Gearing Help

Recommended Posts

HI,

Just need abit of help with gearing, I use to ride 22t up front and 16t on rear

Iv just changed to a 18t on the rear and its made loads of difference to ride, makes the bike feel so much lighter and responsive

Th only thing is I will be getting some new cranks and i think the biggest chainring I can get on them is 16t

what would i need on the back to get the same ratio as I have now?

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks

Vee

I make it a 13T rear you'll need with a 16T front.

22 / 18 = 1.2222

So to get that ratio with a 16T front,

16 / 1.2222 = 13.091147

16T front, 13T rear.

Could I just ask how you got that?

Divide 22 by 18 to get a ratio

then 16 by the ratio to get the sprocket size?

Thanks alot

Vee

Yeah, that's it.

You can work it backwards to check it's right.

22 divided by 18 = 1.222222

16 divided by 13 = 1.2307692

Which is close enough for this, and as close as you can get. :)

Thanks alot, ill be writing this down haha :D

Vee

;) For reference,

Gear Ratio = Number of teeth on driving sprocket ÷ Number of teeth on driven sprocket

Therefore, when re-arranged;

Number of teeth on driven sprocket = Number of teeth on driving sprocket ÷ Gear Ratio

And;

Number of teeth on driving sprocket = Number of teeth on driven sprocket x Gear Ratio
