Joe there is no way you can do 30 reps of 50/60kg.

Ive been going to the gym for 2 months now and I can only press 37.5 consistantly, ie do 3 sets of 10 and that is a push sometimes.

I advise you stay away from the machines as most of them are crap and represent an inaccurate meassuremnt of the weight you are lifting.

I was using the bench press machine that you sit upright on and push your arms away and infront from your body. I was doing 67kg and there is no way that accurate becasue Id be able to do it lying doing bench pressing.

Stick to free weights.

i think that its better to do lots of lighter weight reps when ur young, to build muscle. then maybe do heavier weights once you have the muscle there to build on? just a thought.

also i dont bother with weights to be honest, just do sports that use these mucsle groups -----> climbing, trials biking, etc...

that way your ability in the sports improves and you dont waste time indoors training :(

Perfectly true but for me the gym was about bulking up in general and stregthening all my muscles to prevent injuries.

So far Im achieving what I want Ive put on half a stone in 2 months going from 9.5 to 10 stone. My upper body is a ot beefier and my muscles more defined. My leags are fine football and riding builds those up just nicely.

I still need to work more of abs.

lol, my arms would just get tired!

yeah, joe, there is NO way you can do 50-60 KG unless its the one where you sit on it and push the bars out in front of you, i can do 80 on that and thats pushing it, but id love to see myself do 80 on the actual bench...

Thats what Im on about. Those machines are inaccurate as they rely on lots of pulleys creating leverage ratios.

Setting 10 is 67kg and in reality its more like 40kg possibly less.

As I said freweights you know what your lifting.

Id love to bench 80kg on the bench but my goal is 50kg3 sets of 10 within the next 3months.

0kg is seriously heavy, mymate is 6 foot plus built like a shit brick house and he struggles with 80kg.

can bulk out in sports :( but i guess that just concentrates on particular part of the body, meh

Do you know which machines to go on for abs?

If not, obviously, do sit ups and stuff, but also, if your gym is as good as mine :- then you should have some of these leathery things that you hang off the chin up bars, you hand your arms through them and lift legs out sraight in front of you.

And to split your 6 pack up, there should be these slanted benches with like a plate thing on the bottom to put your feet on and bend your top part of the body to the left 20 times the vice versa, and then that splits them up ^_^

For some reason, on my left abs, i only have 2 abs and on the right i have 3 :( :- haha im weird!

Eating correctly is also crucila without that no matter how much you do you will jsut toneyourmuscles not increase their size.

I ve been neglecting my eating lately I shall get backinto it.

I don't do weights, but in a gym, on one of them sit down quad weighty flexy thing, I can lift 83kg, which isn't bad for someone who doesn't like weights. :(

I prefere chin ups/push ups/sit ups/etc, I find working muscle groups more effective than singular muscles. Soon as I can afford gym membership I'm going to join, I really want to do more CV work. :-

in reality, you should only start to go when you turn 16 cause then thats when your muscles are ready to take abuse.

But if you start going now, do lighter weights just to build a little bit of musle and build up.

Dont expect to be benshing 65KG as soon as you get there like lol

Rowing macines are were its at, total CV work out and possible to bud a bit of mucles maybe more a toning thing.

For chin ups try putting a weight between your legs, dont over do it 5 kg at first is plenty, you will notics the difference.

That is the machine I mean :( We have this multimachine type thing at my school and its just loads of different versions of the same thing. One lying downpushing upwards, one sitting down pushing upwards from behing your neck and one sitting down pushing away from you. On the lying down one I can do 60 5 times and on the sitting up one i can do it 30 times.

I prefer to do lighter wieghts more to gain more stamina and get the build of a professional basketball player than do the heavier wieghts less times and end up looking like arnold swartzenegger(sp?)

Where refering to the topic that got closed.

As I said that machine is crap dont use it unless you set the weight to someting like 80kg rember itsmore like 40kg with all the leverage and ratios.

I reckon 16 is a good age to start but do ight weights and dont over do it as your body is still developing and over doing it will most likely damage your growth. By 18 you should be ready to up the anti.

My gym is £40 a month but I have unlimited access day and night, I just go 3 times a week and it pays for its self.

You can get student membership which is stupidly cheap but you have to prove your age.

I started when i was 14 at my school gym.

It's best to start when your 14 becaus eon average thats when you body starts making testosterone, If you aren't making testosterone it is physically impossible to produce muscle without using steroids and you would just end up injuring yourselves, most gyms won't accept anyone under 16 (I think) due to legal reasons but if you're lucky your school might have one.

Speak to your P.E teacher and see what he says :-

Get one of those giant ball things, not sure therename but they are very good apparently.

Also holdinga sit up or chin up n the stress position will also build muscle. I dont do chin ups any more I jsut go up do my ares are bent and holdit foraslong as possible then repeat.

£40 a months is ALOT lol

I go 5 times a week, saturday and wednesdays are break days.

If i wasnt paying a membership, it would be £2.50 each time i go, work it out how much i would be paying, its a massive diffrence like!

the one where you sit up straight and push the bar upwards is for yourshoulders. i doubt you can do 60kg with your shoulders 30 times :( i can only do 25KG JUST 10 times! lol

Its a posh gym, only one around here.

Im over 21as well so they think I can afford more when I cant.

5 times a week is over the top isnt it unless your doing one muscle gruop a day.

ah right :-

Does it feel "not too heavy" ? if it does, its defo not 60Kg haha

5 times a week is over the top isnt it unless your doing one muscle gruop a day.

Monday - Arms and chest

Tuesday - shoulders and back

Wednesday - break

Thursday - Legs

Friday - abs and lower back

Saturday - fitness and abs.

in the meantime is there anything i can do other than situps to do my abs, they hurt my back

Try putting your back on the floor, and your calfe part of your legs (below your knee) ontop of your bed or a seat of summit, then get someone to hold your legs onto the seat/bed and then try it. doing sit ups, your not meant to go right down and right up, try to go just far enough up so that your muscles contrapt, then done so they still slightly contracted :-

Or steroids B)

Oh yeah, and you cant just work on one part of your body to build, like you cant just work on your abs and build them into a 6pack, you have to build the rest of your muscles unless they wont get any bigger ^_^
