In cars where the rear screen actually attracts dirt like my old Passat I'd definitely leave it. The Sciroccos one I removed, because it was particularly ugly and never got used, as the rear screen doesn't really get dirty anyway. However I do wash my car quite a lot, so I guess if I got lazy I would need a wiper. The Fabia wiper is probably a better option in the long run. The place I bought the cambelt from (SBD - who are well-regarded in tuning circles) reckon it's fine, but I'm not so sure... Never seen that before! does it even out when it's revved or...? I can't see it coming off though! SUCCESS! I now have fully working lights, working indicators, working hazards and a handbrake that's GR8 4 SKIDZ. Greetings Posted May 22, 2013 Report Share Posted May 22, 2013 Just a few pics. Currently working on getting the car back into shape. It looks like crap, so many things are falling off it's unreal. Suspension is almost dead too which is annoying since I can't afford to spend 3 grand on an upgrade yet. Been trying to source some rear springs but with no luck. AST seems to be the cheapest option currently but there's plenty of cars running this, we would like to give Proflex, Ohlins or Reiger a try. Gandalf the Yellow Posted May 22, 2013 Report Share Posted May 22, 2013 on the subject of wipers... front blades look so much better when it's factory aero/arms, you're right, little things that make all the difference... so my rear wiper was rusty and blade was knackered so I opted for a new arm and blade, only £10, quality isn't great but it looks alright for the money. again love how it tidy the whole rear end up... before: after: while on the bay I thought I'd splash out on some cheapo centre caps... so glad to have the Golf back after some weeks.everything sorted on it and passed MOT so I'm pretty pleased (and thank seamons for helping me out with some ARB knowledge!), drives sooooo tight. yes I will look into some locking wheel nuts soon, the spacers I run use longer bolts so it's getting long locking wheel nuts.. Lights almost work, I've now lost the dash lights and rear number plate light (i think these are all on the same circuit) and the red light above the ignition (assuming this is the ignition warning light?) won't go out. Went and gave the car a quick wash today too (jetwashed it like a motherf**ker, detailing KING) and just as i dried it all off, it pissed it down. The world is not my friend. Bloody hell, no wonder your set-up always looks crashy, 2cm of negative travel's nothing most single-seaters will have more than that, for a tin-top driving on rough surfaces that's really not enough. In answer to your question though, unless you're rolling enough to run out of travel then it's not going to make any difference. If you are reaching the end of your travel through just roll, (which is something that shouldn't really be happening) then yes, you will get more roll with more travel. To reduce the roll you either need stiffer spring rates/shocks (shocks will only really reduce roll on turn-in/direction change, not in the middle of a long corner), stiffer anti-roll bars, lower the center of gravity, or raise the roll-center. Personally - looking at the sort of terrain you are thrashing through and given that you're getting new shocks anyway - I would look at raising the ride height a touch, as that will raise the roll centre and give you more travel to play with too. Always a compromise though... A decent book I have read (and now Prawn has it) is Tune to Win by Carroll Smith. I might have mentioned it before but it does a really good job of helping you understand the considerations of suspension design (and a few more bits too). After setting up my car(s) using the book as reference, there has been a huge difference. Something that seems common is people setting their cars up too stiff and too low believing that is fast, but in many cases it has the opposite effect... Pashley26 Posted May 23, 2013 Report Share Posted May 23, 2013 (edited) A good day indeed Went to Phils new workshop, now that he is a self employed VAG specialist he has got a proper unit to work out of I started by ripping my front bumper off, flatting it down and getting it ready for paint. Then I cleaned Ron Then Russ turned up (slowcoach) and Phil beaded his intercooler pipes after an unfortunate blowing off incident (oooo errr) Phil was doing a full service on a Passat whilst Russ put his custom intercooler back together. I offered my usual help and advise...(read, ripped his car to pieces and smoked 20 fags in two hours) I cleaned up the Passat for the customer and then Phil dropped it back, so I had a bit of time and space to have a play with my car. I'm not going to lie, I felt like I had died and gone to heaven! And with it's name badge The paint on the front bumper reacted to the lacquer and I had to wet sand it back and it was all a waste of time. HOWEVER I did polish the car to death, seal it, wax it and glaze it. Phil and I lined our gaymobiles up and took some pictures of his empire. george_seamons Posted May 23, 2013 Report Share Posted May 23, 2013 Your intercooler is waaaaaay off centre I very nearly made that mistake when I did mine, the bonnet catch support isn't in the middle of the headlights...which it looks like you have taken to be centre. Shame! You really have no luck with that bumper...maybe you should just pay to get it sprayed properly. Got to be cheaper than buying all these cans of paint! Phil's place is in a really weird area! Looks like it used to be a storage area or something for one of the other places. Maybe an area to store all the glasses, or petfood?! Still, must be pretty exciting for him though. I keep wanting to go self employed, but it still seems a bit of a dodgy time at the moment. I get a lot of private work (both electrical, and mechanical!), which gives me a lot of pocket money, but not quite enough to live off. One day soon though! Notice the right hand side silicone is thinner. Phils place used to be a part of the window makers nextdoor I think. It's a lot bigger than it looks, today we managed a diesel Passat estate, an A3 and an S3 with good space to spare. Phil was lucky because he has a huge customer base and loads of friends wanting work, what's great is that all this has cost him so far is the rent on the unit which is unbelievably cheap, his trade insurance and his public liability insurance. Oh and he bought a new trolley jack. He hasn't borrowed a penny to set it up, and all in it has cost him less than a grand to get set up. Do it George!
