basher
You can have a steel insert put in as i dont think its possible to helicoil them but i dont think its cheap to get a insert put in i think its around 50 squids. Dont no who does it though sorry but im sure someone will.

Greetings
Ive seen an add on the net for the metal insert just cant remember whereIt would have to be really thin because there's not much metal around the bb.
NileBrownâ„¢
I had this problem, buy a decent bb that you can expect to last a long time and wrap it in loads of PTFE tape. Then re insert it back it and secure it all up with some loctite. But make sure you understand that once its in, it may be a bit hard to get out becaue of the glue! Ive done this method and has been fine ever since.
James Quigley
I may be wrong but if you're using a square taper BB you can get BB's where the non-drive side cup screws to the BB shell(i.e. the driveside) thus eliminating the need for BB threads in your frame. guineasmithpig
if the threads are stripped, then there is no metal to re-cut the threads into. thread chasing tools are only designed to tidy paint and debris from threads, or fix a bent thread at the very outside of the shell.you can get threadless bb's, but i'd be dubious about the integrity of the bearings and axles. waynio was saying that everyone he's fitted (to normal bikes, not just trials bikes) has died pretty quicklyalternatively, there's two rethreading methods i know of. having the bb shell reamed out and a sleeve sweated in, into which NEW bb threads are cut. or (apparently, never seen it done) there is a different bb size known as an 'italian' bb thread. at aguess it comes from old road bike sizes or something. the bb shell is reamed out, and rethreaded to this slightly larger size. i had a sleeve fitted in an old dj frame a few years back, and it cost me about £40, and was offered the italian job (haha) at the time as well. having a sleeve fitted is the best option, as they use a steel sleeve, giving stronger threads than soft shitty aluminium ones we all keep killing BE WARNED: warlands cycles in oxford told me one of their staff had a frame done in this way by Argos cycles, who charged them over £100 for it?! dunno if this is the going rate these days, but mine cost me £40 done by George Longstaff Cycles in Chesterton, near Newcastle-under-Lymesmithy
Anodised Adamant
RE TAP it may work depends if there is any threads left at all HALFORDS
Gaz M
dont take it out cause if you do itll be f**ked just leave it and ride it as it is instead of risking not being able to ride at all youthh

RobinJI
17th option down in "braze on parts" - 55 quid (Argos Racing Cycles)That's the only place I know of who will ream and sleeve BB threads, although obviously other places do it.Other options are basically a thread-less BB, which apparently suck balls, or buying a decent BB you know will last, and gluing it in. 26inch
Helicoiling wont work. If re tapping the threads dont work argos cycles of bristol will put an new insert in (if theyre still around) seem to remeber it costs around £50 as my freind had it done. Phill_Monks
ah i see.....rite ill have to go down to halfords then... thanks everyone
Gaz M
I'm sure you cant just re-tap bb threads. If it was that simple then nobody would care about stripping their bb. Halfords can clean up the threads abit if they're just abit dodgy, but when its well and truly stripped there hardly anything you can do. RobinJI
Yeah, as said, halfords will only be able to clean out the threads, they can't replace them if they're stripped.Haha, woo, I'm now official halfords staff now, applied last Sunday, interview Wednesday, got told I had he job on Friday, got my induction tomorrow. haha, easiest quickest job I've ever tried for! Lame, gotta stop calling them hell-frauds now! Doesn't seem a bad place to work though.
