Magura is a company who manufacture bicycle and motorcycle brakes. In the world of bike trials, the term Maguras usually refers specifically to Magura HS33 rim brakes.

Maguras are a hydraulic based rim-brake. they rely on a hydraulic fluid instead of a cable to actuate the brake, and as such have theoretically more power than their cable counterparts. Maguras were originally aimed at xc, touring and tandem riders due to their low maintenance, high power and good allw eather perfromance. maguras were originally used my triasl riders because of their excellent modulation. However now adays a a magura is known for its bite and hold

[edit] Models

There are several magura rim ( hydrostop series ) brakes: the HS33 , HS22 , HS66Magura HS11|HS11]]. The HS11 is essentially the same as the hs33, but has a different lever. The lever has a larger 16mm piston and longer lever blade, composite ( plastic ) lever body and aluminium lever blade and no tpa. The hs22 is the predesscor to the hs33 and now discontinued, It is a long bladed, 16mm piston model, no tpa and an aluminium lever blade and body. The hs33 uses a 12mm piston with a shorter blade than any of the other hs brakes. There have been tweo incarnations of the hs33, the pre-05 ( horizontal piston movemnt ) and the after-05 ( vertical piston movemnt ) [in relation to the bar ]

Chances are when you buy a trials bike it’ll come with a pair of Magura HS33, they are used on trials bikes because of their ability to lock a wheel up completely. Once you have set your Magura up, it should be fine left to its own devices. You should never need to bleed your Magura. It may possibly need re-setting up every now and again, especially when you replace parts and such, but this is quite easily done with the right tools and patience.

There is also a wide variety of pads on the market from various companies. Heatsink pads were the first company to successfully produce pads in metal backings, these are replaceable and are much stiffer than standard powerpad backings as found on the standard magura pads
