But really I just want something to tinker with and make lovely, E30, 205 GTI, a special Mk2 like an Edition One or something.

You know that won't happen.

You'll spend a shit load of cash on it, then, before it starts getting good, you'll sell it. Then it'll happen all over again.

Right, but you never actually make them lovely? You always make a start, then just sell it. You might know/say otherwise, but you must be taking a hit every time?

Seems like you've plenty of resources, so if you actually committed to a car, you definitely could make it lovely.

What happened to the pop?

Still got it, it's badass. I'll never sell it, had her for 13 years in April next year.

It's been sat in my dads unit since April, went to it early this morning, put some air in one tire, pulled the starter button and away she went.

The Pop's my 'for life' car, everything else is just fun.

Jog on Haz, the S3 was lovely, my A3 was lovely. I've made loads of lovely cars.

I always get a fair market value for the cars, you can't say fairer than that. It's healthier than a lot of activities that cost the same money :P

So I've managed to go for a blast in the Eunos today, with the four new tyres - HUGE difference, it drives great :)

Despite being A rated for wet conditions, it still likes to get it's arse out... It's controllable arse out action though, which is great fun.

After Christmas it's time to fit suspension, decided to do 30mm lows just to take away the 4x4 look.

In other news, I went to Avenue Club today and got some photos of my friends NSX and a few others...

I'm not bad mouthing your cars Jardo, I actually really liked the S3. But why don't you buy a car and stick with it longer?

Dangerous territory there Mark, that pop is the be all and end all :P

George told me yesterday that gutting the pre cat gives good free gains in the CDTIs so I'm going to have fun gutting that :) Best remember to get a new mask before though... I have got the car running even better now, my work yesterday has given me an extra 5mpg over before as well as the car not noticeably smoking at all even when floored which is pretty awesome! Just the glowplugs to fit and a new cam belt+waterpump and she should be good. I am tempted to see if I can swap it for something a bit more interesting, it's a far better car than I ever thought it was but Vauxhalls really don't do it for me. I either want something small and fun or something big and barge like.

Have you ever had a good, older car? By which I mean something good but with a bit of character/history?

Dangerous territory indeed Mark :P

That car means more to me than anything in the world, it's old, it's good, it's got a lot of character and I've got a lot of history with it. My dad bought it when I was 11 for my birthday present, he paid £200 for it and we pulled it out of a barn. He got it running and taught me how to drive in it, he expected me to crash it up into things then he was going to sell it on for spares. 13 years down the line I've still got it and won't ever part with it.

Other old stuff I've had a Mk1 Fiesta with a 1300 crossflow in it, SAAB 99, Series 1 Jaguar XJ6, Ford Capri 1600 Laser, Ford Cortina 2000XL (Mk3), Mk1 Granada, SAAB 95, Jaguar XJS (V12 one), Austin Allegro SS, Rover 2200, MGB GT Jubilee, Series 2 Land Rover, BMW 635CSI Highline, three SAAB 900 turbo's, V6 Audi 80 Avant, Mk2 Golf GTI, 205 GTI, Mk2 Scirocco GT2...

It doesn't matter what it is, I'll just get bored with it and sell it/swap it. I just like buying cars, learning all about them and moving on to the next one. It's what I do. The Pop's the forever car as I said, anything else I buy I just buy to play with.

Maybe I'll spend a bit of money on the Pop instead of buying another toy.

Nah, I was just interested really. I've only ever really seen you buzzing off about your Audis, but I just find pretty much every Audi to be incredibly bland. I wasn't sure if you just ploughed money into cars and f**ked them off because you hadn't really had one that was particularly interesting or you were particularly attached to because of its character/flaws, whilst still being fun to drive fast. It seems that that isn't necessarily the case though, so there we go...

I like the Pop how it is, I like it's rattly old engine, and I like that it doesn't go anywhere in a hurry.

The body work is on the 'rotten' side of patina now, so I need to step up to it in the next year.

I've got a full interior for it, and all the clips, seals and grommets. But I thought my dad was driving it, so I'd assumed he would also be cleaning it and keeping on top of it. Mechanically he has, it drives perfectly. But he isn't really one for cosmetics...

Really it needs a full body respray, new window seals, new 1/4 panel seals, new chrome and the new interior fitting. But then it would look like every other show quality pop, and I'm not into that.

Last year my dad and I fitted an aluminium head to it, a pair of twin carbs and a tubular manifold, so it'll do 50mph now.

It's only the body that's neglected, it's a chassis underneath and the body is bolted to that. The driving and mechanics of it are faultless, but it was painted by hand thirty years ago, never lacquered or anything. If you polish it the paint comes off and it goes all faded, but if you don't polish it then it oxidises. It's just a catch 22.
