  1. To add absolutely nothing useful to the argument I point you in the direction of Those Fundies Say the Darndest Things where records of fundamental christian chatrooms are kept. Bear in mind that most Christians aren't like this. Andy
  2. It's something about things I think were called compatibility equations - if the rod is fixed at both ends then you know the strain will be the same in both of them. Therefore if you know the load applied you can work out the extension by working out some sort of combined force extension relationship for the two of them. Once you know that the strain you can work out the stress in each part of the rod (i assume you're not doing Poisson's ratio stuff at the moment?). Andy
  3. If you're buying a computer for your mum i'd go with getting a ready built - it might be much cheaper to build one yourself or buy off ebay, but there's much better peace of mind buying from a big company, plus if it goes wrong you can just tell them to fix it. I say this after having to give remote computer support to parents after building them a computer while I was at uni. If you're mum's not computer savvy it's much easier for them to have one where you can pretty much guarantee that if something has gone wrong it's either your mum's fault and is fixable, or is the manufacturers fault and they'll fix it for you. Andy
  4. I remember my sister bought a copy a few years and I don't think it was that much as an academic copy - I think you should be able to get it for around 50-100 quid if you need it.
  5. Cheers guys - got woken up by it and wondered what the hell was going on so looked on google for anything about it then thought "I know - I'll check Trials-Forum". Glad to know it's not just in my head.
  6. I got a similar problem when i used on board sound - it's worth spending a bit of cash and getting a separate soundcard from someone from creative. They don't cost a whole lot ebay link Seriously - it should sort it even under heavy load. Andy
  7. Red white and yellow are composite cables: the yellow takes the video signal and the red and white deal with the two channels of stereo sound (can't remember which is which). Component is different and uses three cables purely to carry the video signal splitting it up something along the lines of the amount of red, the amount of blue, and the brightness of the picture, which can be recombined to give a proper picture. Component video is capable of transmitting a high def signal. I think it may be quite similar to the rgb used in scart, but scart has extra pins which can also do composite video, and sound if i remember right. Andy.
  8. I don't know how you can say that - I really like them both and think in a lot of ways the humour is quite similar
  9. I bought one of these Blackspire chain devices second hand off a mate and it was superb. There just isn't any way for the chain to come out at all. Bit pricey brand new though Andy
  10. Mine shuts off the screen immediately if you remove the technical clothes peg device
  11. I can't stand the way he gets into these contrived emergency situations which are dangerous to him but just fine and dandy to the film crew. Ray Mears ***.

  13. Woopie doo and that's one reason why insurance costs keep going up. cool.
  14. for that sort of money it's probably not a bad idea to just get yourself on Ebay and get a direct replacement. In an exec car like an A4 it's nice to keep the thing looking OEM anyway in my view Andy
  15. I think you may have missed the point slightly unless altec lansing make passive speakers to be powered by a stereo amp Personally I am quite a fan of the Eltax monitor IIIs from Richer Sounds The Tannoys look quite nice as well, but if you go somewhere like Superfi you can take your amp along and with a bit of luck they'll let you try the speakers out with your amp to see how they sound before you buy. Kudos to you for buying NAD btw - i'm a fan Edit: alright they do make proper stereo speakers but it's not what you meant is it?
  16. Cheers guys - Meck - "it feels like home" and the sample I was looking for was Felix "Don't you want me"
  17. Right folks - i've just heard a tune on Scott Mills floorfillers called "it feels like home" and i think it's by someone called Mack. I can't find it and it had a great sample from an old dance tune. Can anybody tell me if i've got the name right? Cheers, Andy
  18. http://www.angelfire.com/film/jonnyspage/T...nes___setup.htm i think that's got it if you scroll down far enough
  19. You could try: Blue Monday - New Order Tainted Love - Soft Cell
  20. [long boring explanation] I've started a PhD on micro holographic Particle Image Velocimetry (uPIV) which is pretty much photographing fluid flows which have tracer particles in which are illuminated by a laser (the object beam). In order to get a hologram you shine a second laser beam called a reference beam onto the ccd. The two beams interfere with each other and from the way the interference pattern looks you can work out where the particles are in 3d space with one photograph. You do the same again and you can get 3 component 3 dimensional data for fluid flow characteristics within the measurement volume. The more accurate the data I get out the better the results will be.[/long boring explanation] And I want to know how they work
  21. Right folks, this is a bit of a long shot but i've got the use of a Nikon D50 camera at uni and it can take photos in .nef format. I've found out as much as that it's a raw format which records the data from each pixel in the ccd without losing any of the data, but i want a way to view the individual values of brightness for each pixel. I've tried opening a file in notepad but there's not a whole lot of help there. Can anyone suggest a program that will allow me to read the .nef into some sort of array with a single cell for each pixel? or failing that any other way to interrogate the file. Cheers, Andy
  22. Good stuff. I managed to completely miss them first time around. Hope they come to the UK at some point. Andy
