Injury Advice

Over a year ago I fell off my bmx and tore a ligament in my ankle. I got Si to look at it and put me in a cast for 6 weeks, after that its always been back to 100%.

Just over a week ago I fell off my trials bike and folded the same ankle over exactly the same way as on my bmx. I am pretty sure the ligament isn't torn, I can feel it there, the swelling was/is nowhere near as bad plus my foot sits in its natural position when limp.

I am still worried though, its been over a week now and its still noticeably swollen and it just constantly aches! Its ok to walk and ride on, but I can't quite get the same range of movement I normally can, plus it hurts when I jump off the bike.

What are peoples thoughts? I am reluctant to go to the hospital as they did nothing last time when I tore it. Will the swelling go away soon? Is it worth getting an xray? Its getting really annoying now.

From my experience with injuries its important to let them have time to recover. I know its tempting to jump back on the bike but you might be doing more harm than good.

You did the correct thing the first time around by resting your ankle in a cast, I know you said its not as bad this time but its sounds to me that you have badly sprained it.

I know you take trials seriously i.e competitions so take your health seriously too. When I go to the Doc's I'm really pushy in the sense I want them to find out exactly whats wrong

instead of brushing me off.

I would definitely seek medical advice in your case.

Going to A&E probably isn't the right thing to do. I can tell you now that they almost certainly won't x-ray it, and they will advise rest, ibuprofen and ice for any swelling. Which isn't really that helpful. The best thing would probably to go see a sports physio or someone, but you'll probably have to pay. Maybe go and see your GP and see what he advises? Some areas have self-referral for NHS physio, but not many.

currently seeing Si Physio and he is being a great help! It turns out I have torn my ATFL, I went to the hospital and they gave me an x-ray, but there are no breaks.

Si has but me though some electrpherapy and will put me in a cast tomorrow for 6 weeks :(. Its worth it though to get properly healed.

After a week of deciding wether or not to go A n' E, I went and got told I had fractured my scaifoid for I think the third time( same wrist). I have heard this is a common injury for bikers and have been told its six weeks at least without riding :( . I was wondering if anyone had any advice for when I come back for like a support i could wear while i am riding. Also Im already bored having being in pot for only two days and was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what to do to occupy myself :giggle:

Boots tennis wrist support! I have broken my wrist about 3 times, I now need to see a specialist as it aches near constantly but ah well. 

The first time I did it I went fishing the day after the cast was put on, fell down the bank and broke the cast, they didn't give me a second one!

suport don't really work cos you bones start relying onit, i did the same thing but part of the scaifoid moved.

i had to have a pinput through it. now movement is really restricted because i relyed ona support.

my pysio said gental wrist excercise's.

best thing you can do is exorcise your wrist, really light bumbell and just rotate your wrist slowly one way then back the other.

if thats too painfull or you dont' have a bumbell.

jam jar half full of water works just as well.

question, was it you left hand?

did similar thing bout 3 weeks back, practicly bent my foot in half.

mostly soft tissue damage but doc said it should take bout 2 weeks to clear up, but then i have been riding on it.

see mine hurts to walk on but somehow ok on the bike?!?!?

when your at home (in the bath best) just move it lots, press on tiptoe for so long, wiggle your toes lots. elevate at night, which is the part that i strugle with.

it was a long time cos they took so long to oporate onit. the saifoid is the ruit for blood to your hand and were the bone moved it cut off the blood supply and my wrist started to rot basicly.

it was bout 5 months before i was on the bike properly again, but i had to have a bone graft to repair all the roten bone.

lots of milk and ibuprofen.

Broke my scaphoid just before xmas. Was in cast for 8 week! Was such a pain in the arse! I filed a little bit off the cast by the tip of my thumb cause it was digging in. Also freed my thumb up enough to play playstation lol it was taken off 3 weeks ago now and i can ride and use it normally again Tis just a bit clicky and tender still when i move it.

Right, I used to get this a tiny bit when I was younger, but then it buggered off once I quit for a few years. Now I'm back on my bike, I tend to get quite a sharp pain in the back part of my right shoulder, up towards the top (the deltoid perhaps?), mostly when I pull up and back on the bars. It's getting to the point where it's seriously impeding progress. Any ideas?

just had my little appointment with Si and I have alot more damage than I or the NHS thought.

really nice guy (bloody big bloke, missus didn't quite know what to do with herself when he came to the door.)

fair play to him for putting himself out of his way for so many people!!!

Came back from seeing Si yesterday. went to A+E again and they told me exactly the same thing.

''you've sprained your ankle and to walk onit as much as you can''

Si corrected my ankle, now in cast for 6 weeks. oh that was an experience!!!!

ANY-ONE TALKING THEIR HEALTH SERIOUSLY, SIGN UP WITH BUPA!!!

YOU CAN'T GO TOO FAR WRONG! :)

Got a really bad pain in my lower back area. First off it was just a little when riding the bike but now it seems to be there pretty much all the time. I get it when im just back hopping on the bike and its sore even when im just lazing about. It like when you see the old men struggling to bend over to pick up stuff or stand up straight once they've been sitting for a while.

Its got to the point where im acctully considering weather or not I even want to continue biking.

Is there anything i can do that could help it atall? Im not clued up on all this medical talk stuff, So if any advice could you dumb it down abit :P

Is the pain just in your back or do you get a shooting pain down your leg occasionally? That often means a slightly slipped disk (The nerves feeding the legs pass between the vertebrae, so a misalignment or damage in the spine can lead to phantom pains elsewhere).

The most likely thing to be wrong is the muscles supporting the joint between your pelvis and the bottom vertebra of your back being pulled or torn. The first thing I'd do (Provided the pain isn't too severe - if it is you need to see a physio, doctors will often just tell you to rest it and take anti-inflammatories) is try to build some flexibility into your back. Have a look for stretches for your back on the internet (There are loads - if it hurts, especially sudden sharp pain, don't do it). What you want are stretches you can control very easily such as touching your toes while sitting on the ground with your legs straight, twisting your upper body from side to side from the same position or kneeling on all fours and curving your back up and down. Once you're stretching your back regularly the pain should diminish. Do not bounce or carry momentum into a stretch, just hold it for say 5 seconds first 3 or 4 times and then for longer as the muscles warm up a bit.

The next thing to do is deal with the reason it's happened - this is likely to be due to you curving your back forward while pulling the bars back or hopping your bike. Your lower back will not carry loads well while its curved forward, so either try bending your legs more while on the back wheel to keep your lower back straight (Not really straight, a healthy lower back should curve inwards between the hips and the bottom of the rib cage) or fit a longer stem to increase the distance between the bars and pedals.

Often once you become conscious of what's causing the problem it will disappear of its own accord, but be warned that your back is pretty important, so long term pain shouldn't be ignored.

I did play about with the bar height on my bike after it got sore and for some reason when i lowered the bars by about 20mm my back felt perfectly fine then next day and the day after. But then it went back to to way it was again. Ill try doing something else with the set-up abit to see if anything will work aswel.

i'm only size 9!!! small feet for someone who's 6foot1!

don't ignor it, i've had problems with my back for years, mostly prolaps-syatic problems....but they always crop up every now and again.

check your gp...ask about exersices-streches to do before you go out riding.

harming up properly before ANY ride is really important.

Hi all,

Not an injury per se, but trying to head off some future problems with crunchy sounding knee joints. No pains from them yet, but they sound horrible.

Are there any non-prescription remedies I can begin taking or adding onto my diet with particular vitamins that may limit further damage and help maintain whatever linings in my joints to keep it from becoming a problem in the not-so-distant future?

A friend of mine is using glucosamine chondroitin for a back injury and says that's what his doc recommends to keep things in proper order as far as joints rubbing together. I will do a bit of research to learn some more about it, but wanted to get some opinions from those who may be having some of the same issues or concerns.

Thanks for any constructive input! Where's that blasted cane, anyway?

There's not really any good evidence to say that it works or doesn't work. The consensus is that it may help a bit, plus it's fairly safe to take. The only problem is that it's pretty expensive, but there aren't any other options as far as I know.

P.S. There are a hundred different types of Glucosamine on the market, with varying doses and wildly varying prices. Just get the one that works out cheapest.
