An interface system between bottom bracket and cranks . This somewhat outdated system relies upon a square sectioned taper which presses into a reciprocating slot machined into crank arms and is tightened / retained by an allen key bolt , usually 8 mm . This system has largely been replaced by ISIS and , to some extent Shimano's Octalink , both relying upon a circular sleeve with splines cut into the shaft .
