Muel
Reet, hi.I got given a broken computer from someone my Mum knows, it was missing the jumper of the back of the HD, so I put one on.It boots up to the Windows XP loading screen, then the bar goes really slowly, then the screen goes onto standby, if you turn it back on, it says no signal input.Interestingly, the computer will not load linux either from a live CD, gets the boot screen up fine, just doesn't go any further.Any ideas? Where would be a better place to ask? I presume there is a forum as big as this one for mending this sort of thing somewhere.EDIT: Come on guys, just give me the url of a forum and I'll be happy, I found one which has 8K members so I signed up, but I want to know which ones you lot rate. Muel
I've tried, it won't respond to the F8 key, or the F10 Key.I'll try some others.
Nick Garland
So you turn the screen off, then on and it says no signal input HOWEVER the pc is still turned on?AND then pc is not picking up key input? Are you using a wired keyboard or wireless?
Danny
Unplug as much unnecessary hardware as possible i.e. 1 stick of ram if it has 2 etc. Try narrow down the problem a bit. What did the live cd do?
Muel
Live CD did nothing, I know it works, I used it to install Linux on my spare 10GB HD.It is a barebones sort of system anyway, 256mb of ram, 1.8ghz Celeron processor.I tried the HD it came with in my big comp, it won't run it. I am going to try the Linux disc in it.
Muel
I've had a bit of success.I have got to boot past the loading screen! You get about 2 seconds of the XP scandisk screen before the signal dies. Also, I got the Live CD to work for Linux, the Fedora version. It works up until it says I am loading some shit into the kernel, then it dies.It might be a GFX problem, and, unfortunately, they are on board, so it could get expensive, or it could be a problem with the kernel, I'm going to look into it more when I get home, I'm off to college now, at 7:30.I joined the Linux forum, so I'm getting some help on there, but only for getting it installed on my main comp. Muel
Bit more success, it now boots to the Configure New Windows Install screen, for about 1 second.I am guessing it's a mechanical thing, which is shit, because it has on board graphics, so it's a new motherboard if that won't go.
