  1. Ignore minimum specs, they tend to tell you any old rubbish will run it to make you buy the game. I'd say to get a proper gaming rig, and I'd say you're looking at a minimum of £600, more like £750 if you want the best price point.
  2. I'd say buy a proper one. I have several W7 licenses through uni that are all legit, if I didn't I'd buy it though.
  3. If you find Agwa, buy doubles. 2 of them and you won't remember a thing. Had it on 2-3 occasions, never again. Very silly thing to do. EDIT: I'm getting mixed up... Not the same stuff, turns out I can't remember the name properly. The stuff I'm thinking of is bright green (almost luminous) and apparently it's 76%, although I was told that, haven't seen the bottle...
  4. 6 years and 4th highest poster ever right here, but whatever...
  5. Roughly 30% more processing power for almost 100% more money. If he doesn't need the power, it's basically wasted money, but no doesn't require a new motherboard, both on the 1155 socket. Unless you want a 3570k because I think that requires a Z77 socket motherboard so would need a posher motherboard, so would cost about £130 extra to go to an i5.
  6. I'd say with an SSD in there (that'd be the big improvement I'd make), the bottleneck would be the CPU, but to be honest having seen one of those chips in action I think it'll be up to it, certainly for gaming on a single GPU.
  7. OK, on that basis I just scrapped it all and specced this. The GTX570 might be a bit overkill... It's a last generation card but good value IMO at £220. But, you can pick them up a lot cheaper than that second hand. I haven't added an SSD in there, but I would strongly recommend one. My Crucial M4 128gb was £90, but the best £90 I ever spent on my system. All the stuff above should be fine for a "bolt together and game" system, but it won't overclock at all. The sandy bridge i3 chips don't have overclocking available, and that RAM definitely won't manage it. The cooler is probably overkill but it'll be quiet. The only other thing I'd add in would be a couple of intake fans for decent air flow, but as you will probably choose a different case I didn't add them in. I love Shinobi's (I have the XL version in white), so stuck it in because it's £50, which is standard for a mid-tower case. EDIT: Not that motherboard actually, it's only SATA2 so won't give the best performance with SSDs. I recommend this board instead (on the basis of almost no research). http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-386-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1965
  8. I starting to wonder if he needs something that fast to be honest... I think he could get away with an i3 based system, they're certainly enough for any single GPU based gaming system at the moment IMO. When you say video editing, is he rendering films etc? How is he doing it now? EDIT: Does he have an OS or does it need including?
  9. I'd say that the extra to push it up to £700 makes a big difference in quality, not performance though. A nice case, some quieter fans etc matter a lot to me, might not to him. As for Crossfire/SLI, I'd steer clear personally. I have crossfire cards and probably won't be doing for my next build. They're OK but too much hassle with micro-stutter and all that fun for me. If you really don't want to build then places will build it for you, but they seem to be a very good option right now. I'm playing with specs, can't even get it below £750. EDIT: Out of interest, what is he coming from? Any idea what kinda difference he wants to see?
  10. Aww shucks... Nah I'm a noob really compared to most people I know, listen to me if you want but I'd recommend going to a forum instead. (OCUK is my favourite). 32gb is a silly amount, 8gb is pretty much standard now where 4gb used to be. an 8gb kit is around £30-50, not many people bother with 16gb but a few do. 32gb is only needed if you're doing a lot of rendering though IMO. 128gb for an SSD is about right IMO, paid £90 for mine recently. When you say about £500, is that the limit or can he go to £650-700? That's where I believe the best value is for a high end system, after that they get silly expensive. My only piece of strong advice atm is to avoid AMD at all costs. 1-2 years ago they were churning out decent chips that offered good value, which is why I have one, but their latest line (Bulldozer) has been a monumental failure. Their 8 core flagship chip (FX-8150) will overclock well to around 4.8ghz, but still gets beaten by an i5 in most tests, whilst using a lot more power. The i5-3570K would be my "chip of choice" at the moment, or if that's too rich, the i3-2120. Just used one in my Dad's new system and it out-performs my 965BE by quite a margin. The one thing I can't advise you on is motherboards though. I've always stuck to Gigabyte as I've had two Asus boards and they were shit. I've got an MSI board in my server at the moment but only because it was the cheapest. I heard about the new Z77 Gigabyte boards weren't up to much these days, they like to set on fire apparently so no idea what I'd team with a 3570k. Is he into system building/overclocking at all or does he just want something to work? Any chance at all of him wanting multiple graphics cards or anything?
  11. Far too many times, fact is nobody gives a flying f**k, they just want to see the pictures of the shiney red M3 and the silly Audi with the orange roll cage without 42 posts of you being a pedantic old queen about a f**king form in between the pretty pictures. I don't call every detail out on the web design/computery forums I go on, yet I do it for 8 hours a day at work and often in the evenings as well. If people want to be wrong, let them be wrong. Life is just nicer when everyone just shuts the f**k up every once in a while. It could just be me that just wants to see the pretty M3 and the mental A3 though, I could be wrong.
  12. Well herp-de-f**king-derp, calm down nancy...
  13. Oh great, so now he can see everything I report? F**k that noise!
  14. Post in trials chat, not chit chat. Most of us in here haven't ridden in years.
  15. What is the spec of your current computer? It's often cheaper just to buy a complete new build if you just want something that works.
  16. Shrek, think you've already signed it off to be honest, I have a theory that anyone who asks for help from the TF girl trouble thread is intensely unhappy and knows full well they'd be better off just ending it. In the nicest possible way mate, you're a body-building/body-sculpting power-lifting health freak and she's changed and is doing nothing and getting fatter. Your options as I see them are three: Ignore it, it's just a bit of fat and it's her life, not yours. Unless it effects the part in both your lives that crosses over and creates "our life", then does it really matter? Talk to her gently. If I know you that's not really an option though, so you'll just have to talk straight instead. Be all "Dude I love you, but you're lazy, which is leading to fat, which is a different path to the one I want my life to tread". End it and lie, say it's because you've both changed, you think you're a homosexual now or some shit. Either way, you need to decide mate. The treading water bit is the least fun to be honest.
  17. Is that a phase-change cooler thingy I spot there? I've never been into benching really, only dabbled with overclocking. Servers are my new play thing. First person I've heard say they "downgraded" to a 2600k with a 6970 and 2100mhz RAM.....
  18. Why is it considered clever to park with one wheel up the banking? The whole car should be on the road surely?
  19. The readings might have been 10C, but they can't have been accurate readings, because air cooling means that the is always hotter than the air that cools it. (Otherwise the air from the room would be heating the CPU, which makes no sense. ) PCI fan to feed the cards more air? Yeh seen them but they're a bit loud for my liking I just have a couple of 230mm fans in this that shift a lot of air through the case. Got a new CPU cooler on the way though, my current one isn't really good enough. Ordered a Phanteks PH-TC14PE the other day, should handle things OK... Yeh there is a black version, I was going to buy it, but then saw the white version so I waited for it to come out. Love it!
  20. 12 degrees or 24 degrees sounds like a dodgy reading to me. It can never have run at 12 degrees, as room temperature is higher than that. Mine idles about 35 and under heavy load goes to around 55. Cases stopped looking vile and started looking sleek and minimalist. Not watercooled yet but my new case has plenty of room for it. I can fit a 360mm rad, a 240mm thick rad and a 140mm thick rad at the same time.
  21. Niceeee, IDE? I'm running a 40gb IDE boot drive in the server at the moment with a 120gb backup drive. I refuse to buy a load of 2-3tb drives whilst the prices are still so high.
