It's not a small amount of rolling resistance though, a minion is a fat sluggish heavy dh tyre, a street tyre rolls much faster and smoother and weighs a lot less. You can't really compare puncture resistance if you're using a 1200g tractor tyre on a 48mm wide rim.

I'm not using a 48mm rim, I've got a 28mm rim on my Hex and am running a Minion on the back, dare I say in the super tacky compound! I honestly don't find it an issue at all and can easily get enough speed for manuals and bunnyhops etc. Obviously a street tyre would roll even better, but for me puncture resistance is more important and worth the trade off in rolling resistance.

I've not tried those tractor tyres, are they any good?

We also don't really have a choice. And having had the Conti and the Holy roller in my hands side by side I can say that you notice the stronger side walls of the Conti a lot even though it's not much heavier.

Sounds like it could be worth trying them out then if they are better constructed. That and a mixture of more air and riding smoother! I ride with Dave quite a bit and a lot of our rides have been cut short or don't even start because of his punctures, hopefully he can sort it out!

I wouldn't want to run a 24'' Maxxis on a street trials bike. And there's not much of a weight difference between 24'' and 26''. In fact, the Maxxis Minion 24'' weighs about 1200gr.

Yeah, not ideal really, but if it was me I would sacrifice a small amount of extra rolling resistance for a far more durable tyre.

They are missing a trick not making any 24" dual plys!

Are the continental heavy? Looking at the tubes Dman posted above and what topsy says above, downhill tubes are just under 0.5 kilo a tube (how thick are those things!? I bet I could ride them without a tyre!) If the continental were say 0.5 kilo a tyre I'd really be starting to jack up the weight of the bike.

I may try new tyres first then change tubes if still getting punctures. Still not sure on the continental tyres yet, want to see if I can find any Odyssey tyres and compare the two before buying.....

Looking at the weight of the Contis (816g) vs Holy Rollers (778g) I doubt there is going to be much of a difference in pinch puncture resistance, it's the weight of a chocolate bar! Reckon you should get a dual-ply if you can find one weighing around 1000g, my 26" Maxxis tyres weigh about 1200g and I've very rarely punctured them, even denting the rim quite badly without puncturing during mtb/trials use.

In my experience of riding trials and mtb and running £3 tubes it is the tyre that makes the biggest difference. You don't want to be puncturing £5+ tubes all the time.

Looks like you have terrible choice in 24" tyres. Those Contis look very expensive and think it's the extra grip from the compound that you are paying for, not extra sidewall thickness, though I've never seen them so am just guessing really!

What about cutting up some old tubes (I know you have plenty of them ;) ) and reinforcing the sidewalls by gluing them on?! That's what I would try!

Or run your tyre at a crazy psi, making your bike feel horrendous at the same time, and try and ride smoother....know it's hard when learning though.

  4. Yeah some of the spots were pretty slick weren't they....hopefully it will be dry next time.

Cheers Luke, was good to meet you all as well. Always interesting to see everyone's different approaches to obstacles, some cool moves were had by all! Liking your effortless big moves and spins!

Yep I'm free that weekend so sure I will be doing some riding somewhere....

  6. I'm 30 and been riding trials off and on since I was 16, I still love it as much as I did back then, try and get out once or twice a week.

Not riding at the moment due to a badly broken foot in November (Mountain biking injury), think I will need a year to get back to riding properly, can't wait!

As long as your still enjoying it keep riding!

  7. Nice video, some of the locations looked decent! Was that all in Burrs Park then?

Have to ride with you in Manchester soon, but I'm recovering from a broken foot at the moment....

  8. That sucks, I had a Lisfranc fracture a few years ago but fortunately I didn't need any surgery.

That still took a while to recover from, nearly a year to get pain free and riding good again, just be patient and take the advice youre given (I was a bit lazy with my physio).

Oh right well that is encouraging if you had a similar injury and have been able to recover from it, from your last few videos it doesn't look like it holds you back at all!! I guess you can feel that it's still not perfect though?
Theres hope for me yet then, I don't quite ride to the same standard so hope to be hopping up kerbs in a few months. Will be patient and looking forward to starting physio.

That drop looked like a sickener!

Yeah. I shattered my heel in March 2013 on the trials bike, I was 8 weeks in a pot and 4 weeks in a moonboot. My shinbone went through my heel, due to the force from above, tore a load of tendons, I was off the bike for ages. I still get twinges of pain now and again, but that's what happens when you break a bone, it's never really right again because of the soft tissue damge

That sounds nasty, was that a big drop that went wrong then?

Yeah I accept its never going to be perfect again but hopefully it heals well enough....bring on the moon boot!

  9. Hey, just thought I'd share my story so far, I've got a lot of time on my hands at the moment!

I broke my foot at the beginning of November, it was on my mountain bike when I went off a jump/drop and messed up the landing. I went off it to slow and instead of landing nicely on the downslope I didn't clear it and landed on the back end of it, resulting in a pretty big impact with my feet still on the pedals.

So I went to the hospital that evening and they told me after x-rays that I had a Lisfranc Fracture/Dislocation which would need surgery to correct and then a fairly lengthy recovery. Gutted. I had a couple of breaks at the joint of my 1st/2nd metatarsals and the ligament that normally holds them together had broken when they were forced apart. For anyone that follows the DH MTB its a very similar injury to what Josh Bryceland did in september at the World Championships, he has a Lisfranc Fracture as well. Check out the end of this vid:

So I had the surgery and got a couple of screws and a plate put in to hold it all together while it heals, heres some pics:

They were taken a couple of weeks after the surgery before I had the stitches taken out. I'm now nearly 6 weeks post-op and will be out of the cast on Xmas eve, moving into a supportive boot for the next few months. It's going to be quite a long recovery, from all I've read about it takes about 6months - 1yr to recover and regain most of the function/strength. I'm really missing riding so much and can't wait to get back into Trials/MTB again. It's so annoying, the day before I did it I got a big order from Tarty and built up a new front end with new disc brake, forks, front wheel etc and I've not even tried it out yet!!

Anyway has anyone else on here done anything similar, any broken feet/ankles/leg stories and how was your recovery?! It would be great to hear some success stories!

  10. I ride these spots fairly regularly but not seen any other riders. Would be good to get a group ride going.
Its pretty good around there, nice and quiet and never had any trouble from people.

Theres a couple of other decent little spots around there as well....

And also along Great Ancoats St near the Domino's Pizza/Costa Coffee (might be another chain, cant remember!) there are a load of concrete blocks and walls around the corner. The Google Earth pictures are old so just show a building site.
