  3. I sure am!!! Thankfully Her Majesty is paying for me though. You done much? Its addictive!!!
  4. Im studying Avionics if you still need help?
  5. Not true. Although it is an advantage.
  6. Not considered going straight for a commission then? The worst they can say is no.....
  7. Hey, Im not in the RAF but trying pretty damn hard to get in! At uni at the moment in the Air Squadron and working towards becoming a pilot bursar. Im not sure how it works for weapons tech but for a commission application it took about 3 weeks after I sent application until I had my presentation then a further month for my filter interview. Then about 4 months for a Cranwell date. Could be totally different for enlisted applications though. All I can say is that you should be ready for your interview before you send the application. Read all of the RAF website over and over again. Learn about all your training, both where and how long it takes. Read the papers and keep up to date with current affairs. Also, know all your types and the roles that they carry out. In the interview they will ask all about your life. Make sure you answer all when questions with both a year and month. It may be worth getting a visit to a RAF base and talking to some serving personnel, it shows that you really are keen. You can never be to prepared really. Just remember that during selection you are only competing against your self - not the other candidates. After speaking to several techies that have spent the last 20 years arming tornado my only thought is that it may become a tad boring? Anyway, if you try hard enough - you will get in. Good luck Gordy
  8. Officers are respected - it all comes down to being a team. The officer leads by example - first in last out and so on! The officer risks his life for the team, they risk theirs for the officer! Through basic training the chain of command is drilled into you, they change the way you think! Civi life and mil life are very different - in every way! Of course it all depends on the officer and how stuck up he is!
  9. Yo, unluck man! Try again, you can apply again within 6 months, just cant go for the apptitude tests - well thats how it works in the RAF. Stick at it, being an Officer would be much more rewarding and interesteing in my opinoion. I applied for a commision in the RAF, past all the interviews and tests to be a pilot and was looking like I was going to be offered a place at IOT......... THEN, today, got a letter in saying I have been declared "Permanetly Unfit". f**king gutted! RAF is the only thing I have wanted to do since a kid. Wasted 13 months and a whole lot of cash! Off to Uni next year then apply to the FAA in the Navy as they are a bit less stringent on medical standards. Practice all the question in the test again an again - there are loads of sites and books out their full of practice questions! Read the papers every day and take notes of all key events - great help when you go to AIB. Get involved in your community - they love that sort if thing! Any work you do now will be of great help if you apply again. Anyways, good luck, dont give up and if you dont get it, join as a marine, gain some expericance.....then get your commision!!! Again, good luck - with what ever you do! Gordy! PS. Scopes, what you going for in the RAF, how far in are you? Been to OASC? One piece of advice..... ask to see your Medical Attendance Report before your GP sends it. You can then appeal or comment on any issues it has! Good luck!
  10. Unconditional offers to do Avionics or Aeronautical Engineering at Glasgow Uni! Just need to choose!

    Broken Bones

Collar bone while in Italy - spent hours in an Italian hospital filling in forms before they would do anything! The 23 hour bus journey home wasn't exactly fun..... I thought i was invincible before it! hahaha Gordon

  13. Mk 1 gti. Original in white with BBS's and VW big bumber kit S2 Quattro. The new RS4. Bit of a VAG freak..... Also the M3 e30 is prity nice!
  14. Hey Im also trying my hardest to fly helicopters for a living. I have done alot of reading about it. First off, have you ever flown before? If not, get a lesson or 2 booked before you commit to anything! To gain you Commercial Pilots Licese you are looking at just under a year full time and about £50k. Dont beleive the flight schools! To be honest though, a CPL alone is not worth a thing - no operators are going to employe someone as a pilot with minimum hours. You need about a 1000 before people start looking at you. Your only realistic options are: Join the forces, have them pay for your training and then give you a job. However, if you have had as much as a cough since you were young your not going to get in!!! Option 2 is to do your CPL and then your flight instructors rating, then spend a few years instructing to build your hours. This is going to cost you are £65k. Option 3 is to do you CPL and then your Instrument Rating - this is the route to off-shore flying. At the present, with a CPL and IR you are prity likely to get a job as a co-jo in the North Sea. However, this way is expensive..... you are not going to see much change out of £100k!! and your not even gurateed a job!!! All I can say is that there are 1000's of other people out there with CPL's and low hours so every job opening is very over subscribed! In the helicopter industry, its not what you know, its who you know!! After you get you qualifications, you would be flying back and for to oil rigs as a co-jo for many years to gain experiance! SAR or police work is many years away! My plans are: Continue working till I get enough money to gain my people. After that, beagin my theory - while working full time. Come Sept next year, off to uni to study avionics. Continue theory work. Work most of summer then do some hour building - continue this for a few years. Leave uni, get a job in avionics, continue hour building. Do my cpl course. Then, depending on the funds, do either my IR or FI. Thats the plan or dream!! I reccomend to pop into your Armed Forces Careers Office for a chat. The navy is the best option for flying helicopters. The aviation industry changes so quickly, come this time next year there maybe no pilot oppenings - or there could be loads! Good luck man! It aint going to be easy!! Unless you parents are MINTED and willing to fund you training!! lol! Gordon Sorry about the rubbsih speeling and punctuation......... im tired!
  15. Hey Got a compass test next week and just wondering if any of you have done one and if you have any tips for me? What sort of thing should I be revising? Any help much appreciated! Thanks Gordon

    Picture War

    Would soak up the oil
  19. Hey Yeah you can ride them on the road but I don’t really recommend it. If you sit with over half throttle on the road for a length of time the engine overheats and basicly dies!. due to this, you end up cruising at around 40 ish or about 1/3 throttle. Instead of a van I recommend one of these, it just attaches to your toe ball - rack , they are really good! Bike wise I recommend a Beta as they are easy to work on, reliable and very nice to ride! As for size I recommend a 125 to start with, if you were to get a 250 you would find yourself just using the power to get up stuff. As far as maintenance goes, after every ride I clean the carb, plug, filter and generally oil and check everything. the more time you spend prepping your bike, the less chance it will break! You can go months without spending much but then have a bad fall at a trial you can end up spending over £100 on a few bits! Trials Central is full of information and is well worth a look! Gordon
  20. Iv got an 06 Beta 250. Beta's are really good to ride! Gas gas are nice and light and ride quite well but they ain't very reliable!
  21. Yo! Got some links: Bristol Rat Race Danny Aviemore Danny Mac Promo Think there are more but cant remeber! Cheers Gordon
