Don't take this the wrong way, but by virtue of the fact you referred to the truss rod as "that screw that alters the neck position" I'd suggest you might want to take it to get done professionally, or at the very least look up how to set up a guitar on the internet. I just don't want to see you damage your guitar by being overzealous with the truss rod! I'm not sure why you're wanting to jump up to such thick strings though, generally you'd only go up to 13s if you're tuning down really low. If you're playing in standard then 10s are more the norm, if you start going too thick in standard you're really going to struggle to bend them. You will get a 'fuller' sound with thick strings, but really their main advantage is when you start tuning low so that you can keep the string tension. thanks, I posted in here about fret buzzing and have tinkered with the truss rod a bit. I read a quick guide saying something about bends and they recommend light top strings then heavier ones for bottom. Truth man, if you don't now what a truss rod is you probably don't know what it does. When I tried something similar many moons ago, it sounded f**king awful. That could've been something to do with the shit amp, shit car speakers setup though! I did also blow that amp while having that setup, but I'm not certain whether it was that to blame, or the 14 year old nu-metal sound I was loving (FULL BASS, NO MIDS, FULL TREBLE, FULL GAIN, FULL VOLUME) at the time... f**k that's nearly 10 years ago. Revolver Posted September 7, 2010 Report Share Posted September 7, 2010 I usually use high mids, medium bass and lowish treble, I can't stand tinny treble, which my amp specialises in. Max gain, of course, but this is a 30w amp, and I don't need it to be much more than 1/4 on the master volume thingy. The car speakers are aftermarket ones so they should be decent. I reckon what'll happen is the power will be shared through the speakers, so the more of them I use the more volume I need, and the more chance it might break. I've got some 6x9 speakers which I think might be cool, but the risk is mounting speakers that are too small. I have a set of speakers with a component box and I believe this is used to send high frequencies to one speaker and low to another.. and the amp won't have this so if I put small ones on they might pop with too much bass. What amp are we talking about here? Surely if you're that interested in trying, you could buy one of those ones that come in the Squire starter packs on ebay? Pretty sure they go for peanuts. I had one of those for a long time while I was in a band called Violet High. I wish someone had told me to throw it from the tallest building I could find... Then again, having the full floorboard for it was nice. Personally I'd say you don't wanna be adding anything to that really - just be tweaking with the amps own sound. Maybe stick some greenbacks in it or something if you think different speakers would help? I know what you mean about the real thin range of the treble knob, it was f**king horrible. When I look on google shopping, their combos are £1000+, which is a bit out of my price range. I was thinking about buying something like a marshall, one with valves, but the other thing is, I'm no band player, I just plug it in and have a twang, so I don't need 100w or more. I don't really even need 30... I'd rather modify the amp with stuff I've got already, or to buy a whole new one than buy different speakers. You'd need to get yourself a cab, but those can be picked up dirt cheap. 15w of the most surprising power, tone and downright f**king beauty in a tiny weeny package. I can vouch for the fact they're amazing - a lot of the Pocket Rocket gigs were done with one. With a 2x12 cab you'll wonder why you ever had the Spider II. With a 1x12 you'd still feel the same. You literally cannot beat an Orange amp. Unless it's a Fender Dual Rectifier, but that's a debate I have with myself often.
