Insurance Not Paying Out For Stolen Bike

Well basically, Halifax are nearly at the point of refusing to pay out on my stolen bike because of the fact it's been used for comps, and in the insurance contract it does say "Does not cover bicycles used for racing", even though I've explained to them it's not racing...

I was wondering if anyone had any practical experience or advice on the matter, not just "aw m8 hope u get ur bike back innit", because if they don't pay out, chances are I probably wont bother buying one again myself...

Mike.

maybe have a look through the biketrial website and reference to them the part that states comps are not races and much more about skill than speed?

Yeah, I was thinking about asking Barbara or someone to maybe confirm to the insurers that the bike's aren't "racing" bikes...

Stupid Halifax..

Edit to person above: It is on the house insurance - it was named.

That's a bit shit, Mike. I'm sure Barbara, or any biketrial shop owner/worker, will be able to sort them out. I hope you'll be having a serious chat to your mum and dad about 'Why the f**k they have such shit house-insurers!?'.

Cheers,

Joe.

Hmmm, I think racing is defined as any competitive activity. If someone wins or loses, then it's considered a race, just with least dabs instead of shortest time. As soon as the guy saw pictures of Mike at Back Cowm, that was it.

Insurance is basically a game of 'how can I not pay you?' If you fall foul of some condition in the policy, you're screwed. It doesn't matter if it was declared or whatever, they've got you.

I must say, I don't understand why this clause exists. I know that a lot of manufacturers don't cover the warrenty on their bikes if they're used for competition, but that's because they don't want riders claiming compensation for loss of earnings or whatever if their bike breaks during an important event. If the insurance policy covers accidental damage - and I spotted recently that my HSBC insurance *specifically* states that trials riding does not count as accidental damage - then the insurer could be liable for the same kind of costs. It's not difficult to imagine if a broken bike leads to a crash and you're off work for two months, and need private medical care (say physio) then a £200 broken frame could end up costing a few thousand.

I thought you couldn't use a bike which had under 50 productions-ness for comps?

only in the nationals, and if your in any category other than masters/elite? :S as its classed as a prototype if your in those classes so is allowd

My guess is that in comps the insurance people think that other people you beat are jealous and want to steal your bike sorta thing so your kinda screwed i think, do you get what i mean, if not i will try to speak better in the morning.

D'you mean the insurance company might think that other people were given a motive to steal Mike's bike if he'd beaten them at a comp, or had shown his bike at a comp?

I think you might be onto something there Nick...

Since I've been riding "out of class", I'm not technically "in" the competition... :shifty:

But yeah, as Waddy said, it's only in the nationals, and not in Yellow route, and if you don't comply, (such as no gears, or <50 frames,) then you're just out of class. (Y)

Will phone them in't morning.
