  1. Does this thing have a proper name? As described to me:

the bumpers come off, then a cross piece is bolted in their place front and rear.

They have a bit sticking out of the centre which fits into these things and allows you to turn the car upside down to work conveniently on the bottom.

I haven't got a picture of that but you can try and imagine it with this random car and the pieces where they are supposed to be.

I never imagined a car being worked on like that.... is someone having me on?

PS [edit] I imagine some sort of lift to put it in place. If anyone has a picture of an upside down car in one of this sort of thing I would love to see it.

  2. I have a TRV-310E - I think - which is very similar. You learn to love the zoom because modern camcorders seem to top out about 10x.

My only problem is that I have to keep the thing now if I ever want to view what is on the tapes unless I find them all and move them onto DVD or DV tape. I wasn't a "shoot it, transfer it immediately and record over" user.

The main thing I'm wondering is: are you sure it does 16:9 widescreen?

Also, it may be one fromt he time when a camcorder with digital in AND digital out was taxed more than a camcorder with just digital out, so a lot of camcorders just had digital out. Mine does. This is only important if you want to export it, edit it and put the edited result back on your tape.

When you're buying tapes, if you buy Hi8 the 60 minute ones only last 45 minutes in a D8 camcorder. Get Digital8 ones unless you're OK with that.

The ten hour battery is excellent. You'd be using the eyepiece for that length of time. If you used the screen it'd be 2-3 hours

So, just a few things to think about

  3. I recently got a Samsung 815 Pro for just over 300 quid. 15x zoom and 8MP. You don't need a changeable lens with that. It's a good lens but the camera as a whole is VERY BIG. I'm still learning the fine points, though. I got it from a local shop second hand but there are some on Ebay. About the only downside I haven't been bothered to look at the manual for an answer to is that it only films for 30 seconds max. My wife's dinky Digimax will film forever, up to the limit of the card, if you let it. The 2GB card on her camera probably means a few days of film. It's not bad quality either, for what it is.

Only other observation: get a camera that films AVI, not MOV like my last camera. MOV is crap. In my opinion.

  4. Have fun.

Last five years top 100 boys names

Last five years top 100 girls names

and from 1960 onwards so you can check out the old top tens

It changes after a few seconds to some Amazon page but you hit the back button to have a look.

There are some names that have completely slipped off the list in recent years (Philip/David/Andrew/Mark?).

I'm not sure what happened about 20 years ago but these days every third 20 year old male seems to be called Ryan.

Try not to pick something that will make people think you hated the child from the off.

And nothing in the top twenty either.

My unhelpful offering for the day...

  5. I have a Transcend 150x 2gb SD card for my camera, bought from http://www.offtek.co.uk and the only problem I have with it is that there is TOO MUCH room, for a camera. I don't often empty my card, but now when it comes to that point I have 2GB to think of... I don't know of this will bother you.

I've not had any problems with that brand so far (but I have only bought five of the cards)

  6. In windows explorer, you first need the detail view (view-> details in the menu at the top)

The top bar gives the things you said (title, etc) but you can add some by right clicking on title (or whatever) and picking some more. You might need to go to more options at the bottom, but it's then possible to pick modified, created and others and once these are added to the bars at the top, you can click on it and it will sort them in that order.

If that's not clear, I'll try again if you let me know.

  7. Your hard drive could do that if it was overheating.

I had one like that once. It would start fine but eventually when it got busy the drive would stop, and explorer, which seems to keep reading stuff off the hard drive, would pack up and the computer would freeze, couldn't move the mouse and no response. Happened at random intervals after the PC was started.

Is yours anything like that? It restarts after shut down for a while then packs up again.

  8. I wondered what looked wrong with this. Just to show that the English language can be very confusing:

    horde Pronunciation (hôrd, hrd)

    n.

    1. A large group or crowd; a swarm: a horde of mosquitoes. See Synonyms at crowd1.

    2.

    a. A nomadic Mongol tribe.

    b. A nomadic tribe or group.

[ultimately (via Polish horda) from North-Western Turkic ordï, residence, court, from Old Turkic ordu.]

    hoard Pronunciation (hôrd, hrd)

    n.

A hidden fund or supply stored for future use; a cache.

    v. hoard·ed, hoard·ing, hoards

    v.intr.

To gather or accumulate a hoard.

    v.tr.

    1. To accumulate a hoard of.

    2. To keep hidden or private.

[Middle English hord, from Old English; see (s)keu- in Indo-European roots.]

    hoarder n.

Where's the Spelling Bee when you need him? I don't have a horde, not even of mosquitos...

  9. If you have firefox go to the extensions, https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/extensions/

    download and install:

the Adblock extension followed by the Adblock Filterset.G extension which ought to sort most of it out.

After this you can right click on ads you don't like and block them. It's best to follow the link to the part where it says /ads/ -or something like that, theres usually something obvious- then add a * afterwards, which blocks anything from that level downwards. You need to be a bit careful not to block stuff you actually WANT to look at, but it's possible to go into adblock options and unblock stuff.

Just to round things off, I also use The Proxomitron, from HERE which includes loads of blocking options.

    Have fun.

Oh, and if you haven't got it already, your version of Firefox should be 1.5.0.4

  10. So download Knoppix and use a CD. Or any of the alternatives here:

    Frozen Tech's LiveCD list

Some of the CDs have an install button which you can use to put the thing onto your hard drive, if you like it.

Or Solaris, which I find less clunky than some of the linux varieties I have tried...

Or something else I haven't thought of? Older stuff maybe. DOS, now there was an operating system. :)

  11. In My Opinion...

Cable 1: parallel cable and PS/2(mouse(?)) port

    Cable 2: serial port

Cable 3: two types of serial port (the large one = very old)

Cable 4: At a guess game pport and sound port thingies - why do you need to know these things?

Cable 5: More of the same

Heatsink: Looks like one of the ones of a slot one pentium 3

Lan: Well, yes, an ISA Lan card (again, who wants to know)

    Modem: Yes, it's a modem

Motherboard: it's an antique slot one motherboard. Get a new one.

What was the point, if I may ask?

  12. I'm married.

I think that if you can, you should get a complete set of in-laws that support you and like you.

Even if that means doing what you see as sucking up to someone you see as being a bit of a twat, do it pronto. You can decide later if you don't want to have someone like that as a relative. But please, sort him out for the wedding. It'll make everyone happier (I'm thinking of you, the bride and her father, and even those others if he "allows" them to go). You'll be able to cut the cake with a clear conscience.

My in-laws are mostly nutjobs, but I'm, glad I have them. So from that point of view I'd agree with everyone who thinks you sort this out, even if it is just for the short term.

    Ian.
