why don't they build the freewheel body into the crank arm?

other than the no-good-if-you-like-pro2 arguament why couldn't you have the inner gubbins of the freewheel machined into the crank arm itself? so you fit pawls and springs and then the outer ring onto the arm... would it provide you with more room for extra pawls/bearings etc.

i'm imaginging this as modular with all the parts vailable...

but what if the freewheel breaks? then you'd need a new crank aswell as freewheel

not if you made all the spares available like they do with an eno...

i guess the only problem would be the pawls digging into the alu body of the freewheel part of the crank...

in my brain, it should all be able to slot on, or if a groove wash machined into the crank, so you slide a ring onto the arm itself...

I'd say the problem would be the fact the lockring would have to be on the outside like when you run a Tensile so there's the danger of that unscrewing. Otherwise it's a good idea.

what do you mean outside? surely it'd be facing inwards towards the frame. and be the same as enos and such...

I'd wager machining costs would be insane enough that no-one would be willing to pay for how expensive they would be.
Also - steel pawls would decimate alloy crank arms. You'd need steel inserts (making the whole venture moot) or a steel crank arm, and no-one's going to want that extra weight.

It'd be novel, but I don't think there's any real pros whilst there's multiple cons :P
