Nut type axles will usually be stronger (since they'll be steel) but appear on cheaper, heavier hubs, particularly with cup and cone bearings. Allen screw hubs will be lighter and generally nicer to work with as you only need an allen key rather than big ol' spanners.

yeah, but it really depends upon the hubs. Hence why i didn't say 'always'. I now have a 9mm solid axle on the hub i was talking about before.

Suppose it depends on your setup really. I found with my onza hub's allen key axle that it couldn't hold the front wheel still with a 160mm disk and 6 piston clim8 caliper (overkill brakes though). The alloy cup that clamped onto the fork was deforming and letting the wheel slip out of the forks under full braking for me. However, I've never ever had any issues with them on other bikes in the past using any other disk/rim brake systems
. Even if you do ever have issues with one or the other, you'll find you can almost certainly swap and change between axle types very easily for only a few £/$.

I can't remember the last time I didn't get hassled when out on my bike. I am the only trials rider in my town and a lot of people give the usual wide comments, probably because I'm the odd one out really. I've had stuff thrown at me to try and knock me off, people shouting out offensive comments and even some attacking me. It's so bad I barely go out on my trial bike anymore.
Last time I was out some teenage kid threw at bottle that hit me when I was pushing the bike home and then him and his 4 mates tried to steal my bike from me, that was on a Tuesday night about 2 months ago. All of the above totally unprovoked. I am one of those people who will ignore provocation as much as possible to keep the peace and will not consciously bother anyone.

As I haven't rode a "proper" trials bike in years, I don't get many, but on my MTB I did get a funny / annoying one a month or so back.
A woman and man were crossing in front of me, I could see their kids would probably do the same after so I slowed down in anticipation of it. As predicted, the kids ran in front at the last minute but I was easily able to stop (Was probably doing less than 10). So, I virtually ground to a halt as they crossed, thinking nothing more of it.
Then the guy comes up to me and shouts: "THERE'S A ROAD THERE!", pointing to the road. I simply replied with "Yes, there is, but this is a cycle lane?" in a genuine confused tone, not trying to provoke anything to which he replies: "YOU WANT A f**kIN SMACK?". Er, no I don't really mate, I just want to carry on along the seafront as I was... And also I'm not sure your 5 year old kids would want to see you smacking an innocent cyclist for no reason.
I didn't make a fuss about slowing down or anything so I really don't know where the aggression came from.
That guy sounds like a complete knob, what happened after that?
A lot of people are the same here, so i just keep my mouth shut and pretend i didnt hear anything. Only answer back if the person genuinely seems interested rather than just wanting to take the piss, which is quite rare here.

I luckily don't get asked many questions, just get a lot of people talking behind my back thinking I can't hear them.. Elderly women usually are pretty disgusted if I ride around on benches (whereas the little children are totally ok, also if the make the bench dirtier than me..) and elderly men seem genuinely interested and fascinated.
Yeah same. I don't tend to speak back to people, Thats just what i was thinking. I never actually said that, i just pretend i never heard anything and keep silent.
It must be an elderly man thing, had some old dude speaking with me for ages outside sainsbury's whilst i waited for my mate to come out. He seemed fairly knowledgeable. I thought it was kinda cool

i've bled it according to the hope guide and rolled on the diaphragm etc, i thought it was pretty good but i may get tarty's to do it soon.
anther problem i have is that the mount has been faced and i dont think its 100% straight, when its all bolted on the caliper will pull the rotor away from the wheel (bending it) so ive had to stick some spacers in to move the caliper in to the wheel a little, the rotor is pretty well in between the pads etc.
i guess it must be the bleed, the brake holds the wheel very well, its just the lever has to come in a long way before it grabs it.
Sorry seems i misunderstood before. I agree with you, it seems like the bleed maybe there is air in the pipe or not enough fluid.

There's a lot of big lads who run Monos of all types and have no problems - your setup is to blame and not the amount of pistons. Those are pretty small rotors for a big guy I'd say...
Yeah probably was the rotors size, I didnt want to risk using larger rotor's for fear of bending under backward braking. Same setup with the clim8's works perfect for me on my mod and the mono's have no issue on my (now sold) 4x bike and 203mm rotors.
Anyway, i feel as though i've been misunderstood. I never said get different calipers or advised he do that. I merely voiced my opinion on the matter and gave my past experiences with correctly bled and set 2 piston brakes with small assed disks. Quoting myself ---> "2 pistons seemed a bit too weak to me on small rotors."

NO. You don't need a 4-6 piston brake on a trials bike, let alone a mod. Mono trials can be a little temperamental, really sensitive to bleed and set up. So if not perfect they can feel poo.
Get it bled really well, spend some decent time making sure everything is square and spaced out correctly. It won't help that you've got that +20 adaptor on there. If it still feels squishy and poo it may need new seals all round.
My Hope Mono mini's (not Mono Trial) kept slipping at inopportune times with red high friction pads... F.160mm R.140mm with no adapters. Then again i am a big lad. :$

I get "where is his seat?" and strange looks a lot. People who stare and wonder "wtf" at my lack of seat or maybe at the fact I'm a 6ft tall man on a small (mod) bike. I ride the only mod trial bike in this town and i've only ever seen 1 mtb'r with a stock going about.
Actually, on Monday I had a good one....Rode past a primary school where they were having 'bike lessons' and got laughed at by a load of girls. Then I heard the so called 'expert' instructor saying to the girls that it was both stupid and dangerous to ride a bike without a seat...Trail bike....Moron

all im waiting for now is a rotor and the front brake.
the front is also a hope mono trial, braided hose, red reservoir cap, red lever, black caliper pot and mono trial 160 rotor.

I mind you mentioning the weakness of the back brake, have you thought about getting stronger calipers? Maybe 4 or 6 piston? 2 pistons seemed a bit too weak to me on small rotors. Suppose its because there is less torque due to the size of the rotor and the braking surface being closer to the hub. I ended up putting the 6 piston clim8's off my old 4x bike onto my mod. i've never had brake slip since then, both wheels lock with the slightest pull of the levers despite the pads being worn to hell. Fyi, EBC Brakes still do pads for them. Of course here are newer 6 piston calipers available or even 4 pistons will be an improvement.

I think it looks good with the stickers. Stops the bike just looking like a plain respray and the stickers co~ordinate with the other colours of the whole bike. They don't look out of place to me, but then again it's not my bike and all that matters is what your happy with mate.

Sorry, had to rush for the bus and didnt answer everything you asked. The 140mm disk on the back is ok. It hasn't crunched up or buckled under backward braking so far, which is what I would have expected. The disk itself is just a cheapy one from ebay, around £6. i'd still rather have a rim brake on the rear since I've banged the disk more than a couple of times, but it's not actually that bad. Both brakes are stupidly powerful with the 6 piston calipers, you literally can't feather them.

Very nice! One thing though, are you not using a starnut and topcap? And what's the 140mm rotor like on the back?
Nah, it's was a feeble attempt to save a little weight but the starnut is so light it barely makes a difference. Once the forks, headset and stem are pulled tight buy the starnut...it's not really needed, provided that your stem is on tight enough and there is no grease or crap on the steerer where the stem attaches

Thanks for the pointer. I definitely learnt my lesson with the rims. I bought them several months back, before his site went down and i knew any better. They advertised free postage in mainland UK so i got charged £5 for postage automatically and completely ignored when i emailed about that. Done a little search of the website and found these forums i think, with people basically saying they either never got or got something else or item was burst. When the rims finally arrived wrapped in bubble wrap about 2 weeks after i ordered, they were both basically shaped like a pringle crisp and the rear one scratched deeply on one side. The bubble wrap was undamaged, none of the bubbles burst so it clearly wasn't done in transit. However, being a wheel builder i knew the rims were ok to be built and would straighten out just fine. I'm extremely glad i actually got them at all, I spent two weeks waiting and thinking i was never going to get and that i'd need to get the bank on their case. I'll certainly never buy from their again.

Yeah, i've seen those. What are they like to ride with? I think (but don't really know) the bike will have a tendency to roll to one side landing on ledges and stuff. I'm actually saving my pennies for Echo SL 09 cranks and will certainly consider a Bashring. The Bashplate is just awful, it's almost like it's made of cardboard and I can't seem to find a replacement that will fit my frame anywhere either.

I'm from Hawick. I think i've seen one 24" trials rider that never goes out biking, but aside from that it's just me in this town.

I'm a relatively new Trials rider with more than 10 years bmx street/dirt riding experience. Spent the last 4 years being a lazy git and I now have the gut to show for it. When i was up at Fort William DH 2010, I saw several trials riders hoping across a rock course behind the massive TV. That + Destroyed Local Skatepark + Local Council that has a bulldozer obsession lead to me building this Trial Bike and starting the sport of kings. I honestly can't believe I wasted 10 years of my life bmxing. I now find that everywhere is a riding spot.
Anyway, just wanted to see what you guys thought of my first mod.
Hand built 19" rear wheel with 'Brand New' Zhi ?? rim that arrived stupidly scratched and somewhat bent out of shape (all true now) from www.trials-uk.co.uk, 175mm anodized red spokes, Onza Sealed Bearing RHub, 16t 4pull generic freewheel, generic 140mm disk, 2.5" Maxxis Creepy Crawler and Clarks Clim8 six-piston hydraulic brake caliper.
Hand built 20" front wheel with 'Brand New' Zhi?? that arrived somewhat bent out of shape (all true now) from www.trials-uk.co.uk, 190mm old assed black spokes from my old bmx wheel (if you know of where I can get 190mm anodized red, please post), Onza Sealed bearing FHub with 10mm Hollow Axle, generic 160mm disk, mega old 2.215" Maxxis Daddy (off my old bmx front wheel) and Clarks Clim8 six-piston hydraulic brake caliper.

Thing has been bent out of shape soooo many times (anyone know of a Bplate that can fit this frames weird assed mounts? Echo Sl guard looks pretty close but cant get measurements to check from online.)

I never said i couldn't defend myself, i was trying to get across that people around here will start stuff without provocation. i am not the only one who gets this off them, the whole biking scene is pretty much dead now here because these a..holes want to wreck the riding spots and assault everyone who isn't inbred
