  1. Hello mate... more life here ;)

You on a cycle as well now?

Paul Sagar offered me his 26" to see how I get on. Not sure I fancy it yet though. When you've got the Oliver boys showing off round your garden, it sorta makes me feel I should just grow old and watch 'em :)

My lad can kick my arse when he hasn't got an engine as well, so I think that's even worse.

I'll give it a go, even if it makes me slightly better on the back wheel of my moto.

  2. :) .... i have witnessed him trying to cook a burger on a bbq which still had the plastic seperator sheets on it!!! Of course, he was very drunk at the time :D

How very dare you sir! Taken me 2 years to get moderator approval to get on here and defend myself.

Unfortunately I find I have no defence :ermm:

But with regard to the previous post, I'm currently hunting for a fat expert to take that title from me.....I'll be back!

  3. I don't think you will be able to run a 19" rim if you were running a 20" before if your running a rim brake because it won't set up properly?

except maybe if you can get adapters?

Only half inch difference at the point where the brakes hit the rim. Should be able to take it up with adjustment.

  4. Well please excuse the phone photo's - they look damned fine at only 1 inch by 1 inch, but not quite so fine on a big screen.

This is a new build bike kindly supplied by Mr Savage.

All gone together very nicely and the lad is over the moon with it. I can't believe how light the thing is.

And after breaking the Magura crossover cable within 24 hours we've now added the reinforced crossover cable and an HSI brake booster, and also moved to running the brakes on vodka - yep - cheap Aldi vodka - let's see how it goes. The brakes are good, can't see them freezing, lets see if there are any side effects :)

    Rough spec:

Bionic B2, Tryall hubs/rims, Worldcat ISIS cranks, ZHI greeneye freewheel, ZHI stem, VIZ bars and headset, hope front disc brake, and for now I've pinched a set of HS33's for the rear off a previous Monty - and added vodka as a test :)

  5. Well it may be controversial, but today I've put a 60/40 mix of water/vodka in my lads HS33's. The brakes are brilliant, so I've just got to wait and see if there are any side effects. I suspect not.

The vodka was based on how hard it is to freeze vodka - ideally I suppose I'd have used neat alcohol, but I don't have any lying around the house, so vodka it is. I have plenty of that :)

Get the cheap stuff and it's not much more than de-ionised water :) Wouldn't like to dring too much of it, but for brakes it seems ideal :)

Now I realise how little has gone from my bottle of water/vodka mix after flushing and bleeding the brakes, I may try neat vodka in the old Monty, just to see how that compares. I'm sure that would never freeze.

  6. From entry form ...

Venue: Harden Moor, near Keighley / Bingley

Directions: Post Code BD21 5QP. On the A629 at Keighley, at the roundabout next to "The Beeches" "Toby Carvery", take the turning signed for the railway station and Town Centre. Go straight past the railway station, then straight through the first set of traffic lights. Take the first left turning (immediate after EMU furniture centre) into Long Lee Lane. Follow that road, under a railway bridge then up the hill. Take the right turning into Shaw Lane, signposted Cullingworth. Follow this road until you come to "The Guide Inn" on a small crossroad. Turn left into Ryecroft Road, the trial is about ½ mile along here.

    See you there!

Thanks chap. That'll do nicely sir!

Just realised that looking at your username "chap" might not be entirely correct. Sorry if that's Barbara :$

  7. If one of the full members would be kind enough to post it in the Rides/Locations section under the Harden Moor topic, that might get me a quicker response (or any response at all) ;)

One distant day in the future I may be able to do it myself, but I'm getting on a bit, so I may well die first :-

That comment may have put me back a year or two, but you live and learn, hey ho :D

  8. Hi All,

Well I've been lurking here for a couple of years and enjoying the read. I'm a moto rider from the Shropshire area (Oswestry) who'd love to have another go at this game, but my recent attempts have left me thinking maybe I should leave it to my son, who's also a moto rider, but does have a bit of a thing for the bike trials.

I still manage to get round the expert route at moto, so thought I'd easily convert back to cycle trials after my youth days on various home made converted BMX/mountain bikes etc.

My attempts on a 20" were ridiculous at 6'3" and 120Kg, so I thought maybe a 26" was the answer. That didn't go much better, so it may well be that I stick to moto and continue as mechanic and minder for my lad at the cycle trials, but you never know, time will tell.

Anyway, the reason for my recent increased interest is a new build - Bionic B2, Tryall hubs/rims, Worldcat ISIS cranks, ZHI greeneye freewheel, ZHI stem, VIZ bars and headset, hope front disc brake, and for now I've pinched a set of HS33's for the rear off a previous Monty - all seems to be going together quite nicely, and as I mentioned elsewhere I'll get some photos done next week when the wheels are built.

This is for my lad by the way, not me, unfortunately :)

I know a few names round here, and no doubt some of you are Moto and know me from there. Hopefully we'll get round a few more bike trials next year and we'll get to meet some more of you.

    Cheers,

    Gaz Hinton

  9. Just putting a Bionic together at the moment (white). Looks like quality to me so far, and feels really light. I'll post a couple of pics next week. I chickened out on the wheel build due to not having the right spokes around (yeah right), or being able to get them locally, so I'm waiting for the back wheel to come back, and it'll be done.

Thanks to Monsieur Savage for turning it round really quick for me!

  10. To cut the steerer tube just use a hacksaw and cut it about and 1.5cm under the top of the stem.

As for the headset just use a mallet to tap it in, then tightening the top cap bolt will do the rest of the job.

That'll do for me - I was trying to avoid the bull in a china shop "I can do that" attitude - just needed the confidence to start chopping :)

    Thanks!

  11. Hi All,

When you look at my question, bear in mind I'm not even a noob yet, I'm a noobs dad with a bike to build. I'm used to the motorised versions and this stuff is all new to me.

Any tips on cutting the steerer tube to size?

And how do you make sure the headset is pulled in to the frame tight. Is it enough to use the headset cap to pull it in, or do I need to get it done properly?

    Cheers.

  12. Hi all,

I have a Monty frame with a duff thread on the front bolt of the sump guard. Any advice? Is helicoil the best way to sort it out? Can you buy them in small quantities? Are they easy to do, or would I be better to just shove it in to a shop and have done with it.

    Cheers
