With regards to the Pro-Tec lid - I was under the impression that the reason it doesn't meet safety standards was because it has foam in it. So in a big collision it doesn't actually do that much. But in your everyday low-impact knocks from trials etc it's actually better because there's more cushioning. Something like that. Either way, if you want one have a look on eBay

First off the BB would be lower - so you'd have less ground clearance. As you've already got +45mm that shouldn't be a problem (most 24" frames are +30mm or so). Apart from that there wouldn't be too much difference. The smaller wheels don't roll so well which makes taps ever-so-slightly harder, but I can't see much of a problem.

I'm not saying it's anything to do with one brake exerting more 'pressure' or anything to do with open systems either. But there is obviously a reason why DH brakes can be 6 or 8 pot, whereas the best brakes for trials are more like 1 or 2.

You're right, but I think other factors such as friction coefficients and heat dissipation are important on discs, especially when used for DH etc.
