My Dad started trials when he was 54 and he's doing alright, so you should be fine. You can pretty much write the first 9-12 months off because you'll be trying to learn to pedal kick (but keep learning the other bike control skills as well), but if you stick with it you'll soon start progressing after that. I prefer to ride a front disc just because you can ride quietly through the city or/and on steep roads without wearing your brake pads at warp speed. I ride a HS33 front though (I bought my bike used and it came this way ...)
