  1. Hmmm about £1200-£1300 for my Leeson 24", quite a substantial amount considering it was my first trials bike and I had never taken trials seriously before (how can you on a DH bike, lol!) But I think its worth it (Y) Trials is a fair bit cheaper than Downhilling, you dont have to drive miles to ride properly, and a decent bike doesnt cost getting on for £3k!

  2. Hey, cool :-)

I just said argos half heartedly, thinking about convenience, I will take a peek now! Although they charge for delivery I think, so Im still open to any other suggestions :)

If you are as tight as a ducks arse, or want to do it now. you can use a really gnarly file and it works...okish. Not as good as a grind, but definitly better than nothing (Y)

 " tight as a ducks..."

I dont think I have a file with me (at uni) but I recon I could find something to roughen up the surface lying around!

None of my local argos's seem to have that cheap one in stock, and its not available for home delivery apparently...

EDIT: weird.... both posts I made appeared in the same post!

  3. Hello guys :-) Its been a while since I have posted!

My rear brake is a HS33 2005, heatsink pads (the red £6 ones for smooth rims), Leeson booster and on SunRhyno Xl 24 rim (Smooth). Its been working reasonably, on and off for a few months, but now its in an off phase! It has no holding power and doesnt come on suddenly at all. The pads are nicely aligned with the rim, I have sanded them (and the rims!). I dont think they need a bleed as they dont feel "squishy". I gave the front and rear brake the same treatment, and the front is working great!

Im fed up with the situation so I think I am going to do a grind unless there are any other suggestions?

My mum bought me some heatsink blues for christmas which should be good on a light grind?

Does anyone happen to have a link to somewhere I can buy a grinder like argos etc that is suitable for grinding, and nice and cheap! :$

Thanks very much for any advice!

  4. Hi :)

I recommend Square Taper myself, for the reasons pointed out above - the bottom bracket bearings tend to last much longer. A good square taper crank like a middlesburn pro trials, put on correctly should last a very long time, and so should the BB (Y)

    edit: changed smiley!

  5. get the geo of you old leeson, it was awesome. or get a 1080 wb one :P

If I remember correctly, 1040 is the max that Mr Leeson CAN make as thats how long the tubes he buys are?

I was wondering if you would order another Leeson Tomm, I think I would if mine were to be stolen  I wonder what the waiting time is like these days - it seems that Leeson bikes are becoming more and more popular?

  6. Wow, lots of hype for this, it best had be good if it does take the 14 hours it claims it will take :P

    5.7 KB/sec....

Looking forward to seeing it, espacially the 24 inch section!

  7. Hi, when I was selling my Santa Cruz Bullit at first I couldnt find a courier who would send such a large item (I got a Cannondale box from a local bike shop to put it in) for less than £70. Eventually I sent it with Initial City Link who didnt have a problem with the size, (green and yellow vans) for a reasonable price. city link

    Good luck!

  8. Hi :)

I have just learnt to wheelswap myself, and I find that the process/manouever of throwing the bike up and forwards causes me to land with my weight shifted right back, hence allowing me to (relatively) easily keep the front wheel in the air once on the object.

I have only recently started trying to get up decent objects and It still makes me cringe everytime I slip to the bashguard :$ - I know thats what the bashguard is there for, but does it damage the bike/BB for example?

Good luck with your wheelswaps (Y)

  9. 24"

So I would definitely be tempted, for an all-out street frame, to have

    1020

    380

    +25mm

    73*

Tee hee, that sounds familiar! Thats almost exactly the same as my Leeson, except I think my BB is +20!

Its still the only trials bike I have tried (I would like to try a long low bike) but I like it! I think I may prefer a slightly higher BB and a touch longer perhaps, but I do really like it the way it is :)

  10. this may not be too helpful to what you want to use it for, but if i am ever trying to gap with the brakes locked, then I always turn the bike 90degrees and hop like a side hop with no kink, dunno why but i find it easier, although i have never used it while riding, just pissing about

    Hiya,

I see what your saying - thats a good idea :- Although I still want to hop forwards without pedaling! I went out for a bit tonight until the rain made sure my back brake wasnt working anymore (Y)

    ~Gazz

Thanks for the other replies too (-:

Thanks Tom Booth if it was aimed at me, lol! I have only been riding less than once a week for < an hour so I havent really made much progress since uni started again. I have started riding in the evenings now and hope to improve significantly! Its a pain riding in the wet and dark though (and by myself, I need some riding mates in York!!

    ~Gaz

  11. Hiya (-:

    Thanks for the replies!

What you both said makes sense! The wheelbase of my Leeson is 1020mm so I guess I would have the front end a bit lower doing things compared to the people I see on vids with their 1080 etc bike and longish stems.

I am determined to get the hang of hopping forwards without pedalling, and its good to know that even a few feet is hard as I can only manage inches at the moment!

Thanks for the advice! I am also going to try the hopping from the edge thing you mentioned Tomm and see if I get a bounce out of it!

    Cheers,

    ~Gaz

  12. Hi guys (-:

I went out on my bike tonight and was trying to practise hopping forwards on the backwheel without a pedal kick, but found it rediculously hard!!!

I can gap 5.5 feet on a good day with a pedal kick see Video. I notice when watching it, two things:

1: That my pedal kick is quite a large movement compared to people in other videos I have seen - gear ratio too low or too much emphasis on the pedal kick as opposed to the hop?

2: My bike never really goes very steep. I was watching a video by Felix (the super smooth guy on the pink bike) and he goes really steep whilst gapping and balancing on the back wheel. Is it my technique that is wrong, or just the design of my bike means thats where the balancing point is.. Maybe my bars should be lower?

So, I would be interested if people could post there largest static gaps with pedal kick, and approx. how far they can go without the kick, and would also would really appreciate feedback on my technique as it doesnt look anywhere near as good as the people I see on the videos!!

Is hopping forwards without the pedal kick tricky to master?

    Thanks very much,

    ~Gareth

  13. Hi :)

I think that the best bike I have ridden is my bike, and thats because its the bike I am most comfortable on. Apart from mine I would say Kris Leesons 24inch is the best as it has almost the same geometry and setup as mine, but its lighter :P

I have yet to try a long low trials bike though so I dont know, maybe I would prefer that?!

    ~Gaz

  14. ashton geo is

    380mm stays

    +20 bb rise

    73 degree headangle

    1030 wheelbase

my leeson is exactly the same except i went for a a 74 degree head angle and +25mm bb rise, it rides super nice.

    have fun

    mike

Thats very similar to my Leeson, mine is 1020 wheelbase and 74 head angle though - and it rocks!!!!

    ~Gaz

  15. Congratz, thats not a bad height at all in my opinion! :P

So far I have only managed to clear about 6 inches, lol, but I havent practised sidehops yet. I can bunnyhop/backwheel up walls a good 2.5 foot high though, so I just need to transfer some of that technique to going sideways I think!

    Keep practising!

    ~Gaz

ps: I liked your failed attempt at the end, hehe :P

  16. Cool video :P

You make natural riding look pretty easy! I tried riding natural for the first time the other day and I really struggled! I wasnt half as good as I am at street (and Im not good at street anyway :) )

    Impressive :P

  17. Im pretty skinny now, but I used to be like this >---|@ (very skinny). So last year I started going to the gym 3 times a week, eating lots of decent, high protein foods etc and I have put on some muscle :P I also took whey powder after a workout, which is kinda like powdered milk except its 80% protein - I think it helped :P

I will start going to the gym again when i go back to uni.

    ~Gaz

  18. Try stretching before you ride it's alot better and would help stop you pulling your muscles

    Cheers Kyle.

    Hi :P

Thanks for the tip - since I pulled my back I have been doing 5-10 mins of stretches before every ride, but unfortunately my shoulder still aches. It started aching after a harsh landing when sidehopping off a wall, so I think I jarred/pulled it or something...

Ill take a week off and hopefully it will be okay :P

    ~Gaz

  19. Hi - sorry to hear of your misfortune!

I have had my trials bike for over 6 weeks now, but have spent about 3 weeks, on and off recovering from various aches and pains!!

I had to take a week off when I pulled a muscle in my back (unbearable to so much as backhop) and now my bike is sitting in the shed because I have a sore shoulder, so Im giving it a week to (hopefully) recover rather than just jumping back on the bike after 2 days like I have been doing. Maybe it will heal this time!

Fingers crossed we heal soon :)
