What ..... do you think it may be pulling its self up ?

should i twat it down the fork and just wack in a new star nut ?

Check your forks, that as you are tightening your topcap it isn't pulling them apart.

WFT......sorry i really dont understand what your saying

pulling the forks appart?

it may be pulling up, draw a line with a permanent marker round the star nut on the inside of the steerer, then next time it comes loose, you can see if it has moved. if it is knackered, you could just bash it down and put a new one in, or get a long rod and knock it out the top through the hole where the steerer joins the crown.

EDIT, or it could be what Netherking said...

Yeah, that was a shit explanation. Check your forks for a crack basically.

The star nut doesn't do anything above tensioning the headset, you can remove it and ride without it if you want.

I once solved this by lightly filing the steerer tube area to roughen the surface, and lamping the bolts up. It gives it enough purchase to not move.
