Unless you meant it isn't a good freewheel compared to todays standards. Either way it's got nothing to do with him changing his opinion.

I guess you can still view the forum as a guest, or the only thing he actually can do is update his status? Possibly when the admin disabled pre-members from using the status updates they didn't consider also stopping the people in the 'validating' group as well. He has no posts probably because he can't actually post.

It's got nothing to do with the validation system, it's when they've joined but not fully activated their account by click on the confirmation email. The they become a pre-member.
