[edit] Tools needed
[edit] ProcedureFirst, remove the crank bolt using the 8mm Allen key. This is found at the opposite end to the pedal - you will notice that the crank will not simply come off after this, this is because it is still jammed on the taper. Note also that the bolt you removed was covering a large threaded hole - this is for the crank extractor. Next, prepare the crank extractor - find the part with the Allen key hole in it and, holding it, turn it anticlockwise all the way. Screw the large threaded part of the crank extractor into the threaded hole on the crank where you removed the bolt. Ensure it goes all the way in - tighten it gently with the spanner. Once the crank extractor is attached, insert the 8mm Allen key into the extractor and turn it clockwise. This will force a column that runs through the extractor against the taper, in turn forcing the crank off the taper. Continue until you can pull the crank arm off with your hands. Top Tip: Those who are using ISIS style cranks may find that their crank tool will not work because the bolt's for ISIS cranks are larger than that for Square taper. To combat this problem one can insert a 5p piece over the bolt hole in the Bottom Bracket which will give the extractor something to push against, it may be recommended to use a number of 5p pieces as they tend to deform rather easily, its against the law and the risk hanging is at your own risk :P [edit] See also
