    Slics were always touted as being great for the same reasons - also smoothness of pulling through - but I never actually had one. SP51 cable outer transformed my BB7s lever feel completely.

    Have you tried both the bb7 and bb5 caliper? I'm wondering if there's much difference?

    I had some MT2s, which if rumour be true became the MT Sports, and they were a nightmare. A friend has just got some and they're the same. Really temperamental, and even when they're working they feel soooooo spongey, and I never feel like it can be trusted. Seen him loop out on it a bunch of times even with Jitsie pads.

    Ideal world: 2x BB7 calipers, 2x SD7 levers, 2x Trialtech/Jitsie pads, 2x Linear Slic/SP51 cables. The cable is a huge deal on the rear - getting a cheap one leaves it feeling spongey.
    Failing that, if you want hydraulics, Hope or Shimano. The old SLXs felt and worked amazing and were crazy cheap. Unsure since they all changed to the newer style though.

  3. Thanks for the comments. I guess I thought this might be a good option for anyone wanting to do a bit of everything from street to natural trials.

    Obviously you would ideally want one of each but it would be good to see options for something that sits somewhere in the middle of a pure street bike and a pure comp bike. Maybe like a bit more of an old school geo?

    As a self employed person this really pisses me off. Its discrimination and I would argue that self employed people are more secure as its there own business compared to someone that is employed.

     But the good news is another house has just appeared and it ticks a lot of boxes!

    Its in a perfect location, not quite the nice fields like last time but it is sandwiched between two parks and while it might not have the views it’s still very easy to escape and be in the woods. It’s also still a rideable distance from Cathkin which is nice. It’s very close (just down the street) to Jane’s brothers house and a 5 min walk to her mums which is something Jane was keen on.

    The house itself is a two bedroom semi with off street parking (on a very quiet street anyway) and a decent sized garden. The house doesn’t seem to need any work doing and even the way it’s currently decorated/painted actually suites our taste. The home report didn’t flag anything up either.

    No basement but it does have a loft which is nice.

    We’ve booked a viewing for tomorrow, it’s still lived in and we’ll be shown by the owners. The advantage of being in Scotland is that the owners have a much bigger say in who actually buys the house, in England (and Wales?) the agent will just choose the highest offer but up here the owners can accept a lower one if they think they will be a better buyer.

    This house is at the top of our budget but it looks to be worth it, we’ll take a look and try and make a good impression 

    Ali would you mind if I asked what a house like that cost up there please, just so I can torture myself!

    Completely agree that London prices are f**ked, and therefore it drives commuter belt prices up too. I can only think much bigger taxes on 2nd homes and empty properties are the way to go, it has to be made less affordable for the super rich.

    Yes I agree. The government is always talking about having a housing chrisis and that they need  build more houses but surely if less people owned second homes there would more stock availabile for people to buy which would hopefully keep house prices sensible.

    A lot of people that live in my village own second homes, around here it seems very normal and I've noticed that some of my clients have started to buy 1 or 2 properties up North as investments as it's so cheap comparable to here.

    Cornwall is really bad like you've said. Locals can only afford the less desirable areas because of all the second homes bought for high prices in the nice areas.

    Same for me, my rent and general living costs in Bristol are twice what they were in Hastings, but now so is my salary... it all works out the same in the end, pretty much, unless you're in a minimum wage job, then it makes sense to move north and save some cash.

    Im sorry but I dont think its quite that simple.

    I dont earn minimum wage but id earn exactly the same up north as I do here doing the same job.

    A friend of mine recently moved north as his wife got a job up there and he now actually earns more doing the same job and his new house literally cost half up there compared to what he sold down here.

    No doubt there are a lot of people living in my area that commute into London that earn very healthy salaries and that drives up the house prices in the "commuter belt". However there are also a lot of people living in this area working locally and earning modest incomes that have to pay the high house prices to stay in the area. Its actually getting worse since Coronavirus as many people that lived and worked in London can now work remotely so they are now moving out to areas like this where they can get more for their money but still get into the city occasionally.

  9. Yes the south is ridiculous. 

    All my siblings live around Manchester and they've had no problem buying properties. My brother bought a nice 1 bedroom flat a few years ago in a good area for £100k. I recently saw a garage for sale near me for the same price!

    I've just been for a ride around Henley On Thames which is beautiful with some stunning houses but God knows what you'd need to be earning to live there.

  10. Very interesting reading this thread. Myself and wife are both self employed and have been for 15 years and its always been impossible to get a mortgage even with a huge deposit. We live in the South East where you need at least £300k to get 2 bed house! 

    It makes us so angry that self employed people are so badly penalised however we are fine to pay over £1000 each month in rent! 

    We just looked at a shared ownership property nearby that is £300k but we are just waiting to find out how much of it we could potentially afford. Id rather not do shared ownership but its better than renting forever.

    We are both seriously considering moving up north just because properties are so much cheaper. The only hard bit is having to close our business (hair salon) and start all over again. 

    House prices in the South East are crazy.

    Ali made the Crescent Ilions look pretty appealing too, but good luck finding one I guess.

    Thanks Mark. I know exactly what you mean. I have an Alias frame ready to build up but there's something holding me back from commiting to build it up.

    I know it sounds stupid but I think it maybe the lack of seat. I like my bikes to look like bikes plus it's nice not having to stand all the time.
