  1. Oh well  Its bin moded up with toxsin forks + new rear brake that was bled by the sink masta so yours will be feeling a bit sad now ratsteiller has lost his voice. Just giv his saddle a bit of mud to catch an he'll be ok.

    It's not THAT dull Adam! I finished mine and went on to do an MSc in Laser Engineering (because it was funded/sponsored) and now I'm working as a software developer. Half the time these days it seems that if you have a degree you get a graduate job, regardless of the degree subject.

    Phil does more practical engineering, which means he probably learns more stuff that is actually useful.

    I think you'll find that very few riders make their living out of riding trials. Hermance has the obvious advantage that his dad runs Koxx. Ashton and Hawyes obviously found a niche and earned respect by doing things different. Yes, they might not get the best results or do the highest 'taps', but they've got far more out of the sport than a lot of people.

    It is a shame that there isn't more money in trials - for example Akrigg is as good at trials as Gerrard is at footie, except that Gerrard gets paid about £80,000 per week more than Akrigg. But then again, we choose the sports we like to participate in. I'm sure most people on this forum are either at school or work during the day. Those who do neither are either rich, fully pro (i.e. their bike sponsors pay them enough to survive on) or they're "my parents let me live rent free so I can ride my bike all day" scrounging layabouts.

    Why do people fill dents? It's rather like painting over rust. The problem is still there, why pretend it isn't. Seems too many people are more worried about how their bike looks than how it rides.

    Paul Thomson used to ride a Crescent and I think he was pleased with it. Yeah, quite short by todays standards (1030ish). Hawzee had one too didn't he.

I always think its funny when you past the carparks full of modded cars on Friday night and they've all got the bonnets lifted up even when all there is is a standard 1l Vauxhall engine with a K&N. Still, I suppose there's no harm in pretending. Reckon they spent too much time watching Fast & Furious and not enough time listening to their physics teacher when he was telling them what torque actually is.

    Right now I'd like a 2l turbo diesel Astra, as I think it would be nice to get around in, a bit sporty but still good on fuel if you don't rag it. Still, reckon that Focus estate is a good sized car, as you say you can get all your kit in no probs. Always nice when I can use my dad's Vectra as you can drop the back seat and stick a bike in without taking the wheels off.

    Just a shame we get arse-raped for insurance these days.

  6. The sand will come off eventually and the brake pads won't last as long. I'm amazed at the number of topics on what brake pads, etc, as I never seem to have this problem. HS33's front and back, both with grinds and red pads. Work fine in the wet and the dry, the only thing being that its worth cleaning the rims if I've been out in the wet.

    They hold on rails, gaps, whatever. I'm sure lots of people either have toy angle grinders or weak brake fingers. I ground a rim for a mate and it works fine when I ride his bike, but he always lands and the brake slips. I think its because when I started riding I had shite cantilever brakes, and it was a case of hold on tight or land on your arse.

    As for powder coating, sounds like a bad idea. I would have thought the paint would wear away (when my tyre rubbed against my old powder coated frame it went down to the metal in seconds) and not be any more grippy than the break surface. But hey, there's nothing wrong with experimentation, so if it's not a hassle you could give it a go.

  7. And of course when you put this 2.0l lump in your car, your getting bigger front discs and a rear disc conversion ye? And a new gearbox? Torsion bars etc to stop the engine ripping the chassis apart? And everything else you will need for that conversion?

    Just sounds stupid to me. A car with a engine coversion is frowned upon by the DVLA and will cost you more on insurance than a actual 2.0l car.

    Yeah, totally agree. Think of all the costs. There is the Corsa in the first place and the wheels and all the plastic and 'ICE'. Then you see them in the back of Max Power (wasn't my copy...) for sale for about 6k. All the mods do is advertise the fact that the car's been ragged and probably driven round and round and round the local town centre in first/second gear only.

    Not trying to spoil your fun (or your thread) but if you want to do things like swap engines about you'd be better off getting something that's easier to work with and is older. I bought an Escort Mk4 van with RS bumpers, RST alloys, XR3i front interior, tinted windows and an engine that had been rebuilt 50k ago with:

    Rebore and new pistons

    Piper race cam

    New valves/springs

    Gas flowed head

    The best bit? The 75 pound price tag. Why? Because the chassis was rotten to bits (it really was falling apart), even though it came with a folder crammed with receipts that all matched up. When I stripped the engine apart it was mint inside, as the car had sat for two years and hardly been run. Currently it's waiting for new valve guides and head skimming and then it's going to go back together with twin 40mm Weber DCNF's (80 quid with manifold s/h).

    Add that lot up and you can build an engine for peanuts. When my mate did a similar rebuild he didn't have access to a workshop so he did all the work in the boot (it was an estate)! Next I want a 3dr Mk4 Escort shell to put it in and some OZ's (16 is more than big enough...) with a stripped interior, new sus etc.

    At the end, the cost will probably not have gone over 3k, and bear in mind it'll have been built from the ground up.

    Still, I reckon there's far more fun to be had from a Mk1...

  10. If you take the frame to some back-street half-arsed welder and get him to just run weld over the crack it'll last about five minutes.

    My frame cracked half way round the downtube/BB join, so I opened the crack up to about 3mm all the way along (drill bit and needle files - easy with an aluminium frame) and then got a well-respected and extremely competent welder to fill the gap and put some weld over the top, and then smooth it all off.

    It's lasted another 10 months now and is fine. I didn't get it heat treated as 1) it's probably not worth the effort and 2) you'd probably mess the frame up totally. If the weld is sound, it'll last a bit longer, but as somebody commented the frame will probably crack elsewhere soon anyway.

    This is called Trials-Forum for a reason, to discuss and speak your opinions.

    And all I said was my opinion. I was merely pointing out that perhaps Jonny should consider his own videos before calling others boring. Most threads in this so-called Trials-Forum deviate slightly at some point.

    BTW, Jonny, I thought the last couple of videos you posted were boring as all you seemed to do was ride along flat straight walls. Not a complaint though, as all this 'media' is free to download. We can take it or leave it.
