  1. So this guy who happens to be riding a weird mix of natural and concrete slabs isn't a trials rider? Not even though it's obviously a windy winter day and he's trekked to where ever to ride on his own. And he's especially not a trials rider in summer when he's on his brakeless 24 with a seat, and riding having fun with his mates.

  2. Are you intending to focus on riders alone or would you consider including interviews with people who are directly involved with Trials without being just* another rider?

    For example it could be interesting to include interviews with companies that have pushed the sport (Pace, Hope, Pashley & leeson all spring to mind).

    *Troll comment, I don't mean anything by it.

  3. I'd talk to the dentist before you attempt any legal action as it's well cited that broken endodontic files are left in the tooth during root canals.

    From Wiki's entry on Endodontic Therapy;

    Procedural accidents: Sometimes a tool can break while it is in the tooth. If the tip of a spiral metal file used by the doctor breaks off during the procedure, it is usually left behind and not extracted, leaving the patient with a small amount of retained metal. The occurrence of this event is proportional to the narrowness, curvature, length, calcification presence and number of roots on the tooth being treated. Complications resulting from retained metal are not well studied, but the occurrence of tool breakage is well documented.

  4. A bicycle brake isn't quite the same. If I ran a maggy these days, I'd happily run tea in mine just to prove a point...

    What type of tea works best? I thought about using green tea but I'm not sure if the caffeine content will affect my seals. Maybe I'd be better off trying some standard cheap tea form the little shop just down the road from my flat? Do you think there would be any benefit to using pyramid bags?
  5. Dependent on your view point I'm either old school or new to modern trials.

    I remember the early/mid 90s when hopping up a wall to bash was considered Trials. A time when all 26 bikes were too small hardtails with miniseats

    I remember tar being cool because it made our terrible cantis a little bit better. V-Brakes didn't exist yet.

    Side hops didn't exist. Why the hell would you hop up something sideways? That's stupid.

    I stopped riding trials and focused on other types of riding for 15 years.

    Last year I decided to buy a trials bike and hop up and over some objects. I've learnt from the beginning again, There's a wealth of available videos courtesy of the internet generations.

    FFW, the popularisation of seatless bikes, ISIS cranks are all more recent than my time. The rift between Mod and 26 is smaller than ever.

    Loathing seems de rigueur between different factions of trials riders. Street vs Comp vs TGS.

    I can still hop higher on my other bikes than I can on my trials bike and and at the moment I spend a lot of time learning new (to me) techniques. Up to front, side hops, etc.

    I don't do a lot of lines as much as practise the basics of hopping up and onto things. This makes me a TGS rider in many peoples eyes. I'd call it being a novice.

    Should I avoid riding with other people in case they judge me on what they believe my "style" is?

    I can and will add my own flair to my riding as I get more comfortable with controlling the bike on the back wheel but only if I choose to. Or I may stick to hopping up bigger and bigger walls and keep the creative riding for my BMX.

    Does that make the enjoyment I gain from riding my Trials bike any less valid?

  6. I think we're hitting a time now when they're on their way out of fashion. I know someone out where who's taken his out in hopes that they're going to shrink back up but it looks pretty bleak, and to be honest they're pretty noticeable.

    Least it's going to secure the jobs of plastic surgeons for the foreseeable future.

    A friend of mine, a well known modification artist, has seen a noteable increase of business due to ear reconstructions.

    He's been receiving daily requests for the last couple of years.

  7. Once you've removed the stem and all spacers put the topcap back on the forks and do it up tight so that the topcap is hard against the top of the steerer tube.

    Hold the topotube of the frame firmly in one hand with the frame between your legs so that you can brace it and stop it flapping about.

    Using your free hand, hit the topcap hard with a metal hammer (A lump hammer is best but you can use a claw hammer if it's all that you have).

    The only potential damage will be dents in the topcap.

  8. you could do both ways, every second spoke with head out and the other opposite??? :)

    The different forces applied to the flange by the alternating spokes make it extremely likely to crack. We've got a knackered front profile hub at home where the spokes pulled it to pieces (I'll admit that was on a fixed wheel and not a trials bike but that wheel surely saw less stress in it's life than your average front trials bike wheel).

  9. It still amuses me looking at "street" mtb frames with bbs dragging on the floor and chainstays a mile long.

    I hate to potentially pull up a well respected rider but many 26 street mountain bikes are running around 375 to 380 chainstays? This is certainly true of NS.

    I'll give you the BB height comment though as my Majesty is bang on 0 compared to the +20 of your Hex.

  10. How's it looking in London boys and girls? Specifically along the south side of the river? I wanna go riding there tomorrow but no point if it's snowing :(

    The snow (all 20 minutes of it last night) may as well have been a dream. London is definitely rideable.

  11. Even though it's set up freewheel, Chris is riding his sponsors fixedwheel bike, surely most of the people who will take an interest in this particular video are the fixieskidder tricks kids, most of whom are graphic designers or accountants in their mid to late 20s?

    When was the last time you saw any of them wear a helmet? In fact, find me a single video on say John Prolly or fixedtrix.com where any of the riders are wearing a lid?

    Trials is fairly unique in it's adoption of helmet wearing for all riding whether it's competition or a hungover sunday ride with your buddies but people will always make their own choices irrespective of Chris's perceived care of duty (Which is just that, perception not contractual obligation.

    I live next to Victoria park so may well drop over to the play area blocks in the afternoon and see if I can catch you all.

    Please have advanced warning that I suck at trials (ie. I've only just started)

  13. That's my recollectionof them too...

    I actually used a pair of these on an old Trailstar back in the 90s and then another pair a couple of years ago for a polo bike. They're solid forks but weight in at just over 1500g.

    There is almost certainly a second hand market in thew if you wished to sell them though as the entire of all terrain's old stock was bought by fixed gear riders.
