You don't really need any with the Conti tyres around - they're easily the best tyres out there at the moment.  For street stuff I'm not sure there's much I'd really change about them, and even for more trialsy stuff they seem good too.  Got a surprising amount of grip and a decent casing.

    these ones Mark?

  3. Have you driven one of the 1.6 Focus's's's's's's's's out of interest? I remembered you said you'd driven a few of them but wasn't sure if that was included. MPG seems to be largely the best for the petrol ones from what I can tell. It only having a 1.6 is a bit of a concern, but I need to get something sorted and it seems apart from that, there's just thousands of 206's people want to get rid of lining the streets of Bristol :P

i have i work for Ford and get to drive most engine and car combo's and for a daily normal car personally i wouldn't want a 1.6 petrol, maybe fine for my mum who nips to the shops or takes to dog out but there not a spritley machine and you have to flog them to get them to move in reality i would think combined mpg will be around 35-38mpg if you want to go the same pace of normal traffic, if you dont mind playing the mpg game im sure you could get into the 40's but would be painful

on the plus side they are cheaper to repair and less to go wrong over a diesel car

what kind of money do you want to spend?

  4. Indeed. I feel like sending either Derek or Garry a message with some suggestions but I'd feel cheeky...

Ah, yeah Aintree is probably the fastest over-the-line of the season. John must have added some ponies over the winter!

with that much money in a car though they must have a rough idea or be able to have a chat with a specialist to get them in the ball park regards there setup, i presume its the normal IRS rear end?

yes john had a new engine over winter its a fair chunk quicker!

  5. not surprised with the power it has!

i good friend of mine sprints in the speed series in his XE westy, john hoyle does very well with it proper rapid road legal machine 143mph last time out on the limiter 300m before the finish isnt bad for a n/a house brick with wheels!

  6. Strap bike upside down with bars at front of cage, rear wheel strapped to rear of cage, job done :-

On the subject of crazy cars, had a short play on track yesterday in a 480kg S2000 (255bhp) engined beast with a Sadev box and Geartronics setup with paddles. Such a strange feeling keeping your right foot flat on upshifts and not having any break in acceleration, and your left foot on the brake (autoblip downshifts) - was like a real life computer game, haha. So easy to drive quickly as well, was within a couple of seconds of the owner after having only driven 3 laps (one of which was a warm up - more a testament to the car than my driving I'm sure!). Definitely goes in the 'I want one of those' category, highly recommend having a drive of a similar gearbox setup if you get the chance, its just weird (but awesome)...

PS. My 1.4 tdci Fiesta never got anywhere near the book figures, best I ever had was 66mpg, more realistically low-mid 50s. Then the cambelt shat itself a little over half way into the service interval, completely destroying the engine.

i have been looking at the sadev box that comes in the 620r gets alot better reviews than the quaife units, mega bucks though

was it a 7 like car? 480kg for the s2000 engines cars is very very light as its a heavy old lump!

there is a nice supercharged one doing the speed series at the moment

  7. What car do you have Alastair? Sounds interesting!!

Mark don't get a petrol, considered a 1.4 tdci fiesta? They easily get 70mpg pootling about and £30 tax is decent. Mk5 fiesta not sure when they start maybe 2001 onwards?

They are fairly nippy for what they are and pretty damn trouble free

fiesta is a good shout, quite sure you could get a bike in there with just the front wheel off, i get my 20 in without taking any wheels off

    dan this one

i suppose its how much hassle you want to go through, my daily is a lotus and i get my bike in there, but need to put the forks and bars back on at the other end it takes about 3 minutes so its not that bad really

  8. Cool, cheers for the heads up (Y) Don't seem to be many/any TDCi's anywhere nearby but I'll keep an eye out.

EDIT: Just did some more reading up - seems most people only get around 40-45mpg max out of the 1.6 petrol version. That's not particularly amazing...

I wouldn't buy a 1.6 100ps focus, it's not a light car and the engine struggles sometimes, the later focus has a 120ps vct 1.6 if you do want a petrol that has a little more grunt

1.6 diesel is good in the 04 onwards, need oil changes every 6k to stop turbo issues and injector seals fail but there good for well into the 50mpg

How much should I be paying for a complete 1.8T (inc. all ancillaries, turbo, loom and ECU) from a Passat/Audi (needs to be a longitudinally mounted one)? Should I be looking to stick with the stock loom and ECU or going aftermarket? I would like to start acquiring parts as soon as we get the keys to the house we bought, not in a huge rush but wouldn't mind getting stuck into it quite soon! Not sure if it'll go in my 924 (likely) and keep with the standard map or if I will fit it to a 944 (less likely) with the bigger brakes and stuff already fitted allowing for more ponies instantly. Alternative engine suggestions welcomed for the 924, I did also have a Saab 2.3T in mind but I fear it'll be too much power and weight for such a dainty little car, 150-170bhp is probably more than enough for it

Saab engines and ecu are very tuneable no need for aftermarket if you can retain the oem ecu

Powerwise, you can never have enough, it's only goes as fast as you press the pedal I have around 620bhp per ton through the rear wheels and have no issues just a large smile

  9. been a while

sold my vx220 and purchased an Elise a 190bhp 8,500rpm toyota engined variant

also got the toy ready for re taxing and mot for this season, had some nice improvements, mostly to make it neater and lighter, carbon and lightweight parts saving afew kg

  10. The local council may have a piece of land I can use for a trials park. I'm meeting with them within the next month. Anyone help me out on where I stand with insurances and so on. I can get obstacles and other things. The land is a fair size and there is maybe the possibility of a small office in a container.

im local normanton and would help out, drop me a pm can have a chat about it

  11. Yea that's the toss up at the moment. It'd be used daily, so I'm bound to lose money either way. The GT3 is definitely going to hold money, but I'm in two minds now.

It's a while off still, so plenty of time to mull it over. Have you driven either, by any chance?

    driven a 996 carrers 2 s and boxster s

i wouldnt use a gt3 as a daily no way would kill the value and cost alot in tyres and brakes, can you not run two cars?

have a nice toy and a normal car like a 330d estate or somthing like that

  12. I'd be tempted by new if I went the Cayman S route, plenty of reviews saying they are a better car even than the 911. Also then get the option to spec it specifically to my needs, but obviously at a cost.

Gt3 wise it'd be looking at a used 997 version. Don't think I'd be able to stretch to new there, being as a decent spec starts hitting £118k.

Where I was looking there's also a brand new Ferrari garage. Wouldn't be tempted personally, but they don't half sound good!

as much as i would like a new car at some point to loss that you would take on that would put me off! at least the gt3 hold there value. is it to use daily or just on weekends? if its a weekend toy car id buy a older turbo 911 from specialist cars malton they have some proper weapons and you will make money on them not loose

  13. Just spent a couple of hours going through permutations on Porsches, still can't really justify it with the wedding coming up :(

However, I never thought I wanted anything but the GT3, and definitely not a Cayman S/R, but then I saw and got in one. Is there any obvious reason I'm missing that they're so much cheaper than their 911 based equivalents?

I hope this post doesn't come across as it obviously could, just asking car enthusiasts their opinion rather than trying to gloat - especially being as I haven't ordered anything yet!

    how old? or new

im selling a couple of cars next year and was wanting a 996 gt3, but then started looking a 996 turbo with the later x50 pack as there more usable i think, but could have a nice aston for that money 30k upwards

cayman r looks good, but still not a 911!!! i do like the white boxster spyders with the red roof though but not really a daily motor!

    new heater for xmas!

remain of the old one, removed with my foot

  14. As a few of you may recall I have been tinkering with the idea of going for a vag 1.8t conversion on my Porsche. Although I'm fairly sure this would be the most suitable engine I was wondering what other alternatives there were to consider, one I had in mind was the Saab 2.3t as they are damn good engines, cheap with plenty of tinkering potential. I also noticed the Mercedes 2.3 kompressor engines seemed to fit the bill but I know nothing about them. What other similar choices are there? Preferably around the 2l size, forced induction with a minimum of 150bhp stock.

Why when there are perfectly good Porsche engines from the same car?
