From my personal experience and some feedback I've read on Tannus Armour:
The problem with inserts outside of the tube is that the foam gets squished into a very thin layer over time and ends up providing close to no protection. And Tannus Armor is a lot heavier than a DIY insert.

You seem to have cut a tube apart and stuck patches inside it. How, I don’t understand?!? 

I put a foam insert inside the tube to prevent snakebites. Like the ones you put in tubeless wheels.
