It's not a bad deal from what I can gather, but it's not amazing either. These days you can't really get great deals on computers - since everyone is competing and profit margins are tiny. Even PCWorld don't really rip you off any more (though they do still install all sorts of unnecessary crap on it). Btw, that screen will be toss. Spend less on the computer and more on the screen

I use the adjustable hammer. Once you loosen it a bit, it sometimes comes off. That might depend on how much it's dug in though.

Aluminium forks look better than steel. Steel forks + steel frame is ok, but don't use steel forks + alu frame, that would be madness. Just joking really, it's not that important. Most decent forks are aluminium now though. If you don't want a disc mount (for the future) then Pashleys would be OK, and cheap.

Mine's pretty much the same as yours: (NTL too)

That looks ridiculously painful. Ow ow ow. His leg must've looked hella weird after it happened. Get well soon

It depends if you need it. Realistically if you live close to uni, you're not gonna use it and it costs loads. I've just got rid of my car because I can't afford to run it. When you add up insurance + tax + service + MOT + petrol etc it wasn't really worth it for me. If you're loaded there's no problem

In my case, it's definitely not the remote (I had that before MCE and there were no problems). I think it's something to do with MCE and the program/record scheduler thing but not sure.

Um, the area you listed is the gay capital of Manchester. Just in case you didn't know. I wouldn't wanna live there but that's me. You won't get any peace there though. The university is about a mile south of the city centre, so there's not really any point in paying city centre prices, you might as well live in one of the suburbs around the university (Hulme, Levenshulme, Fallowfield etc), unless you particularly want to live in the city. Some suburbs are nicer than others, though. Banks, they're all pretty much the same. You can shop around for deals and just get the best one. Don't go for a very small bank though - HSBC/Barclays/Royal Bank of Scotland/NatWest are all big enough to have a branch in every town. There's plenty of bike shops in Manchester now so you could just choose a bike when you get here. There's a branch of EVANS' in the city centre. For online places for road bikes I'm not really sure. Sizing is the same, but for road bikes you might have to learn how to use the metric system

I have to say I laughed quite a lot when Munki posted up that 'Snape Killed Dumbledore' thing for the last book It's really harsh on people who are interested, but it did make me laugh. And then when I was drunk I couldn't help myself from telling a mate, and he got pretty annoyed.

Haha, yeah if you find a solution, let me know. If I leave my computer on Hibernate, it ALWAYS wakes up at 9:18 AM. Which is pretty weird. But yeah, this has only started since I got Windows MCE, with a TV card (USB thing). If yours is the same problem, you could try shutting it down properly (not hibernate).

I was gonna suggest using an external screen. You can get decent CRTs for next to nothing these days (second hand) so it might be worth getting a 19" or so (1280 res or higher) CRT for when you're at home, to use with the Macbook. That's the thing, you pay a premium for a mac in exactly the same way you pay more for a Thinkpad - They tend to be higher quality (Vaios are just expensive because they're Sony ). You can't compare my Powerbook to a random chunky PC laptop (E.g. Dell etc), it's a MUCH nicer machine, from the near-silent hum it makes to the way the lid closes really nicely. It sounds pretty gay but it's true.

There's an LG 22" that's under £200 that's supposed to be decent, most others for that sort of money aren't worth bothering with. If you want image quality, then the Samsung 215TW is apparently the daddy, but that's £250 ish and only 21" (though the same resolution). The Dell 22" is supposed to be pretty rubbish for the price. Or get the Samsung 226BW because it looks pimp

I agree with JTM, the fewer kids cruising the better. Obviously it's gonna inconvenience a few people, but if it saves lots of lives then it's a good idea. ANYONE who's 17-18 driving at night with 3-4 of their mates is going to show off a little bit/get egged on a little bit, it's human nature. You know it's true. Er yes they have. See the 'for every 100,000 motorists' bit.

This is a load of rubbish. Photoshop on old macs is rubbish. Even on my Powerbook 1.5GHz (PowerPC) which is only 18 months old, CS2 is really, really slow. Conversely, my 3 year old PC (Athlon 64 3200+) runs CS2 very nicely indeed. The new Intel macs are pretty decent, and as long as you get CS3 (which is made for Intel) and not an older version, it's actually pretty fast. Still, I agree with Poopipe and other people - if you want a computer to be as powerful (in photoshop) for as little money as possible, get a desktop PC. I mean, you could buy my PC for under £250 probably, and it's enough for photoshop. I like my Powerbook and I'll probably buy macs in future, but that's only because I really like using OS X. If you want a decent laptop that will do a bit of everything, and still be decent in Photoshop, then a Macbook is probably a pretty good idea, especially with the educational discount. But if you really just need a good photoshop computer, get a PC (With a nice screen of course).

Your parents let you? Facebook is just myspace for normal people. Myspace is definitely linked to music and now emo stuff - normal people are scared off. Unless they shake that image, then no other groups in society will join, but if they do try and go more mainstream, they will lose the emos (You know what they think of MAINSTREAM). Plus anyone with any common sense is pissed off with the time it takes to load, read, or find ANYTHING on there.

The stickies are for threads which are either important and everyone needs to see (announcements etc) or ones that get used every day (Random small questions). This thread is really no different to the hundreds of other threads in Chit-Chat. If we stickied everything, there wouldn't be much point, would there?

I like my zoot. Slightly longer than an Ashton which is overall better for me at least. I find it spins better too. Can't compare it to the Ciguena though. I'm not sure about having two frames and swapping bits over, either. It'd be a lot of hassle!

I don't believe you. One will be spaced differently or something. Either way, the WAN (internet) port will be either the right hand one or the left hand one (probably the left). I don't believe you. I've got them shoes too. They're OK (Apart from the POS laces), but they don't really pass as 'normal' shoes when you're off the bike (especially when they're soaking wet, dirty and smelly). Plus, as you say, they're pretty uncomfortable to walk any distance in. I'd be tempted to just get some full-on SPD shoes and sod the 'look'. Besides, all the roady types will think you're cool, riding a fixed gear bike, but it's not as if anyone else will! But yeah, SPDs are aces. Well worth the investment. Plus once you know how to use them (takes like a day at the most), they're easier to get out of than toes clips, no matter how loose. And a hundred times easier to clip back in. In conclusion, SPDs ace, clips rubbish. Er no, why?!

I read on a website once about the 'bike courier olympics' that are held in America somewhere. One of the events is longest skid on a fixed gear. And apparently the record for bunny hopping a road bike is over a metre Road bike sizing:
