New Phone... Suggestions Please

I've been talking about getting a contract phone for ages so i'm finally gonna bite the bullet and do it. I was wondering what people suggestions are.

Im gonna go on Orange because my family are and it means cheap phonecalls, so basically, what phone should I look at?

I been checking out the SPV M700, because it's got GPS/WiFi/3G/etc. and looks to be a pretty good deal, and although its windows and I'm a mac geek, i've used a windows mobile phone before and was pretty happy with it!

But what do you guys recommend? I've used Nokias all my life but all the kids seem to be down with SE's these days, so gimme a hand!!

Pretty pricey though aint it?

That's another thing I failed to mention, im looking for something that will be cheap. Im probs gonna be buying a £35 contract so thats pretty much anything, but still, i think the N95 is like £80 or something stupid!!

The New Nokia N95 (unsure if that's the model or if its out yet) has a 5mp camera, swish

Yes but it still has all the image quality of a powerful wank. Still looks pretty cool. I need a new phone and I was looking at various deals but nothing is really that interesting. They all kind of have their niche, like some phones have good cameras (K800i), some are just pretty much a music player (w880i) some have good "multimedia" stuff (N73), some are kinda like a PDA and some just look pretty and do a mixture of things (that LG Prada, Samsung phones).

You just have to work out what you want I reckon. I know I would never use WiFi or 3g or GPS so I don't care about them. I'd rather have a small nice phone with a music player that's decent for those few times I'm without my iPod.

yea, got one, had it now for 2 or 3 weeks. cant really remember, apart from my initial rants about battery life, its now holding up pretty well, using it about an 30-40 minutes a day on the phone, few pics and about 20 texts a day, use its built in media player in the car going to and from work(an hour a day) and have bluetooth on 24/7, leaving the phone turned on over night i get about 3 days use out of it, cud squeeze 4 i reckon.

has built in wi-fi, 5 mega pixel camera(which is real good, for indoor shots in an average sized room the flash is more than adequate(bout 3 metres before it becomes somehwat useless).outside in day light its proper sharp as well, it aint going to replace my eos 350d, but it does stop me wanting to carry a cheapo £50 compact round with me for snap shots.

videos are 640x 480 at 25fps, meaning drunken antics are pretty clear.

so its handy for drunken clubbing pics etc.

also has gps built in, so can use it for navigating, again its by no means going to replace the tom tom, but when im out on the piss in cities i know averagely, its hugely handy, if a mate says meet me outside "xxx" or ill see you in " abc club" in 15 minutes, can just go straigh on google with it, as it has full web access. get the address of the bar in seconds. stick it into the gps, and it navigates(albeit with no voice or turn by turn, just shows a line down the streets you need to go down from your current position) to your destination, mightily handy, as its in your pocket and there for when you need it.

music players real good, screens real good, interface is good, isnt really laggy.cameras real good, price, is not soo hot.

Generally less than half that ;) And by far the best phone (feature wise) thats currently out.

EDIT: Just check the orange spv is compatible with your mac. Most phones can talk to iCal/Address book with a plist hack but it's worth checking, because I doubt those Windows phones will offer any software for getting info from your mac.

got the n95 on a £35 a month contract on t mobile, and the phone was free. admittedly its t mobile not orange, bt they should all be offering similar deals.

and tomm, you used a n95 camera, to say its total wank?

ill stick some test shots up in a minute, its more than adequate for what id need a compact cam for

£90.

& the cheapest it is on that dial-a-phone place is £74.99...

Tomm, i doubt the phone will be compatible with my Mac, but it's all good, doesnt really bother me too much. I could always buy *cough* this http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_windowsmobile.php

yea its what im on, but got the web n walk plus thing, for £7.50(5er off rrp), means i get 3gb worth of web browsing and can use my phone as a modem etc, means i can use me laptop when im working away, or in wales for the weekend on the motorbikes, tis quite useful. still to see wether i can set it up to play xbox live on though, as that would rock my socks

Until phones approach the quality of *any* cheap digital camera, I will say they are wank. Fair enough they're passable for taking pictures of your mates on a night out, but for anything more they're toss. I've got a 6 year old, dirt cheap 2MP digital camera that takes better photos than any phone, which is pretty rubbish. It doesn't even have autofocus but it's still loads better than any phone camera. Why the hell can't they just put decent cameras in them.

Rant over.

You can get any phone (just about) to sync with a mac via bluetooth, as long as the hacks are available. Apple do update isync every now and again to add recent phones, but it's always a few months after they come out. So you need the hacks. My w810i works fine :)

I managed to *cough*acquire*cough* a copy of the missing sync, so i'm all ready to go. I would go for the N95 but my boss has one and I dunno... i've got my ipods for music, plus the SPV can do music anyway with a microsd card... i dunno, i never find myself using my camera. i mean i think it might be kinda cool to have the nokia... i guess ill have a look tomorrow. my friend works in the shop anyway so i might be able to get some kinda deal. the reason im interested in the SPV is cos its free, and has gps, so i can geo-tag my photos easier by taking a shot with my phone in the location that i shoot my pics, then i can geo-tag more accurately than i do already. I know the N95 has GPS, but unless I can get one for free, i'm not interested :P

Before you get a PDA, check out it's general performance and don't go by figures because they don't mean anything. I've got a Qtek 9000 (supposedly 520mhz) and it takes a good 5 seconds to answer a call, it's slow with texts and in general it takes ages to load anything. So as a phone, it's utterly useless but in other aspects it's a great thing to have. And if you intend to play videos, go for a 320x240 screen. Very few PDA's can actually cope with VGA video, so the higher the resolution of the screen, the worse the performance will be. Pictures look good in QVGA, having VGA in such a small screen is comparable to a 12" HD monitor - so it's pretty pointless.

yeah i'll have a go with it tomorrow before i buy it for sure, as long as they have one in stock!! it's got a 240x320 screen which is cool, i cant see myself watching that many vids on it but i can see where youre coming from. from what i've read about it people seem to think very highly of it, even the girl that works in the shop said it was nice so... i'll see what i can do :) thanks for the advice though guys, much appreciated!!

For overall functionality, I really can'y say a bad thing about the K800i, everything on it seems to have been thought out, making it really easy to use. Syncs with my mac fine, picture quality from it isn't too bad, auto-focus, flash, different picture modes, multiple (customisable) alarms - very useful I've found. Get a 2gb M2 card for it and you're pretty much set. The battery life is great too, as is the screen. Plus it's 3G if that's your bag.

Admittedly, before this I had always been a Nokia guy. With an oldish Nokia 7270 (I think that was the model name) so I guess any phone would seem to be amazing but this is still a very decent phone! And it's not hard to convert to. The only thing I had a bit of a niggle with was having '#' as the space key instead of '0'. I'm suprised that you can't customise that on phones to whichever button setup you want.

Oh, and James Bond had one - don't forget that ;)

fair enough, its your opinion, and its what it counts for, but, and its a big but, my mums go a supposedly 6.6mpixel compact, and my camera phone knocks the living daylights out of it, also pretty sure it beats me old olympus compact which i had for skiing 2 years ago. my mates also bought a £30 3 mpixel vivitar camera from morrisons, again the camera on my phone is way better, flash is a bit worse, but as i say, it more than replaces the need for a compact cam in my life. i have no interest in taking semi good pics with a compact, there either there to store information, take a picture of something whacky, or a drunk distraction.

as i say, sample shots from my camera up, when i can be arsed to upload em, which shouldnt be too long really. boom done, first picture i took outside with my camera, resized for web use, also ignore the softness to the right of the pic, thats just where id put a heffing great finger print on the edge of the lens

yea its not brilliant, but seen many worse photos took with compacts

 I would love to see the images your basing this on ;)

k800i

Taken through car window travelling at 10-15 mph.

dsc00670kg5.th.jpg

Taken at bracken using bestpic mode (cam quality is reduced using bestpic.... not full capability ;))

dsc00762gf6.th.jpg

Use of the macro mode for a stylish, clear foreground, blurred background type image.

My mums 5MP minolta camera takes pics of the same quality. And that was a £200 camera about 2 years ago.

EDIT: MonsterJ, why are you going with orange when companies like o2 do large anytime any network packages?

Because I know/used to f**k a girl who works in the Orange shop and she might be able to wangle me a killer deal. Plus the rest of my family are on orange, so are most of my friends so I figured I might as well!

Thing is, I'm used to taking pics with my DSLR, so a phone cam is kinda useless to me. Even the novelty of "pics while drunk" doesnt apply because I dont drink :P

Thats exactly what i said before i got mine, apart from the whole not drinking bit :S. I've taken 1000's of photo's on it, from quick snaps of notes on uni message boards to getting pics while out on "a quick ride". It gets used because i have it, not that i have it because it gets used.

Haha that's cool. We'll pretty much every phone has a camera these days, so we'll see. I think I'm pretty much set on the SPV M700 to be honest, it's got nothing but good reviews and I know my boss has had problems with his N95 which has put me off one a bit. But I dunno yet!

Sounds like a good phone that one ;)
