  1. No worries chap, we've all had to start at some point, will be glad to meet you and see you develop your riding! :)

We can meet you whatever time you come up, did you want my number to give us a shout when you arrive?

Cheers mate, I've got Lukes number but If you could pop me urs in a pm that would be great. Looking forward too it B) Might bring my camera along too if you guys want? (Its not that great, just a cheapo DSLR, you might have better?)

  2. Yo chaps!

After having a bit of a chat with the main man Luke of Colchester, we are planning to ride on friday afternoon/evening.

We are riding after 5, presumably meeting at either the roundabout or sloped orange walls (Luke will probably confirm this).

Hopefully some new faces on the scene too, so lets get on this and keep Essex alive!

    (Y)

    Hey dude

Sounds awesome! Just started pretty recently so if you don't mind a n00b cramping your style... >_< . Got a driving lesson in clacton around 4 ish and Ill have 2 take the train up from clacton so I prob wont be up there until around 6-7

  3. Hey guys, Ive started Trials biking recently i have a mod saracen mad 2 zero which ive heard isnt the best of trials bikes to buy but Hey it does the job for the time being.

I just fort id be friendly and say hello to everyone really :)

    Craig

Where are you from in essex mate, near Colchester by any chance?

  4. thanks mate ill get the 1.3 probs cozive got 150 pounds now and i got 200 coming in a week or so i could go and pick it up tmoz thanks alot

    Ok dude, happy to help.

With the extra money I would look at upgrading the rear brake first getting some good vees (Avid sd7's give brilliant performance/money) and also get some sd7 levers because the stock tektros feel like shite.

I find the front disk fine for trials after it has been bedded in but you might want to look at an avid bb7 setup if your not convinced.

If your learning would defo recommend upgrading to some good platform pedals because the stock caged are never that pleasant to wack your leg into (as I have managed many times) ;) And then you will probably want to get rid of the gears and buy some sprockets and something to tension your chain with.

Good luck with your new phase :)

  5. Hi im jordan im 14 years old and 5 foot 1 i like mad phases and the onza rip which should i get MAD 1.3 for 109.99 brand new and upgrade it or the MAD 1.2 for 250 and put a rear sprocket on it or get the onza rip and leave it the same i have 350 pounds to spend ive never ridden a trials push bike before i have a bmx and a specialized mountain bike i hqve a sherco 125 trials motorcycle but thats it thanks jord

Hey mate, I got a phase 1.3 a few months ago and I couldn't be more happy with it to be honest.

I heard at the time that the red phase 1.2 was better value (couldnt afford it at time though) but from what I can see now (Knowing a bit about trials) You could probably buy all of the upgrades that come with the 1.2 for the extra £140; from a description I just read the things your paying extra for on the 1.2 are the hs33's and the maxxis tyres.

So I would say its all down to whatever colour you prefer and if you would rather choose your own upgrades. :turned:

    Hope that helped!

Edit: Ah just thought of something... You don't get the magura mounts on the 1.3 and thats the only real benefit of the 1.2 I can see.

  6. Im a bit of a newbie to trials but I must of watched hundreds of trials clips and movies now and the amount of people that ride left foot forward really surprises me!

I assumed that people who are right handed would naturally ride with their right foot forward however after doing a bit of goggling the percentage of left handed people in the world is somewhere between 10%-20% and It seems a much larger percent of peeps in trials vids ride left foot???

It would be great to get a poll going to see how figures go on this forum and to also see if anyone rides opposite foot forward to what they write with. Sorry for the essey but its not just you >_<

  7. Thanks for replies. I managed to sort it by stripping a section from top layer of plastic housing the same size as the ferrel and then sliding it over.

The Odyssey linear slic cable has two layers of plastic protection with two layers of metal cable wrapped inside(extremely hard to get a clean cut with standard wire cutters) Next time I will be getting some better wire cutters and I will try to do a proper job.

Could be that you have the wrong sized Ferrule. There are a couple of sizes, and they all look very simular. Take your cable housing to the LBS and have them get you the proper sized Ferrules.

The Odyssey cable came with the two ferrules so I'm sure its just that I did such an awful job cutting the wire. Would be great to hear from anyone with experience cutting the same cable =]

  8. I just got a new odyssey Linear slic cable for my trials bike and I really need some tips fitting it.

I have managed to cut one end of the housing to size (With great difficulty!) but I can't manage to slide on the cable end fitting (think there called ferrules) as it is smaller than the housing. Please give me any tips if you have installed a similar cable before. Thanks

  9. make sure you get some decent pads

What would you recommend for when I get a bit more money. By the way its for a stock phase 1.3.

The irony was that right after I ordered the new brakes I went out 2 practise my back wheel hops and attempt some pedal kicking but tektros slipped and I fell on my ass and slightly sprained my wrist. Starting to heal now and I think I will be able to ride again when new brakes arrive :D First time I had properly fell of as well.

  10. yes, just make sure you get a good cable and pads

Just ordered Avid SD7's, an odyssey linear slick cable and I got a pair of speed dial 7 levers. Came to £45 altogether (new) a good bit less that HS33 would of cost me. Lets hope they feel much better than my current tektro's. ^_^

  11. Glad I read this thread before buying hs33 for my v mount. Looks like its a bit of a pain in the ass to set up. Would a mechanical v brake such as SD7's give the same feel and performance as hydraulic rims?

  12. There's about 4 guys who still ride in Clacton, unfortunately they don't post here very often. If your on Facebook you can add them.

There's Rob Rook from Point Clear, Scott Davis from Jaywick, Darren King and Jacob Junczyk.

Colchester wise, there's about 3-4 guys who ride there, 2 of them are fairly new to trials so they would be ideal to learn with (assuming that you are just starting out)

I'm from Braintree, which is only a short train ride away to the lovely rocks in Clacton, and there's another lad here who rides.

Cheers! I bumped into Rob and Scott doing trials down at clacton beach when I went out on my trials bike for the first time last week. Very random and lucky! Given me some tips to get started. Both sounded like really decent guys!

Nice one Luke! Look forward to meeting you guys. I'll be sure to drop you a text.

  13. Oh cheers Oli, that's given me something to think about. I've been riding my bike 2-3 weeks now and the brakes still arn't much better. I've tried adjusting them over and over again, but you still have to squeeze the damn things so hard :D

I couldn't believe how hard you had to pull just to lock the back wheel compared to the Avid SD5's I've got on my MTB but that's nothing. At the moment I haven't even managed to lock the front so lets just say my fingers hate Tektro IO's :D

Edit: and don't mock me pro's I've also adjusted and re-adjusted tens of times with no luck :L

  14. The main part that I would recommend replacing is the rear brake pads but if you are just sratrting the standard pads will be fine but as soon as it starts to fail replace them for pads such as Rock CNC pads or TNN CRM pads. I have the Rock pads on a light grind but the CRM pads may be better on a smooth rim.

Apart from that there are no other parts that need to be changed. You may find as you learn more about the sport you will find things that you will want to upgrade such as converting to single speed. There are a couple of things you should check on the bike as often as possible, first is the wheels to make sure that the cones are nice and tight as they tend to come loss with trials use and if they do they can cause a lot more damage due to the greater pressure put on the wheel than normal use. The other thing is the drive side chainstay is a lot thinner than the non drive side and those frames do tend to brake at this point but they can last a long time with heavy riding. It should be fine as you are just starting but if you find yourself doing large things just keep an eye on it for cracks.

Apart from that it is a great bike you have there to learn on and you should have a lot of fun on it.

Cheers again Oli. very helpfull! Going to try and bed my disk brakes in properly next week. If that fails I'm going to go for some BB7's.

    Thanks again

    Oli

  15. Hi guys, sorry, I know there are tons of threads similar to this but I'm such a newbie to trials that most of it just washes straight over my head. Basicaly, I ride a M.A.D. Phase 1.3 stock, which seems to be ok for a beginner, however the brakes are pretty shocking. I can't use one finger to lock either the front disk brake or the rear v-brake easily and I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions as to what I should do. I can't spend too much on the brakes, but I still wan't some brakes that'll let me use one finger to lock the wheels. Would better pads be enough for the rear or would I have to get completely new brakes? And what kind of disk brakes should I be keeping my eye out for?

    Thanks for your help!

Hey Pete. I'm in the same boat at the moment. Just got a Phase 1.3 the other day and the brakes are shocking. I'm saving up for avid BB7's for the front and Avid Single Digit 7's for the back (Tried SD 5's and they are amazing for the price)

A guy on this forum called Oli P was helping me out in a thread I made with the same sort of questions not so long ago: Here

I'm going to give my brakes another week to bed in but If I'm still not happy and I don't think I will be! I'm gonna get the brakes I stated above. Read some great reviews and from my previous experience Avid make some dayum good brakes.

  16. My portfolio: http://csswizardry.com/

I don't do a lot of freelance, as I work full time at an agency, but if you want to know any clients I've worked on/with gimme a shout :)

Thats a nice portfolio. I came across your Web Design+ tips and started having a read; Very very interesting. I bookmarked and will definitely be using these tips in the future.

In terms off CSS/HTML knowledge you must be quite a few lightyears ahead of me but I do hand code all of my projects using (my basic knowledge) of CSS/HTML. Regarding the Onza site, do you use msn so we could have a good talk about it?

  17. Heh, cheers, although I did make a f*cking typo didn't I :S

There's nothing wrong with the designs, they aren't bad—but I just think that you'd have to go a lot further than you have to make a redesign viable.

It's very similar in style, shape and size to their current one (which hasn't been updated in f*cking forever!) I think it needs more whitespace and consistency, more of a brand.

What is it you do? I'm a web designer/developer, maybe collaborate and pitch something big at them… I could do with a new bike ;)

Cheers mate! I know the redesigns need a lot of work but I do think If I really thought it would be worth my effort that I could make something very cool for Onza.

Funny you should say about a new bike. The only reason I had a go at a new design was in pure hope that I could tempt them to give me a new Onza bike :P I thought even if they didn't like the designs enough, they might feel a bit of sympathy about how much I wanted a trials bike and just sent me one. :L

(couldn't wait any longer and ended up splashing out on a cheap phase bike to get started with)

I am also a web designer/developer in the free time I can fit around college. Colaborating and Pitching something to them sounds like a smashing idea though! Very interested if you still are.

You got any work you can show me. Two of my latest sites:

    colchesterclassics
