Headset Creaking ?

Hi guys, as topic reads, i'm having some creaking noises from my headset ( atleast im pretty sure it's headset), and i've tried any number of things to stop it ?

I've taken stem off, cleaned everything up and put it all back together, but i still hear the noises ?

It's sort of like a crank/bb creaking sound dry metal on dry metal ? (it's not the cranks, as it makes the noise when i put weight on the bars)

Should i grease the steerer tube ? is it possible i have top cap on too tight? but the forks turn easily asif not too tight?

I'm not a bike mechanic or anywhere near lol so forgive me if its obvious to any of you guys, i'm just not too sure what to try.

Thankyou for any help :)

Most likely a loose headset- but the noise can also be a result of a loose handle bar. What bar is it? I have had Tryall bars that just start creaking after awhile.

Do you know how to check for a loose headset? If not have some one help you isolate your problem. Riding with a creak in the steering can rob one of confidence.

It's not the bars because, if i press down hard on frame near headset, or hold top of forks and do the same i hear the creaking, and sometimes if i lift front end and turn bars( thats only after ive pressed down though).

It's my own fault lol i used to live near a top bikeshop and get everything done there, so i never realy learnt how to do it all myself hehe :$

Forks may be on there last legs, hopefully not. look for cracks on join of steerer to fork legs and the top of each leg just to make sure.

if not the headset probably isn't mounted properly that should be a quick fix.

It's definatley not the bars or stem, because when i press down hard on the top tube near hedset it still creaks.

I asked in my local bikeshop today, (bus ride away so no bike with me) and they suggested greasing the barings and to make sure its sat right ?

This prob doesn't help, but I had a creak from my front end recently. I had brand new viz forks, brand new fsa orbit x headset, brand new neon stem and brand new rockman bars. I swapped everything around to see what item it was that was creaking, low and behold I changed the ehadset and it was that that was creaking. No idea as to why it was creaking, but I've kept the old one in with the new parts and it's so quiet.

I bought the headset from Chain reaction, so I've e-mailed them asking if they have any idea aboutt he noise.

Before anyone says it, I fitted the headset myself, and it was fitted correctly and properly.

I've almost sorted it out, i greased it all up and then i noticed spraypaint on the forks steerer tube, as the forks have been sprayed black, i took off the paint around the racer and put all back together and now it only creaks a little now and then. So maybe i need to strip off all the paint on steerer tube and clean and grease?
