  1. Will do but first I'm going to install everything again from a proper XP disk as it's already got a virus.

Yeah it's got the wireless card built into the laptop, it's a gateway MX6926b

I'll update if any better in a few days, cheers anyway

  2. They are the network connections - however there is no wireless connection in there so I can only assume you haven't installed the drivers.

Have you tried connecting the laptop directly into the back of the router via ethernet cable? That should work and allow you internet access so you can download on it.

After that, go to the laptop manufactures website and search for your model of laptop, then into the appropriate category (networking) and download the required wireless drivers. Keep in mind that sometimes all driver packages do is unzip themselves (C:/DRIVERS) and will then need to be opened in there and run the .exe setup file (if its there).

If not, go to device manager (Control Panel>System>Device Manager) and find your wireless card within there (perhaps with a yellow ? symbol). Right click it, click 'Install' and direct the driver installation search to the C:/DRIVERS specific location - should install without an issue then.

Keep in mind that successful connections don't show themselves in the bottom right corner by default on XP - once everything is installed you'll have to right click the Wireless Connection in Network Connections and go to Properties, make sure the box at the bottom is ticked to show active connections in the toolbar.

Just connected the laptop to the wireless router through an ethernet cable and it worked fine. Went into device manager and clicked on "update driver" and it didn't work, just scanned for a bit then said you need the original CD, useful.

Tried going onto the manufactures site as well and installing network drivers from there, didn't work either. Just can't find anything that says about wireless anywhere in the drivers or on the site. Would it be because I've installed service pack 3 and it used to have service pack 2 (i think)?

How can connecting to the internet be so hard, this is why PCs should die a slow death

Ok it looks like the net adapter (assuming the wireless one) is working but when I click properties nothing is entered for IP address, address type etc. Must have to do something for it to establish the connection to my wireless, but WHAT?

  3. Nope some old gateway thing.

Yeah thats what I'm missing I think, the drivers. Scanned and downloaded loads of the drivers off the gateway website but dosen't seem to do much. Don't have the original driver CD as it's about 5 years old. Everything I research talks about wireless USB dongles but this has a wireless card built in which comes up under network connections. However I just can't find anywhere about scanning for wireless networks to connect to mine

  4. Right, my girlfriends laptop was full of viruses so I've formatted it and installed windows XP SP3. Now it all works but there is nothing on it at all (obviously), but the main bugger is getting the little wireless icon in the bottom tray. Any ideas? Main thing to do first is get the net going so I can download stuff. Found this link which is exactly what I want: click but I didn't think that was an extra patch that needed installing? Wireless net is fully working in my house (and hers) but I can't get the laptop to scan to connect to it. Following the crappy wizards on the laptop are next to useless, god I hate PCs.

    Any help much appreciated

  5. it is the iPhone all day long.

I hate apple with a passion - but would go as far as to say I could not imagine my life now without my iPhone. It is that good. nothing else I have tried comes even a little bit close.

    Flash ? HTML5 baby - who cares.

Id even go as far as to say get a 3Gs over a 4 and get a cheap contract.

EDIT : Limited data contracts blow.... not sure if there are any unlimiteds left ?

I recently looked at getting the 3Gs on O2 and the price was exactly the same per month, all they were going to give me was a 8gb phone for free. So I dished out the £119 for the phone and got the iPhone 4. Amazing bit of kit, feels well made in the hand and is very smooth. Having played quickly with a few HTCs they just arn't as smooth and nice to use. According to O2 about 90% of it's customers will never reach the 500mb limit per month so don't worry about that.

It tends to be routine to hate the iphone because it seems like every tom dick and harry has one but it's popular for a reason, it's a great bit of all round kit.

  6. Nope, don't go avid. I'e been reading up on them a lot as i want a new rear brake and so many people have said not to bother it's unreal. I've not heard this kind of unanimous decision since people started asking if trials-uk is a good site to use! My rear avi is only the 3 and it's supposed to be one of the more reliable ones, mines (for want of a better phrase) absolutely wank.

Shimano saint's 2010. If you want power and ease of use, that's your brake. Plus they look mint too.

Got a magazine with some disc brake supertest things here where they tested the brakes on a dynamo and recorded all the results. Could always scan it and upload if it'd be of any use?

The thing with trying to research on the net about brakes (or anything) is that one person will say they're amazing and another don't bother, so it's hard to know what to do. I would of said from the get go that a Juicy 3 would be pretty turd since it's the lowest end brake they do?

Yeah i've heard other people say about saints before but I think they may be a bit much like fatty said.

Juicy 3's suck. The elixirs have a much better lever/piston technology, and better caliper for better cooling. Juicy range gets better at the 7's but the 3 definitely has a cheaper caliper which is where the power loss is from, then the 3 lever only has lever reach adjustment.

Shimano are good if you can bleed brakes, it's the mechanics brake. I can say the saints are very good brakes, yeah, but wayyy too much for that trail bike! 2010 saints are 4 pot beasts.

I think elixirs would be best... There's hayes as an alternative but they make the worst sound ever. Maguras are pretty nice like a set of louises but maybe a little less common on bikes in this country so slightly harder to get bits for (?) The only thing you'll struggle with is actually bleeding them if you need to change hose or anything (on the elixirs), it's probably the most complicated bleed out there but it's definitely do-able. The manual's pretty straight forward, but the thing is, you probably won't need to do it.

Yeah I think I'll try and get a set of elixirs, should do the job nicely. Plus I've seen a few good sets go on ebay for about £150 which is £50 less than what a set of hope x2's go for.

    cheers!

  7. Wouldn't bother. Hope isn't the name, it's the instructions! They bite awesome but have no hold whatsoever, might suit some riding types but i think they're lacking if they can't lock the wheels!

Alternatives then? What about higher end avid? Got hayes sole's at the moment which bite ok but as soon as your gunning it down a track it's squeeze and hope! Calipers are too small so heat up quickly

  8. Nice website! I was expecting something way below that standard. You've got some wicked images on there. Onlyyy thing I would say is that as nice a feature as the gallery may be, the images appear very small. Since you're using a 5D mark II images are going to be high quality and sharp so I'd want to see them bigger. The front page images are nice because you can see the level of detail due to their size, however the main images just arn't big enough

    keep up the good work

  9. A friend of mine who I used to work with is currently in Aus with his girlfriend. They've been there for nearly two years now and are home soon due to their visa running out.

He emailed me last night after talking a bit about thinking of going to aus.

    He said:

As for coming to Australia, I'd say hell yes, do it. It’s taught me more about myself then anywhere and I'm going to miss the freedom of the open road so, so much. It’s also a photographers dream.

Moneys good with minimum wage being about $18.00 which converts to an impressive 9.00 Pounds an hour. Don’t get drawn into the backpacker crowd though because their all idiots riding Mummies credit card and have to pack an extra bag just to fit the hair straighteners.

My top advice for you is this.

    BUY A CAR.

Cheap, rusty hunk o' shit. Whatever. If you have that your ok. Patrols cheap Ford and Holden’s (The Australian GM Motors) have fantastic fuel economy and you can go anywhere. Put a few dents in it? Who cares? Run it into the ground. If you just live in youth Hostels and take the buses or Greyhound coaches all you'll ever see is the inside of Irish themed bars full of fake tanned Essex girls.

Buying a van and driving around Australia has changed my life. Really. Countless adventures I'll never forget. I love our little van.

For the love of god make sure the air con works though!"

  10. I bought some CX 300's from Play for £8.50 under playtrade, after just under two years one ear bud stopped working and the wire mesh fell out. Sent them back under their two year warranty and they sent me a new replacement of the CX 300 II version. Not bad going for £8.50! Good sound for the money

  11. Rob, aslong as you get some rockshox forks that are "U turn" they can be travel adjusted externaly (Y)

Unfornately Pikes dont have a normal Q/R hub option.

Revelations do have Normal Q/R and 20mm maxle options.

Pikes are slightly more on the beefcake/dh side of riding.

What front hub have you got? If its a hope pro2 or bulb you can get 20mm converters. If that were the case i'd got for Pikes.

Only reason I wouldnt go for Fox forks is that the people I know that have owned them have had various reliability issues.

Rockshox and Marzzochi tend to be a bit more fit and forget.

    Hope that helps a little.

Thanks very much, great help! Yeah I guessed the U-turn was RS's system for adjusting travel, sounds good. I've got a crappy shimano hub on the front but I'm planning on getting a pro 2 for the rear, so I may get one for the front to match, so the 20mm option is possible!

The pikes sound perfect then really if I get a new hub, sweet! I was just getting confused with whats better, coil, air and have no idea what an external floodgate is and all that jazz.

Fox forks are nice but be prepared to look after the seals and service them regularly (although to be fair all forks need servicing regularly).

My Fox Float seals died after a year, however replacement seals are only £15 and suspension oil is cheap so I got them fixed up for under £25, I was also lucky that I had a mate who knew what he was doing and did the service for me. Fox Recommend you clean the seals and put more oil on the foam rings every 15 hours of riding (I have been known to do this much riding over 2 days!) whereas other forks have much longer service intervals. Saying that I didn't exactly look after the seals on my forks and it took over a year for them to die!

I would say stick with Rockshox or Fox if you can afford. Your bike should be cool for 140mm forks as that's what they now spec on the Marin Hardtails I don't know if they have changed the geometry of the frames though so it might be worth researching into that just in case your frame is designed for 130mm maximum! I wouldn't worry about adjustable forks or lockout etc... but that's my personal preference really, although saying that the U-Turn system would allow you to run the forks at 130mm so you can stick with the same length you already have. I have heard many good things about Revelation forks so if you don't want to upgrade to 20mm axle they are probably your best bet.

Actually, if you want some 2008 Fox Float 140RL forks in good condition that have had a recent seal and oil change I may consider selling them if I can find a good deal on some Pikes! I like my Fox Floats but I would love to upgrade to Pikes just to get the 20mm axle!

Thanks ticcy! How much would you be after for the float 140RL's? I'm looking to slowly upgrade bits before next summer, I've forgotten how expensive upgrading bike bits are, god knows how I afforded to build my trials bike back in the day.

Great help everyone, seems to have narrowed it down a bit!

  12. I see, it's a bit confusing when one person says you have to take them apart to adjust them and your saying they have a travel adjustment nob on top?

I didn't think choosing forks would be this hard! Just some decent, adjustable forks with a turnable nob on top, no fancy axels, for under about £350?

  13. I've been told that the RockShox Revelation's can't be travel adjusted from the top, you have to take them apart and put some kind of spacer in? God that sounds like a hassle!

I want something I can twist the adjustment nob ontop to quickly change the travel?

Also with the Pikes, do they always come with the 20mm Maxle? That won't be any good as I'll need a new hub as well.

  14. Yeah they look good! I'm not sure why mine make a strange clicking noise, very annoying. Do these always come with the pushlock? I guess thats to quickly lock them out from the bars?

I'll keep an eye out on ebay! The fox ones look awsome but out of my price range

  15. Looking at upgrading the suspension forks on my Marin B17, came with Rock shox toras which are alrite, bit spongy for my linking and after about 15 mins riding they make a really strange clicking noise. Apparently this is a typical rock shox thing?

I want something all round really, I use the bike to ride to work, in the woods, cross country and hopefully more singletrack next year. Also being able to adjust the travel would be awsome and lock out too.

    How do these look?

    bit pricey!

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=30250

Don't want to spend that much really but the need to last and be adjustable.

    Any other recommendations?

    Thanks
