Trials-Forum Dead? :O

...there are a whole bunch of people on here who can discuss development of this forum without it turning into a bitch fest. So why hide those topics away from those many members? Why reduce it to the ideas of a dozen or so people who weren't really selected because of their forum development skills, but because of their level of respect. I personally have been very vocal about suggestions for the forum, some of which have actually been implemented (FS / WTD been split up into two subforums for example), I'm not made a SM because of my lack of ability to make valid suggestions, but because I'm not a respected enough member. There's no reason why the topics in SM chat shouldn't be discussed openly with the rest of the members. TF should use it's member base as the great resource is it, and from time to time we see that happen with great results.

That's a fair point but... what's stopping anyone creating topics in the main forums discussing these things? Nothing at all. In fact from what I remember the discussion on splitting up the For Sale/Wanted stuff was all in the main forum and Tom and Danny fairly regularly ask for opinions and suggestions in Chit Chat when an idea is raised.

You're right here's nothing stopping a new topic been created. But...

1. If The Admin, Mods or SM come up with a suggestion it'll end up in Sm chat where non of the regular members will even know the idea is being discussed. I can't post up my thoughts on an idea if I don't know what the idea is.

2. I could flip what you said right back over to and say 'Why does it have to be posted in SM chat to begin with?'.

The split of forsale / wanted was done 100% outside of SM chat (as far as I can tell) and was noted that the vast majority of the forum agreed, came up with potential problems which were in turn discussed and either solved or labeled as insignificant and then the idea was put into place. Would there really have been any advantage to having that same discussion within SM chat with just a handful of people?

Exactly. Keep it mind most of the 'Forum Development' doesn't even effect the vast majority of the forum. There is nothing much that an SM can input on there as most of it is to do with moderators functions.

I still don't quite see what you're getting at I'm afraid...

1. If Admin, Mods or SM's come up with a (possibly) good idea, chances are someone will create a topic in Chit Chat to discuss it and get feedback from the main forum. Everyone would therefore get their say.

2. Why does what have to be posted in SM chat? My comment pointed at the fact that the For Sale topics were discussed in the main forum and demonstrates perfectly why this discussion is meaningless. If anyone has a good idea they just need to make a topic for discussion and away you go, never needs to go anywhere near SM Chat.

If the split of the For Sale stuff had been suggested in SM Chat, chances are it would've been approved in there and then someone (probably Tom/Danny) would've started a topic in Chit Chat to discuss suggestions. So it would still be win-win.

To be entirely honest with you and i don't mean this to be a personal attack of any sort but when i think "JT!" my mind jumps to several occasions where you've argued slightly too far over seemingly menial things and you seem to have moaned/bitched about the Senior members existence several times when these kind of topics pop up. Again, I can't stress enough how much this isn't a directed attack or anything, i'm just trying to say it how i see it. With that in mind i wouldn't be inclined to agree that your lack of SM status is entirely based on your level of respect. Given those sentences make me sound like i'm picking out faults for the sake of it i want you to know that I appreciate that you have been here for a long time and that you can put ideas into coherent text and you contribute to idea development well and that personally, i do respect you very much for that.

The current SM choosing system is in place, probably won't change and takes a long time. New people do get added and there is a need for them and the separate forum they have access to.

It does stike me however, that everyone here that is complaining are basing their opinions purely on speculation. Few people know what actually is in SM chat but it seems a lot of people are getting worked up over something they know nothing about. The fact is someone went to the effort of making the forums suggestions thread in SM chat and nobody has bothered in the main forums, to me that speaks volumes on its own that non-SM members probably aren't concerned with it or if they are then for the most part they're too lazy to start anything serious about it. Besides, what makes everyone think every suggestion that concerns the rest of the forum members isn't made a topic in chit chat? With decisions like new moderator functions/buttons being added/removed it would be largely irrelevant to include the rest of the forum as they won't know it's going on or they won't have access to it.

Well if the forum was never more alive last night on a particular topic in Chit Chat, admin Tomturd certainly killed it dead.

I'm not fussed if watching people eating their own shit and mutilating their bodies is your 'thing'... thats your business. But its not for discussion on here. If you have a problem, take it up privately ;)

Agreed. That thread was doomed for closure, especially on a forum frequented mainly by teenage boys.

If you think there are no interesting topics on the forum then make one yourself and try to keep the chat active, theres nothing stopping you and you don't have to be a SM to make interesting topics. Without New Members chat the main forum would be swamped with retards and without senior members/mods the retards that slip through the net would be able to run free and ruin it for everyone else.

The banter would have eventually dwindled naturally like all topics do, so it wasn't really necessary to kill the banter so abruptly because you went weak at the knees and got all sensitive. What is point of a chit chat thread if you don't have the freedom to express your own chit chat, talk about censorship gone overboard :S

Ps, i fully support the removal of the video links (Y) but banter is just harmless banter.

I think a lot of people on this forum need to remember that, including me.

I'm pretty certain the thread wasn't pulled because Tom went weak at the knees and got all sensitive... The average age on here is something like 15 but there are some younger members down to 10-12 I guess (I'm 28 so going by the maths there must be some 2 year olds as well... that's how it works isn't it?). They really ought not to be exposed to that sort of stuff. They'd only be a google search away from finding some very gross and in some places truly sick things which to be honest nobody ought to be exposed to! A lot of those sorts of things also have pretty innocent sounding names too so the search is likely to bring up something rather unexpected.

As with anything these days, the mods and admin on here have a certain 'duty of care' to protect the users and forum itself from things that could damage either. In that respect there was no way that discussion could continue in my mind.

Your absolutely right there but unfortunately, WE LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD, and the censorship of such things will only backfire in the real world.

So we should abolish the 9pm watershed, allow people to call each other cunts on the Radio and show porn on the BBC instead of kids shows at 3.30pm?

Or... Should we at least try to keep these things away from the ones most impressionable when we have the power to do so?

Oooh, oooh, I know this one! Is it... option 1?

Yeah and thanks to our actions, we already live in a modern society of underage drinking, smoking, sex, we're doing a great job aren't we (Y)

What are you proposing as a solution? A compulsory thread on minging videos on every forum on the internet? That'd fix it... We're not talking about modern society here - we're talking about a thread that everyone knows wasn't going to last because it was inappropriate considering who uses the forum. Maybe it's just me who realised it straight away because I've posted so many of them before...

Censorship isn't the 'cause of all that its bad parenting.

There's age restrictions on stuff to help protect people but if parents choose to ignore it and buy the stuff for their kids anyways then theres nothing anyone can really do to stop it. Take COD for example, its an 18 rated game with loads of violence but about 90% of the online players with headsets are about 13/14 year old kids.

Not all of it's bad parenting! I'm sure most people on here who smoke and drink etc did so before the legal age. Besides, a lot of people are getting served for age rated products without being ID'd these days. I've been served cigarettes and alcohol in your Somerfield before and I can get into most clubs and that no sweat these days. The parenting only really comes into play with the cliché examples in my opinion, and other than that I think parenting only really influences you a little bit. I know I was taught to be a good little Catholic girl and that didn't really happen.

When you signed up to the forum, you agreed not to post stuff like that - as did everyone else. There are plenty of younger riders on here, so it's a bit sketch having stuff like that on there. We direct rider's parents onto TF to get info too, so if we're directing them onto a site that's got porn and random offensive stuff on it it's not really going to make a good impression of riders as a whole? If you want to look at stuff like that, there's a million places online you can do it.

So how would allowing more 'adult' content be viewable by minors be a good thing, which you're saying it is? What you're saying (surprisingly...) makes no sense at all.
