  1. Finally went riding in the Alps.

Left the SLR at home, but took the Coolpix. Love that camera. Even crashed hard and rolled over my Camelbak with it in, not the slightest hint of it taking a knock.

Do you have a full write up of this? Looks epic.

I don't unfortunately, it's not something I'd really thought about to be honest as I don't consider myself much of a writer! I've barely looked through much of the photos yet, let alone processed them.

Thought that triptych worked well though, showing the evening that we hit Reactor 5 at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. :)

  3. Unfortunately it's one of those unavoidable things, it is surprising with the full frame bodies how quickly dust becomes apparent. The sensor cleaning is a lot better in the DX bodies due to the physically smaller sensor and shutter, so there's more room to fit the cleaning mechanism and make it more effective.

I highly recommend the Dust-Aid Dust Wand Kit. By far the best evaporation of any cleaning solution I've used and the swabs are as fine, tough and lint resistant as they come.

I haven't had the lens off my D750 since I bought it, brand new. Literally the cap was off the body just to fit the new lens, indoors and carefully. Tonight I did a 30 second exposure and there's dust spots all over the photo.

Is it normal for bodies to come from the factory like this? Instinct tells me that Nikon would probably not allow this, but I can't see how I did it when I've had the body open for less than 5 seconds, once.

What lens is it? If it's a zoom there's a high chance of dust getting in the barrel and in turn the camera.

Hell, even my Coolpix A which has a fixed lens has got a mother of a dust spot on the sensor and the lens isn't even removable!

So, going back to the Nikon D750 and grey imports etc...

I'm now looking to buy, brand new, so want a good price but I want legit stuff with legit warranty.

From a quick Google it looks like SLRhut are the cheapest, but I know nothing about them. Jessops seem to be about £300 more expensive, but that's no surprise.

    Any tips appreciated!

It's a UK company though, Richmond Cameras if I remember correctly. I wouldn't trust a Hong Kong warranty or anything, but this company looked legit and had 100% positive feedback.

    Doesn't mean it's not imported.

A little googleing reveals that everything they sell is either used or a Grey import. The warranty is only a shop warranty, as in they'll pick up any bills if you run into problems and get Nikon to service it.

That's if Nikon UK will service it. If I remember rightly there was a string of grey imports sent in for service to Nikon UK after just a few thousand clicks that turned out to be fakes and had had the firmware tampered with. Naturally, Nikon UK refused to touch them after learning that, and returned them to their owners with the original problems still prevalent.

I've bought grey import lenses before as they usually have a working life of 10+ years, but I'd never buy a grey import body.

WTF is up with second hand places selling for silly money?

Can get a new D750 on eBay for £1,099 with a three year warranty, but some second hand places are selling "mint" ones for £1,200.

It's not second hand places selling for silly money, it's the fact the ones on eBay are grey imports.

So yeah, that three year warranty? Not worth the HTML it's written in.

  8. Can't remember who, but someone was asking about the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC

Here's a few samples at various widths and apertures. Even in extreme backlit situations both sharpness and contrast remain perfect right into the corners, but the thing that most impresses me so far is the fact there's virtually no chromatic abberation or lens flare even in the most abhorrent lighting situations. It's a thing of beauty!

Also I highly recommend clicking the photos to see them properly, they seem soft where TF has resampled them in the actual post.

  9. Still not posted any example shots from the new Tamron 15-30mm that someone wanted to see, oops.

In the mean time though, I've been playing with another new toy... Nikon Coolpix A. Holy funk I should have bought one of these years ago, the size, weight and quality is liberating.

  10. Just remembered there's something more obvious that may be the issue.

When you hold down the WB button and use the thumb wheel, it changes the white balance... But if you accidentally use the front scroll wheel instead then it changes tint to either warm (A1-A6) or cool (B1-B6)

Try it and make sure it is set to 0.
