V-brakes?

Jitters

Recommended Posts

I have a beat up zm2 with v-brakes all around. Picked up some gooey pads and did a light grind on the rims, which seems to work right nice- even wet. Mind you, I'm only learning - so no deadly gaps or big stuff yet, but does anyone else just stick with the rim brakes front and rear?

Lately I've noticed that most places (in Canada - which is closest to me) seem to be offering forks, hubs and whatnot that only support disc brakes. I'd like to invest in a stock bike next year and wanted to know if there is a real advantage to disc brakes over properly set up mechanical v-brakes with a grind. I don't want to get into the Megura or simlar hyrdraulic brake set ups. I'd like to try to keep front and rear the same so my trips to the bike store are simple.

Most of my disc braking experience comes from my XC Rush on 160mm Avid mech. BB5s which seem smooth. but that doesn't seem condusinve to trials brakes.

Thanks for any useful input!

If you get a bike frame thats designed for discs like the simtra or the monty then it runs really nice but no nicer thne a great set of vees.

Pretty much the only brake worth putting on the back would be a hope or an avid code or similar brake which is like twice as expensive as avid ultimates and koxx pads with a nice lever and cable. Not to mention vee brakes have the best feel of the 3.

I had a Hope Disk Brake on the front of my bike for a while. I changed to a XTR V-Brake and i would never use a disk again they seem so much better to ride with.

I dont use a rim grind with my V-Brake all that i do is run a good cable with a set of heatsink red pads, I then put a small amount of tar on my rim and it is so sharp, I love it. (Y)

v-brakes are descent but it just depends what the set up of them are for example good pads and not a sluggish lever work absolutley mint but it also depends on how you treat them if you treat them badly there oviously going to brake but if you keep lubricating them they will stay good ive have a set of v-brakes on my jump bike on the back i have moe pads and on the front i have standard pads and its amazing :D

jarvis.
