, but from what I can tell, they're like rocking horse poop!?? I hadn't thought of fabricating my own... might be a good plan. Alternatively, if you've still got the original hanger you could always have a look here and use the pictures or their "Hanger Finder" to work out which one matches it?
