> Rim brake

Rim brakes are bike brakes which rely on putting pressure on the rim of the wheel to stop it. The most popular rim brake for trials riding is the Magura HS33.

Some examples of rim brakes include:

  • Hydraulic rim brakes - such as the Magura HS33 and HS11.
  • Calliper brakes - never used in trials riding due to their poor power. Popular on road bikes.
  • Cantilever brakes - again, never used in trials riding due to their poor power.
  • V-brakes - arguably a type of calliper brake, they are normally given their own category. V-brakes is a trademark, but is normally used to refer to linear pull brakes. These are characterised by their long levers and the use of a noodle. They are used on cheaper trials bikes, though some riders prefer them to Maguras so may use them out of choice.

All but hydraulic rim brakes are operated by cables.

To improve the effectiveness of rim brakes, some people opt to use a brake booster.
