  1. That was a fricken steal for £50 :o! I wouldnt personally like to ride one of these, but for £50 can you go wrong?

    Well, £50 plus what the maggies cost me, and the odd bits I got for them like some ali bolts as some were missing/useless, had to get pads as someone let me down on those, seatpost and saddle etc (for trips to work/uni) cost a bomb because of the odd size, had to source a clamp and a piece of tube to make one. Add it up and it starts to make less sense really, but then there would have been costs on top of any bike I got 2nd hand so it's swings and roundabouts.

    to be honest just as a commuting thing for £50 it's pretty decent, lighter than anything else you'd pick up on ebay etc, stronger and probably more reliable. The fact it's light enough and almost purposeful enough to be a decent trials frame is a bonus.

    I agree, the decals/stickers/whatever you want to call them are too much, would look ok plain white... But stripping it down and painting is a bit too much effort/cost atm, see if I like it first :P

  3. Whats happened to the pricing on the website? How come all the prices have changed to like £17.88 and stuff? Is that because of the VAT increase, where literally the added VAT has been added to the original price giving a strange amount :S?

    That'll be it, will be happening all over the country, no way retailers are gonna take a profit hit, remember their profit is only part of the cost of the item, so any hit to their profits will be larger than the 2.5% from VAT increase if they don't pass it on to customers.

  4. strain (stretch)=Stress/youngs modulus, as a percentage

    So as far as breakage goes length is irrelevant, however shorter piece of metal individually will stretch less as the percentage of their original length is smaller, as a chain it will be just as bad though as it is the same length. If not worse actually as the pins act as stress concentrators and having more of them, and I assume half the size, will actually quadruple the stress in a similar sized chain link IIRC (it should be somewhere near quadrupled anyway, the actual stress is obtained via an ESDU chart and not calculated but it is an exponential shaped plot for plate with a hole)

  5. to be honest its a bit too new for me as lots of things i want to do the parts are not there! its all custom and that means expensive! oh well i treated it to some 650GBP coilovers the other week but now its chewed up its clutch and front tyres lol, gratefull for its treat i guess.....

    I have the same issue with parts but for the opposite reason age wise, as in the parts are *no longer* there :P I just like the more retro stuff, the dream project is an Opel Manta A with an RB25/26 stuffed in the front :) that's 70-75, and I currently own a Nova runaround and track car project at 93 (facelift as of 90 though) and 88 (originally around in 85ish) respectively, so that should put into perspective what too new is :lol:

    On topic though; ebay is definitely your best bet for really cheap starting bikes, if it's not full suspension and dual disc the masses don't wanna know, so trials bikes which are only just trials bikes tend to go for <200, I got mine for £50, spent 70 on some HS33's and way more than I needed to on other odd bits, but it could have been working fine for £140ish!

  6. highly modified Colt CZT 1.5 turbo currently around 240 bhp. from the stock 150bhp.

    probably looking at 2nd hand at 1st to be honest once i start getting better look at newer bikes?

    as for validating i assume i await a mod/admin to do this?

    Too new for me really :P

    Validation is done by full members submitting votes on your posts, but a similar thing.

  7. Normally find loads of onza woodstocks on ebay, cheap and cheerful and come with a seat tube, looked at a few before I got my mission reefer (and had it been the same price I would have got the woodstock as they look far better)

    edit: Also what do you drive etc, also a lover of those 2 special letters that denote that fantastic black and grey material :lol:

  8. My fave clamps are either Magura's own ones, or the Echo SL (the cnc washer works really well)

    Can you use the metal washers in the normal maggie clamps or have Echo been clever about it and made them a different radius?

  9. Think the main thing bringing it down is the graphics to be honest, clean white would look pretty cool and the graphics look cheap and horrible, was going to rip them all off soon as I got it but they're either lacquered over or painted on!

  10. Thought I'd beat the xmas day/soonest delivery date after crew and stick this in since I'm done spending too much money now :P Nothing amazing or even new I know but thought a few might be interested :)

    Picked up this on ebay recently as I've been after a trials bike for a while since finding a BMX too cramped to be comfortable with spec now is:

    Standard bits:

    Alex DX32 Rear rim, DX24 front

    Mission hubs/chainline/gearing

    Mission Stem

    FSA Pig Headset

    Kenda Kinetics tyres

    Bits I've added:

    Try all Loc-all grips

    Onza carbon bars

    HS33 front and rear

    Random front pads cam with the HS33 I got, smooth rim for a bit of modulation

    TNN LGM's on what I think is a medium grind on the back

    Speedrace single cage pedals

    Tartybikes chainstay protector (Mandatory equipment I think??)

    Comfy looking white seat from Halfrauds, which is a san marco ponza power apparently!

    Seat is just sat there for now until I get a seat post, which is being a pain as it's 22.2mm! Only thing I've found is a Haro BMX seatpost on ebay that will fit, NOS from the 80's! Unless I go for a stumpy pivotal style seat, which is gonna be uncomfortable to ride when I need it.

    Gonna be used to save a bit of money on the commute to work and hopefully have a bit of fun chucking it about :) (Quick release seat for dual purpose planned!)

  11. What the mother in epicness is a carcinogen

    Every substance in the world ever basically, occasionally the flavour of the month carcinogen gets some bad press and people decide to get scared about it. Bearing in mind you can't do a 5 minute test of flicking it on someone and going "ooh yep, they just got cancer" unsurprisingly yes there's something of a correlation between cancer cases and people that spend a lot of time around/covered in crude oil/oil products.

    And actually the most commonly found carcinogen is probably living material, being carbon based and therefore radioactive (this is how carbon dating works) it is also a carcinogen, and since there's more living things in the world than smokers... :P

  12. Wind the TPA in a bit, set your brake up square against the rim. Wind tpa out. Win?

    Set one side up against the rim, push piston back in on one side, forcing the other out, wind TPA out and find you have no gap on one side and 3mm on the other :P

I found the same today setting up my pads, due to the rings on the slaves and the maggie plastic washers, I just found trial and error the best way, took hours to get something acceptable though and even then they were too far from the rim, lots of TPA adjustment isn't ideal really, it was either that or let them rub and wait for them to wear in though. Way I got them close enough was to set it up butting against the rim and then pull the lever with the screws nipped up gently, to slide it out a tad, too much though and it will just click onto the next ring on the slave.

  14. as someone already said, it has vertical dropouts, so that's not an option.

    Personally, I would be filing the magura mount slots a bit bigger and possibly a bit off the frame mounts to allow a bit more vertical movement of the clamps.

    This was probably my next option, however it seems they're set up fine now, only thing I can think of is the burrs on the magura mounts got in the way where they've been squashed a bit (This pair of mounts arrived with a bolt about 25mm too long with an M6 lock nut rammed on to space it out :rolleyes:). The head of the screw seemed to be squashed against the mount though, very odd!! Just need my M5 bolts to arrive from tarty and I can have a mess about on it now :)

    Also, has vertical dropouts as Ali says, so no chain issues and it is indeed aluminium alloy.

  15. Fancy grabbing an end on shot so we can see the angle a little clearer? If it's not too severe then you'll get away with filing the pads to make a better angle but it looks to be pretty brutal :P

    Yeah the angle was pretty shocking, like 3-4mm gap at the top... however I went to take the pic you asked for, and they're set up almost square, can get a fingernail between the rim and the pad and obviously stuff will bend/twist etc more than that so I don't see it being a major issue! Very weird how it's done that though, and as far as I can see the magura mounts are symmetrical? :blink:

  16. I assume you noticed only half the pad is touching the rim? :blink: That's only £15 worth of £30 pads! :P

    edit: just noticed it may look like there is a gap there and the angle making it look square, theres no gap at all, thats with the pad against the rim.

    to be honest it looks to me that even with the slave cylinder up against the bare mounts+ a bit of height it only just sits square so I'm not sure sure if new mounts would sort it. Also, standard frame on what is as far as I know standard wheels, at the very least standard size, on vertical drop outs, sat in the frame where it was with the Vee setup (evo mounts) should sit square surely! I just cant see where it's going wrong.

  18. Mission reefer 26" this would be the first time it seen maggies, but have seen them on the same frame, and if it has 4 bolt mounts they should fit surely!

    Vertical drop outs and a derailleur etc, so no issues on the chainline putting it out. Wheel is definitely 26" not a 27" wheel or anything weird like that, but you can actually see the mounts seem to be slightly too far down the chainstays? Is very odd indeed!
