This is the piece of hardware that attaches the cranks to the frame. It contains 2 or more normally sealed bearings on which the axle runs on. there are 3 main types or crank interface available on the market: octalink ( shimano's 8 spline system ) isis ( international 9 spline system ) and square taper ( the oldest here but still favoured by some riders )
