Fixed Pants™
Hey, dunno if anyone has had this idea before but i was looking at my chain earlier and it was rather loose, so i thought, lets rape that old bike in my garden for a derailleur in an attempt to give ye old chain a bit of tension...I intend to cut off the circled bit and put the hanger bit underneath the bolt on my axle adding a screw of something to it to stop it spinning.Any ideas? Am i a retard? Edited February 23, 2007 by Fat Pants

nmt_oli
Go for it, why not. If you can mount it it will work as a tensioner, a lot of stock riders use an old mech as one.Just be careful if you cut the cage in half between the two jockey wheels, you wont be able to keep both sides of the cage on the top jokey wheel, one side will spin. just bolt through the jockey wheel to the inside cage. Will become apparent when you look closer.

ManxTrialSpaz
if you ain't using chain tugs at the moment, whats to stop from moving the wheel back anyway? Yeh, but what's to stop him from just making a tensioner from an unused mech? If he wants to why not? If it works it'll be a lot easier to set tension opposed to trying to bolt up his wheel and stop it from moving at the same time, which can be tricky. Fixed Pants™
It works, sort of, the chain line needs to be sorted ideally, but i can sort it out tomorrow.Slipping back thingy - If i let it go right into the drop outs surely it's not gonna be able to slip back and lose tension? Doesn't feel very taught though. Edited February 23, 2007 by Fat Pants

Fixed Pants™
Hmm, how does that work then Mike?Mine's underneath the bolt on the outside of the drop out... Works ok i guess, better than a mega slack chain! Edited February 23, 2007 by Fat Pants
Simpson
Where the second wheel on the jocky would have been, he's put the axle through it instead and then uses the the hub and the frame to pinch the tensioner tight into position. My mate does it too. Works well and if you land on it, it just moves up and doesn't usually break.
