Middleburn are a manufacturer of bicycle components including cranks, chainrings, hubs and a range of accessories. They are based in Alton, Hampshire, England. The main product they are known for are their cranks which are currently available in an RS7 model which carries a lifetime warrenty, and the RS8 which has more material machined away for XC type use. These cranks were first developed in 1991, and key to their enduring popularity is their reputation for longevity due to their method of manufacture. They are drop forged from 7075-T6 aluminium and then CNCed to a distinctive shape. RS7 cranks were adopted by Trials riders looking for cranks suited to the demands of trials, and this interest was reciprocated by Middleburn who released the trials-specific "Protrials" bashguard. This mates onto the proprietory Middleburn spline on the drive-side crank, and allows typical Trials sized chainrings (22 or 20teeth) to be bolted into place on the standard CD 5 hole mounting arrangement. In recent years Middleburn has released a "SuperProtrials" bashguard which features a 16 tooth sprocket and bashguard machined as one item. Middleburn crank based trials products continue to be popular with riders, most prolifically in the UK where they have historically grown with the scene and there is the advantage of an abundant source of 2nd hand cranks at market rates of typically around 1/3 of their first hand RRP.
