2005 Photo Comp

So who's interested in entering a photo comp in the same vein as the video comps of years gone by?

If there's enough interest, then I can try and sort out some prizes (though don't count on it). Perhaps do a couple of categories too. One for action shots, and one for non-action.

Who's in?

EDIT:

Entry rules are propsed as follows, please discuss:

There will be two categories; action and non-action.

Action will be as it says. This is for the shots of riders going for moves. Images should have a punch, and an impact to them, demonstrating in a single photograph how great trials riding can be.

Non-action is for anything else. Pictures that show non-riding aspects of trials, from still life of a bashring, the people of trials, or the damage which ensues.

Editing is free, anything goes.

There will be a maximum pixel dimension for the longest edge of the picture of 1024 pixels.

Images must be of a suitable quality. That doesn't mean super-high pixel cameras and pro lenses, just that it musn't be rubbish. For the web, a 2 megapixel camera phone may just squeek in, but video captures are right out. Given the potential high quality of entries, this must be considered.

Judging will be by poll as per video competitions of old. Users should consider quality of the image (including the technical 'correctness' of the exposure, etc..), the composition, and the impact of the image. The shot can be of a big or small move (for the action category) but big riding tends to have more impact.

There will be a second award based on votes via PM to me for 'competitors choice' which will be the best action, and best non-action shots as voted for by the other people who enter the competition. Details will be sent around to those who enter after the closing date.

Images can be from any time, not ones captured specifically for this competition.

Oh, and you have to have taken the image you submit.

Entries sent to me by 01/01/06, where I will put up a series of topics with a poll in each. Winner goes through. Details with each image must include a name for the image and your real and TF name. Any extra details will be posted alongside the image.

Sounds good, although I think a rule should be that you can only qualify for a photo you actually took (obviously).

Also, it would be good to have two threads, one for comments, and another for just the photos. So if you enter, you add your entry JUST ONCE to the photos thread. Problems arise when people start arguing and messing about and quoting large images countless times and the entries will get fragmented and there'll be 8 pages of rubbish to sift through to compare photos. OR somebody could add them to a TF gallery, OR someone could set up a webpage for the photos to be uploaded to?

If this happens we should have a no editing rule, crop and perhaps borders are ok but we can't be having shit photos with a ton of filters wacked over the top, or de saturated etc. (if you want a b&w photo, take it in b&w).

also, the photos should be taken with an actual camera, rather than people entering a video still or something. Annnnnnd, it should be judged on photo skills, not size of the move etc, although obviously a better move will usually mean a better photo.

Yes I most definatley up for that!!!!!!!

Whos going to be a judge? You Chris? But then if you enter a photo obviously you cant be biased towards your own photo. We could ideally do with a judge thats not going to enter.

It's like having a surfing competition with the judges entering.

Also yes I think PS work should be limited to cropping, levels adjustment and de-saturation. It's a pretty stupid idea taking a photo in B+W, it's always best if you have the colour version as well.

So then yeh, we also need to organise some sort of time limit, like a space of say ummm 6 weeks maybe? or more or less

Also a start date. I think 6 weeks maybe about right so then people can get some good ideas, good places and a variation of choice. Also im sure most of us are very busy with work/college work/girlfriends/riding etc so another good reason for 6 weeks or so.

Good or bad idea?

;) Rob :P
