Backhop

To learn to backhop, ride along slowly, pull a small endo, locking both brakes, and when the back wheel comes down pull the front end up. You are aiming to bring the bike up to the balance sweet spot over the back wheel, which is a similar position to when you are wheelie-ing standing up. From here, bend your legs a little, and then jump up, lifting the bike off the floor. Try not to exaggerate this too much, you barely want to leave the ground. Practice is perfect for the backhop. It will take you a while to get used to the balance point over the back wheel. As you are learning, you may find that you are jumping backwards, or to the left or right. This is because you're exaggerating the hopping motion. Sometimes it helps to do a small pedal-kick to move the bike forwards.

When you have improved at the backhop, try to learn to do it on the spot, without going forwards or backwards. Some riders are able to do away with backhops almost entirely, simply bouncing on their rear tyre.

Backhopping is generally seen as a prerequisite to the pedal-kick.
